Wow. I hadn't noticed it, but mine does it too. Doesn't seem to affect speeds, though. Good catch.

I was holding out for the Surface, but after the lackluster reviews, I'm likely going to instead wait for the Oct 29th Google announcement, and see if they put out a 4G Nexus, or that 10.1 Samsung Nexus Tablet.

I really just want an Android tablet with a cover like the Smart Cover. That's all i want.

Just played with a wifi analyzer a little bit, there's a 20 db drop in signal strength when you cover the back, upper right quadrant of the nexus. No noticeable changes because of orientation, so it probably has something to do with the heel of your hand covering that part.

I just wish someone would do a tablet with a decent wifi radio/antenna. Even if it meant a plastic/slightly thicker casing I think it's be well worthwhile given that its required pretty much the whole time the tablet is in use.

Isn't the galaxy tab thing thin plastic on the back?

Also, you're holding it wrong ;)

Yes its plastic (as are quite a few of the other Android models) but the wifi reception is still garbage.

It's not even a matter of holding it wrong, its just bad reception under any conditions.

No matter what you do to an antenna, there's going to be attenuation from your hands. That's just physics. People have already noted that it doesn't seem to change the wireless throughput.

Also no SD card it seems. Expected from Nexus devices, but I have no doubt it will cause a few anguished comments.

From the iFixit teardown:

Yellow is the Wifi antenna. I wouldn't have thought holding it from the top right edge would be that comfortable anyway.

Haha, no it isn't comfortable. Doesn't seem to affect performance either, as others have said. I think the nexus 7 has better wifi than my old kindle fire at least.

I was just pointing out that it's more to do with where your hands are than what direction it's facing.

I could be remembering wrong but the equivalent diagram on the Nexus 7 quick start guide labels an "NFC area".

Thinking about it, context switching from phone to tablet by lazily tapping the phone to the front bezel would actually be an OK use case.

It seems like the PS3 controller is now recognized by the TF700.

I think I saw where it was on the TF300 and a few other models, but the 700 was left out until I guess the latest update it had.

It took me a few minutes yesterday to figure out why it was connected to play Dead Trigger, but not recognized by SixAxis.

I mean, my wife and I use the NFC functions on tablets/phones to quick-update shopping lists in Evernote when either of us is home and the other is out. It's probably not the best for mobile stuff, but fine for home stuff.

Oops what I meant was - it looks extremely cheap and thus a bit fake. If it's real I guess it can take the crown of being the cheapest electronics manual I've ever seen (not saying it matters at all though).

You don't need internet access to use Wallet. You can use it just fine with no 3G or 4G but in order to change cards, you'll need internet.

Sorry if this question has been beaten to death, but is there a general consensus regarding if either the Fire HD or the Nexus 7 being the better buy? I can deal with not having expandable memory and the Nexus 7 32GB is enticing, but I want to make sure I'm getting the best tech between the two. Also the ability to install custom kernels is important, which also leans me towards the Nexus 7.

Staples does have it but they apparently received a C&D from Google and ASUS from them selling them a week early.

At this point, it depends on the managers on duty and if they're cool with selling you one.

Office Depot has them online only right now, if you try to order, it may work. Just don't do the in-store pickup and have it shipped to your house. Some people have stated that it doesn't work for in-store pick-up yet.

I will be gone, but not forever.
Trip report from my first business trip with my N7. I bought it primarily to keep me entertained on long flights and in the airports as well as times I'm eating out that I'm waiting for my meal. I ended up using it even more than I imagined and my laptop often spent any non-work hours in my bag. I was very curious about battery life, but on the way home I watched a 2+ hour movie and only drained it to 85% which means cross-country flights should be completely doable. I'm really happy I purchased it and continue to be puzzled when people (Apple, Tech Blogs) refer to it as a "compromise device."
