Performed my first 4 soul fist combo online today! It felt pretty good. I even got a love(?)mail about my Morrigan even though she's only decent. I'm just assuming he hadn't seen a Morrigan do any fancy combos online.

I couldn't make it last night, sorry dudes. Does anyone have the links to GF from last weekend's tournies? I'd like to see the Nova/Spencer/Strange stuff Viscant was talking about. Yesterday I decided that Nova would be a better point for Sent/Dante than Wolverine and started playing with Nova for the first time since Ultimate came out. Holy poo poo Nova is such a good fit. He has much better synergy with Drones/Jam Session than Wolverine does. He has options for protecting the drones call. He can extend his combos with either drones or Jam Session. He can very easily covert off of Jam Session into a full combo. His simple combos are easy and do Wolverine damage. I like Sent/Dante but Wolverine has a bunch problems with them. He can't reliably get a full combo off Jam Session so he has to TAC for damage. Extending his combo with Jam Session is a bit timing sensitive and I drop it occasionally. He can't protect a naked drones call, he has to put the opponent in blockstun in order to call drones safely. He can't easily extend his combo with drones. I think to have a good Wolvie team you need to give him a beam and a lockdown assist. I don't want to play Iron Man, Mags, or Doom to get a beam assist so I think I'm gonna have to drop Wolvie.

What Joe assist does he use? What assists does Joe even have besides Shocking Pink? Mystic Ray is pretty good for Wolverine but good Shuma combos are not easy. I do like Shuma and Joe though.

I do like Shuma and Joe though. I just looked it up and Joe's assist is shocking pink but he doesn't play shuma gorath anymore lol he plays Rocket Raccoon anchor.

The interesting thing here is that nothing in that video is really all that new. Rogueyoshi and other players demonstrated similar Strange corner combos in Youtube videos shortly after UMvC3 was released. What is new is someone actually running with the idea of pairing Nova/Spencer's ability to carry any and every combo to the corner with Strange, and that's just because no one wanted to deal with his deficiencies until Nemo showed the pluses of the team's composition I guess.

What's awesome is that Nova is really mobile and fairly hard to block for more than a few seconds, so you can use Nova's advantages to open people up, get a kill with Strange, and then set up and Eye of Agamotto to allow Nova to tag in and set up an entry mixup. It's a self-perpetuating gameplan that's really strong. Also, it's not broken cause that Flames Of The Faltine loop is hard as gently caress.

It's annoying as gently caress that he has it but the solution is to just not pushblock. Plenty of other characters already have setups like this and the way to not get thrown is to not push, you really shouldn't be in that habit on incoming. You can't be airthrown after blocking if you don't push so just don't do it if you know there's a throw opportunity coming up. I spent a bunch of time working out ways to get Frank's FFC on incoming characters and then found this out and was pretty sad.

The neutral game in Marvel is a two step process, first you have to exert control over the match and then you have to use that control to actually open your opponent up. Being able to see when you've done that first part and have the opportunity to go into the second takes a lot of experience. Find something that your opponent is forced to respect; moves with big, space controlling, hitboxes that give you a combo like Haggar's pipe, Doom's Foot Dive, and Virgil's everything. This isn't top tier strategy in and of itself, but it lets you exert some control on the match fairly easily and safely, which lets you get a feel for when your opponent is afraid to press a button. The game has a lot of bullshit, the system is so open ended that a good deal (but certainly not all) of high level play revolves around engineering the most incredibly ambiguous and unfair setups possible. It can be very frustrating when you start playing, but the charm of the game is in watching and creating some really beautiful bullshit. Team dynamics is a big part of this but for someone just starting out you don't need to sweat it too much, you'll be better served by playing until you have a handle on things. Just make sure that in a typical match all of your assists are useful (and you're actually using them), your last character won't be useless on his own, and you can DHC between characters effectively.

There are still times where you can and can't do this safely which vary depending on character, assist, matchup, spacing, the list goes on; it sounds simple but there are a lot of factors involved. As a new player I know I had trouble getting a handle on those factors so I'm trying to outline the general thought process. There are much fewer ways that you can get punished for going for a Foot Dive and so I think it's one of the better ways to start learning the game.
