Ok, thanks y'all. I'll let ya know if I manage to get to SJC for a skate, sevorak, thanks!

PS - A while back, I told y'all about how I went down to 3/8 on the sharpening. It may be placebo, but I really feel like it makes a difference.

Pre-game: whatever, just try to eat more than an hour before game time. Sometimes I'll have some coffee or one of those Gatorade+ thingys if it's a late game.

During: water, usually drink 16 oz or so over the course of a game.

After: chug some strong mixed-myself Gatorade as soon as I get back to the locker room and more water. Beer and maybe ice cream when I get home.

This recovery technique will be tested this weekend because I have a late Saturday game and then a training 12-mile run on Sunday morning.

How much do you weigh? I skate on 7/16" at 175lb and I personally don't know anyone who uses under 1/2" for some reason. I like the extra bite.

Don't worry, Tyler Myers is holding it for you...
Pre-Game I normally eat normally, but I try not to eat starting about 2 hours before game time.

Ante-Game is 1 scoop gatorade powder + quarter scoop vanilla whey protein + 32 oz. of water. Usually get about 20-25 oz. in.

Post-game, I finish whatever ante-game drink I have left. Usually have a beer. Then I drive home and mix 24oz 1% milk with one scoop chocolate whey protein. Usually try to time the protein to be about 2 hours after the game finishes.

I dunno if it works, but it kinda feels like it.

Man, just got back from a disappointing game. Two goals and an assist for me in a 5-3 loss. Goalie let in a few softy dump-ins. One wasn't going in, he slid out to try and stop it for us but didn't get his pad down in time. It bounced off the pad through his five hole and into the net. :3

The thing that disappointed me most was not so much the loss, but the fact that we lost to a team that had 7 skaters. Even though they had more skill than us and a sand-bagger, we could have won that game easily, but the shifts were too long and there was just too much coasting.

Case in point, 2nd period when we're on the long change. Me and my partner turn back for a change while the puck is carried through the neutral zone. The D-men coming on for us take a leisurely skate into the offensive zone. Like, REALLY relaxed. As in, the forwards spent 20-25 seconds in the zone without any support at the points. And that pair had been spending the whole game taking 4 minute shifts.

I don't hate losing. I hate losing winnable games for dumb reasons. GAH.

I weigh ~210. I like the extra bite because I feel like it gives me more control. It could also be that I'm still new enough that it helps....

I'm about 230lbs and use a 3/8's.

Energy drink was a big success for me on Friday, I think that's going to be a regular thing now for myself.

My pregame-routine:

1) Eat heavy breakfast before work. Usually I just eat light stuff like a bowl of cereal or a bagel but on game day I eat sausage, biscuits, cinnamon rolls, bananas, eggs.

2) All day long I'm drinking water and G2, usually a couple of 20oz water bottles and 20oz gatorade bottles.

3) Lunchtime I'll eat a couple of chicken sandwiches from a fast food joint, usually a Wendys. I get off work around 4:30, head home.

4) I run through my equipment checklist, make sure I've got all of the clean laundry in the bag, all of my gear and water bottles, extra stick, etc.

5) :2bong: and NHL13 for an hour or so.

6) Get picked up and ride to the rink, usually it's about a 2 hour ride up so we carpool.

7) Stop on the way and get a Muscle Milk and a Full Throttle from the gas station, the Muscle Milk goes down the hatch right away. The Full Throttle cracks open when we pull into the rink.

8) Check in, shoot the poo poo with my teammates. At this point there's usually about 45 minutes till they start cutting the ice for our game. About 20 minutes till then I'll hit the dressing room and get changed.

9) Pre-game dump. I'm one of those guys that doesn't poo poo in public restrooms, but the exception is the rink. I always have to squat, since there's always piss on the seat, so I guess that makes it a leg warmup.

10) We are given 3 minutes of ice before the puck drops to warm up, so I'll do my arm and back stretches while the Zamboni is running. When we are cleared to go on the ice I take a few laps around, then go up to the blue line to do my leg/groin stretches. Take a few shots at our goalie to get them warmed up.

11) Once the 3 minutes is up, we head back to the bench and find out which line is starting, then get situated on the bench accordingly.

Hockey players are loving weird, I am no exception.

I play (played?) field hockey to national level for a number of years and was given a lot of nutrition and hydration support over the years. I'm not going to go into a massive amount of detail (its beer league, you can McDonalds if you like) but here are a few rules of thumb.

Hydration, Hydration, Hydration! Hydration is probably the most important, yet the most overlooked thing in terms of preparing to play. On average, the body will use up around 1.5 litres of fluid an hour during exercise - arguably more for ice hockey due to the intensity level. Once the body becomes even slightly dehydrated athletic performance can drop by as much as 20% - for that reason alone its important to get as much fluid on board as possible before, during and after you play. If you want to get all :science: about hydration, you can find out more information as well as (if you really want) how to work out how much fluid you burn through during a game here: http://www.englandhockey.co.uk/page.asp?section=262&sectionTitle=Fluid+Guidelines

Pre-game meals. On average you burn 60g of carbs for every hour of exercise you do. Again, intensity and conditions are a factor so you could argue that hockey is more demanding. Having a meal with lots of starchy carbs (whole wheat pasta, baked potato, wholemeal bread, brown rice etc) with a small amount of protein is recommended and should be eaten 3-4 hours beforehand to allow your body to metabolise it. You can also supplement your carbs intake with isotonic drinks like Powerade, Gatorade etc which contain between 30-60g of carbs which can be metabolised in around an hour. Fruit juice is also rich in carbs.

Pre-game snacks. Anything after 3 hours and up to 30 minutes before you're on the ice and you should be looking at either fruit and/or isotonic drinks which are metabolised quickly by the body. Bananas are great (yellower the better), grapes are full of sugar and good as a quick pick me up.

During the game - As detailed above, keeping hydrated and keeping energy levels high are key. Frequent sips of water and occasional sips of an isotonic drink will keep you going nicely.

Post game snacks - Immediately after you finish playing its advisable to get something high in carbs (Hello beer!) in your system as quickly as possible to help replenish your glucose stocks as well as the salts and minerals your body burns through during exercise. Beer jokes aside, an isotonic drink and a banana is ideal.

Post game meal - Dependent on when you're next active dictates what you need. If you're not doing anything for the next couple of days or more, go high in protein (75-85% protein) to give your body chance to repair itself. Tin of Tuna or Fish in Brine with a nice big salad is ideal. If you're active the following day it is best to go 50/50 on carbs and protein to give your body a chance to repair whilst starting to get your carbs stocks built up to go again. My favourite was Noodles and Salmon with a bit of salad.

If anyone wants more information, I'm happy to share what knowledge and experience I have.

Thank you for that post, it is really informative.

I find it very hard to drink any water while playing games. Seems to weigh me down. I drink 2-3 liters a day otherwise. What seems to influence my energy level more is too many minutes between shifts. Is that because I am properly hydrated going into games or should I stop being a baby and force some water down throughout the game?

My main issue with drinking on the bench is I apparently chug it too fast: once I'm back on the ice and sprinting around again, I usually have to burp.

If you are feeling tired to the point of sleepiness/exhaustion then that is probably more indicative of your overall fitness level at the moment than anything hydration or nutritionally related. It could also be your respiratory system hasn't adjusted to being pushed to the max during a shift to going back to a rest state and then back to max effort again and so your brain isn't getting enough oxygen which in turn makes you just want to sleep. One thing I can suggest in the short term is to concentrate on your breathing whilst you're on the ice (you'll be surprised how many people forget to breathe during intense bursts), the other more long term if you want to improve your fitness is to go and do interval training or more applicably HIT training. Overall though your body will eventually get used to it though. I used to be especially bad for getting the yawns during pre-season camps (I was a goalkeeper - I don't like running!).

Xzzy If you are already gulping it down, chances are you're already dehydrated before you get on the ice. You should only really need a couple of sips just to keep you going.

BUY MORE CRABS
I only ever really have problems running out of breath. After getting stuck on the ice for a long shift or something, sometimes I'm still wheezing and taking big, exaggerated breaths on the sideline by the time I have to jump back on the ice. I get to the point where I feel like there's no air left in my friggin lungs long before my muscles get tired or I get dehydrated

I always piss clear before and after playing and I rarely feel thirsty. I'm not drinking a ton of water (maybe 24 ounces over 2 hours), but the water I do drink I apparently drink too fast. :v:

Sleepiness

Yeah, it's not a sleepiness thing and I do HIT training. It's like I do my warm up & stretch, and I feel good. But it seems like sometimes if I go too long between the first 3-5 shifts I easily lose that "warm" feeling and it takes longer than it should to get my sweat started and sustained. After that I feel great and "in the rhythm". Maybe it's a mental thing too.

I'm probably going to change my warm up. Jump rope, etc I do what you say for diet almost all of the time whenever possible.

If game before 9PM: avoid energy drinks, maybe have a 5-hour before game, gatorade after if I remember. Maybe a nap, who knows.

If game after 9PM: whatevs, avoid drinking too many beers pre-game

Yeah seriously, I eat what I eat and make sure that's done at least an hour before playing and not something that's going to make me feel like poo poo. I bring a regular sized water bottle to the rink and take a squirt or so from it right after I get off the ice from a shift.

I just picked up a Bauer TotalOne stick yesterday at my local Peranis for $150. It was already marked down to $180 since the new model is out, and then they have a "start of season" sale with 15% off of everything in the store. It was also the last right handed one there, and it was in the curve I use, so I can't help but feel that I got lucky as hell.

So that's my gear story. Anyone in Pittsburgh looking for new gear should swing by before thursday if you get the chance, since the sale ends at the end of the month.
