This is the second year in a row the Nexus event has been postponed due to current events, when you remember the Samsung open box thing being delayed for Jobs's funeral. I don't begrudge them the decision, I just wish we could stop withholding news or data until we can assemble a group of people in a room and have a guy on stage in front of them smiling and holding the unit and proudly saying "This is the Nexus [foo]" while camera bulbs flash and stock prices fluctuate. This is some of the techiest, nerdiest stuff. Just loving stream an announcement video, it's how the target audience prefers to see it anyway.

Install Gentoo posted:No, the actual target audience of these events is the media; not the customers. All they do is run a 10 second clip showing a B-roll commercial anyway. You can still ship free equipment to the media without having a catered shindig where the CEO talks and the engineer talks about specs and then the guy from Marketing shows up and says "we don't build hardware, we build platforms." It just seems like an old-rear end idea that's ripe for some out of the box disruption. Especially since not every blog wants to send a guy to NYC anyway.

Usual Nexus complaints; probably wireless only, no SD card, something something. The real news is that Samsung is making 10" 2560 x 1600 screens and fitting them to a device that will apparently officially exist.

I've been very happy with my Transformer Prime which I bought this January but I just noticed that the camera no longer works. I'm not sure if it was due to the upgrade to Jelly Bean or if it just up and failed. Has anyone heard of this problem as a known issue? I suspect it's not as I dug around the internet looking for anyone else with a similar issue and came up empty handed.

Also, holy lol at the iPad mini prices for anything that's not a 16gb wifi model.

I liked my iPad a whole lot more than my Xoom, and I was excited when I heard the iPad mini rumors...but paying $430 vs $250 for a device that I primarily read/browse on just isn't worth it. There are a couple games I will probably miss, but that's about it.

Hey guys, a quick question: I'm looking to maybe get a tablet, and I really want to be able to code on the thing. Do android tablets support doing various languages (perhaps in a VM etc) or is it java only via AIDE or whatever it's called?

If you want a "swiss army tablet" which can handle both laptop and a tablet scenarios as the situation calls for it, look to getting a Windows 8 device (specifically Windows 8, not RT as you need X86/X64 compatibility) since that use case is what the entire OS is based around.

You'd be so much happier with an Ultrabook or other thin, light notebook, and something like a Nexus 7 for reading or gaming.

You can use the Scripting Layer for Android to do some neat stuff. Clojure REPL looks like it coule be fun to play with, but I haven't seen it used for anything really interesting or particularly neat. Everyone's favorite editor (Vim) is available on Android as well.

C/ C++ coding at a minimum, and I'd like to be able to test, say, nodejs scripts and/ or run some linux vm. I'm actually looking at something akin to a Windows 8 tablet now that I know I can run something like virtualbox, so sorry for taking up your time.

This stuff seems like it would be possible on Android but definitely a pain in the rear end. When the x86 Windows 8 tablets come out they'll handle this easily - probably a smart move.

Not everyone has the same flexibility in the market that the USA seems to afford. The big thing holding me back from buying a decent Android tablet is that none of them have 3G. Hopefully this will be less of an issue once we get past the Tegra 3 era.

I can't remember the last time I bought electronics from a brick and mortar store. Does anyone have recommendations between Fry's/Office Depot/Best Buy/Staples etc, as far as which is easiest to deal with returns or warranty claims? Gonna pick up a 32gb nexus 7 this week and if the screen lift issue or something comes up I'd like to not have to fight with a retailer about it.

What case would you guys recommend for the Nexus 7? Im not really a fan of full rubber covers like phones have. Easy access to port/buttons is more important to me, I've never liked cases that cover buttons with huge rubber bits.

Just ordered the Nexus 7 32GB. I hated the Galaxy Tab 2, but that was mostly because of TouchWiz and the 30 pin connector. I would like to know what a good case is though. I'm not a big fan of those clunky leather ones either though, is there anything along the lines of the HP Touchpad case where it just kind of fits in and nothing blocks the face of the device?

With the unit we tried, that panel was a little finicky to remove, though. Also, though the cover automatically woke and slept the device, it's not segmented like the smart cover on an iPad, so it's not likely to be especially useful as a stand.

I saw that, it's easily my favorite part of the tablet. I love the smart cover, and the surface type cover. Finally having an android alternative is fantastic. I just want to know if it has a magnet to keep it closed or open. (which the Type Cover does not have).

Well I'm probably going to be selling my iPad to get a Nexus 10. I already own an Android phone (gotta have my gigantic screens) and I prefer the Android experience over iOS anyway, Android just didn't have a device that really felt as solid as an iPad. With the Nexus 7, that changed, but I prefer a larger screen. Just have to find a good keyboard-case solution for the Nexus 10 and I'll be golden.
