Bored posted:Terry Pratchett's "Going Postal" is on instant. It is fantastic! I did not read the book, but there hasn't been any lull in action like the other disc world movies. I enjoyed it, especially the casting of Vetinari. I was disappointed in the golems, though, and there were a couple of scenes from the book (the postman's test) I wish had been included. That and "Hogfather" are both pretty good. I would skip "The Color of Magic" or any of the animated films, though (all of them are streaming somewhere, between Netflix and Amazon Prime). , I guess

Just watched Resurrect Dead, mentioned earlier in the thread. That doc was FASCINATING. I've seen these tiles in Philly for years and never thought twice about them. The first time I saw one I actually stopped my friend so we could look at it. I assumed it was an interesting way to advertise some kind of movie marathon like the Exhumed Films Fest. Kubrick's 2001 made sense, then I figured Resurrect Dead and Toynbee Idea could be movies too. Then I just never thought about it even though I cross these tiles every day. Fascinating.

Stephen Fry's Greatest Gadgets is up. If you liked his show where he goes to America you'll probably like this too. Its 2 54 minute episodes about what he thinks are the 100 greatest gadgets.

Could anyone recommend some good westerns on Instant? Been playing Red Dead Redemption and it's gotten me in the mood to watch some. I'm more into the action westerns with really bad rear end characters and less into the ones where its more of a romantic story line. I'd prefer them to be in color as well, for whatever reason older movies never really hold my attention.

Seraphim Falls is good too, much more recent with Pierce Brosnan and Liam Neeson. Not sure if its still up, it sort of comes and goes.

I'm also a big fan of The Mercenary with Franco Nero and Jack Palance. There's another movie with them called Companeros that isn't on Instant, but is worth a watch. Death Rides a Horse is a solid Spaghetti Western with Lee Van Cleef. Sadly the Sabata trilogy isn't listed anymore.

Piranha was a fun movie with a surprising cast. It's an over-the-top gore fest, with a lot of sex and drugs. The opening scene with Richard Dreyfuss gives it instant cred. Ving Rhames, Elizabeth Shue, Christopher Lloyd (basically the Doc Brown of fish know-how), and any number of porn stars. It's ridiculous, but I didn't hate watching it.

My husband and I laughed for a good minute at Vetinari's reaction to the joke. And the golems could definitely been done better. You and I are on the same page for the all of the Pratchett movies on Netflix, I think. "Hogfather" had some drag. Still pretty awesome, though. I would love to see one of "Mort". Unfortunately, I think a big production company would have to be involved in "The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents." On subject, Lockout was pretty amusing. The script was terrible and the characters were cliches, but the acting somehow made the movie pretty fun. I was watching it thinking, "These lines would usually make me cringe. Why aren't they?" And this guy is in it. As well as this guy. Bored has a new favorite as of 18:22 on Nov 18, 2012 |

It was bizarre to use the same cast for all the golems (including damage!) when it would have been pretty trivial to paint them slightly differently or simply not include--for example--those two support bars on the backs of a few of them. However Vetinari was a total dreamboat .

But in reality, it is a remake of a John Wayne movie without John Wayne, and the original is better in basically every possible way.

It has a little of everything. Drunken sheriff who lost his nerve, young go-getter side kick, evil gang, shootout at an old church, etc. True Grit - you've already seen it essentially but with 90% less grizzledness. Fill your hands, you son of a bitch, etc. The Searchers - slower movie, but probably the most critically acclaimed. The Quiet Man - really a pretty awful movie but the best fight scene ever filmed. The Shootist - John Wayne plays a washed up gunslinger dying of cancer a couple of years before he actually died of cancer. Watch it last. You can generally tell a good John Wayne movie by whether or not he paddles a lady or threatens to paddle a lady in the town square at any point during the film. edit: there is a movie out there where John Wayne for some reason plays Ghengis Khan. I can't remember what it was, but I saw some Discovery Channel thing about this and they did tests of the soil really deep down (supposedly any radioactive material wouldn't have decayed that quickly) and found there wasn't any more radiation than any environment we're all exposed to every day and it was likely poor diet and whatnot that led to him developing cancer. I would guess that the higher than average rate of finding cancer was due to them all being paranoid about developing cancer and getting diagnostic tests that they otherwise would not have gotten and discovering cancerous growths that may have otherwise never proved to be any significant health threat or they would have died of something else before it became enough of an issue to notice under normal circumstances. The whole idea of that movie is loving ridiculous, though.
