Are you sure that gap is right? Looks huge to me, and my Monster's basically the same engine(assuming that's a 900ss). Also, valves aren't too scary to check, but it'll be a hell of a time if I ever end up replacing shims. At least there's only 8 of them, I can't imagine labor costs if you had to do valves on a desmosedici.

I wasn't sure if it was sparking so I bent them out a bit in case I was just missing it. Knowing that they weren't replaced since he got the bike with 10k on it I think it's possible they just degraded over time. He told me he lost power gradually, so it sounds like they started fouling and just got worse until the spark died.

Finding a drat 675 for about $5k within a days riding distance is becoming a pain in the rear end. Shiiit. Expanding the search to include the 06+ R6. Phoenix, Tucson, Flagstaff, Albuquerque, Vegas, Bay Area, LA, San Diego, Denver, etc. I literally just sent emails on 9 bikes. Time to see what happens. Sunday is the day I need to take care of this poo poo, for real. BlackMK4 fucked around with this message at 10:06 on Oct 26, 2012 |

You can buy my 06 R6! (It only requires a trip deep into the heart of texas) You really shouldn't need to travel out of CA. There are bikes to be found. Especially 06-07 R6's as they are probably about the most popular track bike out there right now.

A question I came across in my old physics text:Someone who's never worked on anything posted:You are installing a new spark plug in your car, and the manual specifies that it’s tightened to a torque that has a magnitude of 45 N-m. If the wrench is 0.28 m in length, and the pulling force you apply makes an angle of 130 degrees with the wrench, what is the magnitude of the force that must be applied to the wrench? I was hoping the next question was going to be that it only required 45 in/lbs and to calculate how much extra torque you applied while stripping the threads.

Hey dudes and lady dudes. I have a small request for those of you in and around SoCal. Back on July 22nd at 9:15 am, a good friend of mine was involved in a brutal collision in Highland Park, a neighborhood of LA. He was pretty messed up, and is still recovering. Now that he is finally back at home to continue his recovery, his wife has started a search for a witness that stopped to help at the scene but left before the police got there. They are just asking that he talk with their insurance, and they really want to thank him. My friend suffered severe memory loss (which is constantly improving - the first few times he was actually able to communicate, after about 3 weeks in the hospital, he though he was at work at a university he hasn't been to in ~10 years), and I don't think he has any recollection of the event still. He was riding a CB350 with some Murakami stickers on it. Her description of the witness she's been passing around: Hispanic male mid 20's on sport bike (maybe a ninja) in leathers at red light on Estara at Fletcher Drive in Highland Park Sunday morning at 9:15 am. on July 22, 2012 rushed to the aid of biker hit by SUV whose family desperately needs him to talk with their insurance company. Call Anne at 626-376-8961 If anyone knows of someone that could be this person (or hey, you are this person!) send me a PM or I think you can email me with the link in my profile. Also, please if you have a moment re-post that description on any other local moto forums you frequent. E; Checked with his wife, she's fine with her phone number traveling with the description. Thanks! VV Good idea, thanks. sirbeefalot fucked around with this message at 19:58 on Oct 26, 2012 |

I'm not really worried about midrange, it's more how the bike feels under me - R6 and 675 feel the best. It seems like the 675 has a really soft top end which would eventually annoy me but... hey... whatever. http://bayarearidersforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=415963 There is always the option of going way under budget and having some fun. BlackMK4 posted:Details? This is pretty much what I am looking at right now - I intend to buy Sunday. You can definitely find a local r6. No need to travel this far really... From my experience r6s are pretty freaky. They make a lot of noise. If he hasn't done the cct they're loud as gently caress on startup and even then they all have a tick from the drive train that is... disconcerting at best sometimes. The bike feels good but it really is gutless until about 6k, especially with a full system and the exhaust valve gone. Mines an 06 with 17k on it, 05 headers, Chinese levers, double bubble, pc3, bmc filter, smog block offs, undertail, etc. Most of the common parts really. Like I said you can definitely find one close by, they're far too popular.

Got the Ducati running, but it's running like poo poo. No Idle without choke, so I think the carbs are gummed up. It has almost no power, it lugs in first and couldn't lift the front if your life depended on it. Plugs are gapped at .036 and both cylinders are firing. When I first cranked it, it was spitting smoke out the carbs occasionally, but it stopped doing it after I let it idle a bit. I think the valve seats need to be cleaned/ground. I'm pretty much done with it, he's found a Ducati authorized tech to work on it and he can at least ride it there now. Once it's up and running again he's told me he'll bring it back over and let me ride it, so I'm looking forward to that. I did ride it some, but it has less power than my DRZ does right now. I'll be honest, I'm sad to see it leave the garage. It's a gorgeous bike, but if I ever buy a Ducati it will be a newer model. Looking pretty standing still is nice, but I buy bikes to ride the piss out of them and I don't think this one would be a good rider for every day use.

the 2-valve air-cooled ducs with the newer rockers(early 90's ones flaked chrome off or something) are pretty solid. I've had issues with the electrics, but haven't had an issue in years and took it on a 900-mile trip two summers ago with no problems. Dunno what the deal is with that SS.

Ducs in general seem very hit or miss. I've got a '98 semi-watercooled one with highish miles that has been very reliable, and we've got one with nearly identical engine and electronics in our shop that's been a nightmare of issues for the owner. Nasty sounding rattle in the bottom end, choke that doesn't stay where you put it, damaged wires in the harness, sidestand that always looks like it's about to snap off. But if you work on them, you can see why issues crop up. They're underbuilt. The fairings all have about half as many mounting points as you'd see on a Japanese bike or a BMW, often on weak thin brackets. Mine uses the coolant overflow tank as a structural member in a couple places. The rectifier (a component whose job is to shed electrical energy by shunting it to ground, generating heat as a byproduct) has no fins on it and is mounted in a place with no airflow.

I was pulled over for the first time today! Motorcycle cop was on the side of the rode and waved me down after clocking me at 70. I'm pretty sure he was more interested in warning me about riding in the rain than how fast as I was going as after he explained why it's better to go 60 in the rain he let me go (after checking my license of course) without even a warning. I think being in full gear probably helped my case.

So, I have a lot of rusty, pitted chrome on the RD. Most of it is gonna be replaced eventually, but in the meantime I'd at least like the chrome to not look rusty as poo poo. I mentioned this to a buddy of mine who is a Harley guy, and he comes out with this gem: "Get some aluminum foil, wet it, and rub. Comes right off." Holy. poo poo. It works like gangbusters.
