An article about WFMU's costs post-Sandy:

The Star-Ledger posted:

"The hurricane also has forced the cancellation of the popular WFMU Record Fair, an annual swap of vintage vinyl that serves as the station’s most reliable fundraiser. A blog post at WFMU.org minced no words about the meaning of the cancellation, calling it a "financial disaster" for the station.

Freeman estimates that the swamping of the Record Fair will mean a $150,000 loss for the station. Add that to an estimated $100,000 in "fried equipment," and one of the world’s most fearless stations is facing a quarter-million-dollar disaster."

I hope Tom can pull off another successful fundraiser :(

Wow. I hope they can pull through this. I threw some money their way last week (went for the Terre T premium since I already have the Best Show one coming) but I had no idea it was that bad.

I know they can raise $250,000. Didn't Tom alone do $300,000 one year? Or wasn't that for just one show? I can't remember. Anyway, I feel like people would be more likely to give when the station is really in trouble than during a normal fundraiser. All that being said, I'm going to donate $50 with my next paycheck and get what I'm sure is a delightful shirt.

The numbers Tom has raised each year comes from the entire marathon, which lasts a month and takes over two Best Shows. I think they'll hit their goal, but I imagine it's tougher than a normal marathon because a good chunk of their donor base are dealing with hurricane damage and there isn't people who are just renewing their previous monthly pledges from the last year.

Is there a reason that they can't just reschedule the record fair for next month?

Hundreds of vendors to coordinate, venue, bands, DJs, etc., etc.

It'd be a shell of itself even if they could get it off the ground.

Ken mentioned that they're looking into having it another time but they're not sure how they'll be able to do it yet. If anyone's interested in the money stuff for the station and doesn't normally listen to Ken's show on Wednesday, check out the last hour of his most recent show and he explains a lot of it.

I'm guessing that they'll hit their emergency goal pretty easily since people will be happy to help, but hopefully it doesn't cut into what they get for their actual marathon since its only a couple months away.

Tom alluded to Chuck Woolery resorting to some really personal attacks on twitter earlier today. Does anyone have an idea of what happened?

Woollery made a bunch of vague claims that Tom associates with/gives aid and comfort to, in his words "Wife-beaters".

Chuck Woolery was too dumb to even stick a link in the tweet. I'd love to see the source for his claim because I am sure it's something taken hilariously out of context.

I enjoy it, he's one of those callers Tom bounces great from. One of the rare callers I'd love to be in studio with Tom one of these days.

Im assuming everyone else saw the fact he went straight to plugging his record from a mile away right?

(Also I need to dig up the episode where he calls in when Hatch, Maggie, and Daniel were hosting and he spectacularly flames out and he wasn't "trolling" either )

For a while it just felt easier to believe that Zach from Mit Hamine had this sort of unmodulated bit--the thing was a schtick but he wasnt able to entirely shade it in the right way...but then Tom gives him two minutes and it was the mother of flame-outs. The way his voice started to crack without talking back to Tom was sort of amazing and equally maddening.

What a weird shitstain--it felt like Tom was actually going to curse at him.

I just listened to the recent episode with Wurster doing that Newbridge rock star and it was reallly, really funny. "A cornucopia of chokejobs and balls dropped" cracked me up, plus all the overuse of "bacchanalia." And the ending was obviously kind of premature for Tom which made it funnier.

I can't tell how much of his political stuff is trolling anymore. Or really any of his actions. He definitely probably has the biggest ego of any of the callers.

Hey can anybody identify the song playing at 1:15:00 of the 9/23/2008 episode? It's a piece of music that he just says is from the 80s. It's not in the shownotes, and he never names it.

Edit: Nevermind, it's Love Plus One by Haircut 100. Fooled around with it and was able to make out some lyrics.
