Paul MaudDib posted:This is true, but film demand has largely hit its floor for the same reasons. It will decline over time but it's not going to be crashing like during the switch to digital. An absurd amount of the film market is now cinematographers who think nothing of blowing through a couple hundred meters of film or disposable cameras (which are still the go-to in many parts of the world). Neither of those markets will switch immediately, cinematographers who still shoot film are doing it for the dynamic range or uprezzing capabilities and it's not possible to make a $5 digital camera that doesn't suck. I would imagine the cinematographers who are pioneering film are all mostly of the older generation and will be retiring and/or dying off as time goes by. Students might shoot with film. I see the students from the NY Film Academy using old film cameras for their cinematography in the parks, but I believe the younger generation will scrap it once they get their hands on modern equipment if and when the opportunity presents itself. Then again, you never know. I hope they don't.

Wouldn't it be great/has there ever been a game where you are a photojournalist or paparazzi and each level is a different area and you are tasked with finding something interesting to shoot? Like a war zone, or the African plains, or a stakeout at a celebrities house. Your photos would then be sold based on composition and whether you caught certain scripted events, which you then use to buy better gear. You could make things random so every time you play it's different. One night could be just a politician preparing for the next days meetings or it could be him dumping the body of his overdosed mistress in the river. Make it like GTA with cameras.

I was into photography long before I first played it, but I'll admit to having a lot of fun with Pokemon Snap (and I was never even really a fan of Pokemon). But the one thing that I couldn't stand and just irked me was how they took points off for not having your subjects perfectly centered. Ever hear of the rule of thirds, Prof. Oak?!?

I don't know how the Dorkroom will feel about this but my city has recently been plastered with these ads for the Canon EOS M and it's making me kind of mad. As somebody with a passion for photography and an interest in the art and science of taking good photos seeing ads for a micro four thirds camera that costs as much as a DSLR (AUD900 for just the body) that advocate buying a high-end camera and then leaving it on full-auto because apparently wanting to have control over your camera makes you some kind of nerd is super aggravating. The ads in question: And I'm not even going to go into how nauseating the word 'playfessional' is

Is there still an urbex thread round here somewhere? Can't find it. I went to GREAT EXPENSE in making this rig for my camera and was thinking of ustreaming an explore I was planning to do tomorrow if there was any interest in it. (Actually a serious post, I am going exploring tomorrow and will stream it if anyone wants to see run down crap).

cyberia posted:...because apparently wanting to have control over your camera makes you some kind of nerd is super aggravating. I dunno, the generation that grew up probably never owning a film camera is starting families now, and we all know how important it is to have the best facebook pictures. The mothers that I know don't have room or time for a full-body DSLR, and haven't bought a new P&S in years because their iPhone is good enough, but they do want something better. The idea of "don't worry about exposure levels, the camera will figure it out" isn't something that appeals to you or me, but there is a market there for a high-level family camera. Hell, I'm thinking of picking one up for myself next time I go on vacation and sticking a 28mm f/1.8 on the front.

I'm pretty sure most DSLR owners never read the manual. Also, I have shot many concerts with a 40D in one hand and a beer in the other. THAT is a playfessional. It's also a compelling argument for autofocus versus manual focus.

It's a product that's not for you and it's not marketed for you. Don't let that upset you. Obviously when they're going to sell the product they're going to emphasise the best features to appeal to who they want to sell it to. People have different perceptions of cameras. I had a friend who saw my first camera (400D) as some impossibly expensive extravagance but there are people shooting Phase and Hasselblad who probably wouldn't consider most DSLRs high end. If you stop caring about how other people use their stuff you'll probably end up much happier
