The enemy has become a flaming star!

i remember once doing a (real) football coaching course where you'd play quick games and if you had an extra person or a really good player they'd play as a "flow player" for whichever team had the ball.

to summarise i think they might mean people who can flow between roles as and where they're needed, because specialisations aren't important

Ask HN: What Can I Do With My Parallella Personal Supercomputer?

I've outlined a couple of things I have done with it so far:

  • Installed Ubuntu
  • Removed Ubuntu
  • Installed Arch
  • Removed Arch
  • Installed Ubuntu
  • Removed Ubuntu
  • Installed Ubuntu
  • Avoided reflection about meaning to my life
  • Researched the Parallella's introductory resources
  • Computed 1000 first primes
  • Computed 1000 first primes with multicore algorithm (speedup of 0.0006 seconds - I love it)
  • Started work on parallel computation of digits of pi
  • Further research of the Parallella's introductory resources
  • Put "digits of pi" project on hold
  • Set up XBMC
  • Installed Quake 3
  • Pondered the impermanence of human civilization
  • Removed Ubuntu
  • Installed Ubuntu
  • Started research on writing a parallel raytracer
  • Found Wikipedia article on "Raytracing"
  • Did not find Simple Wikipedia equivalent: submitted to Requested Articles
  • Put "parallel raytracer" project on backburner
  • I have no imagination and I must buy electronic poo poo
  • Installed MAME

I would like feedback as well as input on further ideas for what I can do with my Parallella.

right someone make sure i'm not missing anything here: they want $200 for a 64-core board capable of ~90GFLOPS? because i can see a GTX 560 Ti on newegg for $190 which has ~400 cores and can hit 1TFLOP

e: also what the gently caress since when can you take the clock rate of each core and multiply by the number of cores

in what universe does that make sense

e2: wait are they claiming 5W per core or 5W per board

I already did, but thanks for the suggestion! I'm actually in the process of writing up a series of thoughts on installing Ubuntu on the Parallella - I'm afraid the disk I/O makes it a bit slower than I'd hoped, but in time I'm sure they can utilize the cores to improve the performance on this stage as well.

Are you a manchild who didn't like Skyward Sword?

This kickstarter is for you!

Second Quest is a stand-alone graphic novella inspired by Zelda. It's an original story about a young woman from a small town in the sky who begins to suspect that the legends about her home aren't true. If you like mysterious landscapes, non-princesses, videogame criticism, or general gorgeousity, then please consider backing Second Quest!

SAVING ZELDA

David and I are both huge Zelda fans. We love the adventure, the challenge, the constant sense of discovery. We especially love exploring worlds full of secrets.

Last spring, after my essay “Saving Zelda” was published, we started talking about all our frustrations with the latest in the series, Skyward Sword. With all the handholding, there was little to discover on our own. We didn’t have to pay attention – the adventure just kind of happened. We couldn’t really get lost in Hyrule, even if we wanted to.

As we talked, an original story of our own emerged, one that took these Zelda problems (common to many other modern games as well!) and explored them in comic form. The idea was for a short comic at first, but it quickly grew much bigger over the summer as we developed the story, characters, and world. By the end, we found ourselves with the script and concept art for a complete graphic novella.

Second Quest is a comic for those who love videogames but want more compelling worlds and a sense of real discovery. Zelda fans will enjoy familiar motifs turned upside-down, but you don’t have to know Zelda to enjoy our story. It’s for anyone who’s felt the pull of distant landscapes and longed to explore a world full of mystery.

The cores are independent arranged in a grid. Very different architecture from gpus, more flexible. Comparing peak throughput doesn't help much unless your workload is 3d graphics basically
