Yup, a friend of mine had it happen to his SVO a few years back. Hit peak boost in second and stretched every single head bolt, dumping oil and coolant all over the road. He upgraded to ARP studs after that.

The Navy and Marine Corps use probe and drogue, while the Air Force uses the boom. I don't know why the discrepancy, myself. Seems like the boom system has fewer moving parts on the receiving plane, which would be better for maintenance. Could be the boom system weighs more, or needs a larger aircraft, neither of which might be able to take off and land on a carrier deck.

Ridge_Runner_5 posted:The Navy and Marine Corps use probe and drogue, while the Air Force uses the boom. Straight off of wikipedia: "The two main refueling systems are probe-and-drogue, which is simpler to adapt to existing aircraft, and the flying boom, which offers faster fuel transfer, but requires a dedicated operator station."

CatCannons posted:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iZr2umGKQXg Not exactly. When it was built in the 1930s, it was the primary generator for the entire Copenhagen area and most of Zealand, and it was the most powerful diesel engine in the world until the mid-60s. It was mothballed for decades but still hooked up to the grid. This saved a lot of asses when we had a couple of major power outages, one in the 90s and one in the early 00s. The big old diesel engine fires up using compressed air and could be started with no power on the grid. Both times, they managed to fire it up on dry bearings after not having run for years. Which is kinda tricky when the crankshaft weighs over 100 tons. A couple of years ago, MAN Diesel disconnected the engine from the grid and converted the engine hall to a diesel museum. They still fire up the old engine two times a month and hold classes for diesel engineers right next to the engine. It's located less than a km from my workplace, so I've been there a couple of times. It's an amazing machine to experience in person.

RE: Energy Return Wheelrcman50166 posted:I commented a while ago about how the tire still has a regular tread so it needs to be replaced just as often as a regular tire and that lateral forces would just destroy those thread rods by placing them in bending. The response I got was just anger and misplaced blame on the tire industry. If he angled some of the bolts away from each other and pretensioned them, they could take lateral loads. DefaultPeanut posted:Driving on anything other than a perfectly manicured highway will spell the end for those steel rings. In a conventional tire, the air and sidewall can stand a bit of deformation when hitting an object at speed; raised manhole cover, square edged pothole, debris. This seems like it would transfer right through the solid rubber tread and mangle the rings / snap the 'spokes'. I don't think you understand how it works. The bolts only prevent the inner rim from moving away from the outer rim. The inner and outer rim are free to move together closer. This means that the hub of the vehicle is connected to ground in a circuit like this: Wheel Hub > Bolt Members along upper arc of Wheel > The outer spring steel wheel > Rubber backing > Rubber tire > Ground He is using the outer spring steel wheel as a giant circular spring, where loads are applied on the top and bottom of the circle. The bolts are only in tension, and only on the top arc of the wheel. He is only using off the shelf threaded bolts for his prototype.
