Twin Cinema posted:Plus, I think it's one of those things where The Wire does have a large presence online, at least in all the corners I go to, but that presence is probably not enough to justify putting the work into a Blu Ray. Especially when that Blu Ray would probably cost $150-200 for all of the seasons, which would probably be a price range some/most of the potential buyers would not be able to justify. I bought the DVD boxset "on sale" for around $70-80. They'd have to release them a season at a time anyway. With the right marketing it could be huge. HBO are massive right now and a lot of people would go nuts for a "new" series. Particularly if it's the one that friend of theirs keeps saying is the reason HBO is so good. e: oops, double post

Even when I saw Lawrence of Arabia in 4K (8K scan from camera negative), the film grain was extremely fine. More reason why it's inexplicable why Fox even bothered with DVNR since even an older transfer would only have more video-based noise that isn't that bad (see the HD-DVD of Spartacus).

I'm not even that overly sensitive when movies apply a fair amount of EE or DNR but that original pic looks disgusting. I just can't fathom how someone can find relatively fine film grain more distracting than having a Bluray film look like it was shot on an SD digital camera. I almost thought that guy was trolling but apparently he spent a long time on those forums arguing that the Predator Bluray looks flawless so I guess he's just a crazy person. kuddles fucked around with this message at 14:55 on Nov 6, 2012 |

A lot of people just don't know how to properly use or set up new tvs. And like Cemetry Gator, said there are some people who will never admit they're wrong. So I'm sure plenty of people have no idea of what HD is supposed to look like. This is probably why excessive DVNR is even a problem.

Yeah, that's certainly part of it. I just know there are a lot of people who have terrible opinions like preferring to watch SD content stretched or movies being altered so that the aspect ratio is 16:9 no matter what, so frankly I'm sure there are a lot of people who can tell what HD content is but still genuinely believe that "HD = no film grain" and I'm afraid of studios listening to them.

It's expensive as hell but it breaks the DRM on everything on the fly (and it receives regular updates so if new DRM is released, they will break it eventually) If you don't mind using Buttcoins, they are running a 40% off deal where you can get a lifetime license for $90.69 - edit Oh, and you still need a standalone piece of software to play the discs. So Arcsoft or something of that nature. Call Me Charlie fucked around with this message at 17:10 on Nov 13, 2012 |

Wow, I never realised AnyDVD HD was so expensive. It does work pretty well though, I'll give it that. I got fed up with the Bluray player in my PC though, and just went for a Panasonic standalone and hacked the firmware on it (which works great). Blu-ray integration into media centres was always pretty ropey back about 3+ years ago, maybe it's better now. I don't regret the change though, personally.
