Am I crazy for considering picking up a decent priced Old Style Dark Eldar lot? I know the new models are a lot nicer, but I still like the old ones from a 3rd ed nostalgia point of view.

If you like the models then go for it.

Yeah, I picked up 40 of the old Grave Guards because I liked the models.

I've started painting the Chosen from Dark Vengeance. I've gone for a Slaanesh scheme so they will probably end up like the Flawless Host. I can't help but think I've made a big mistake and won't be able to do these guys justice

PeterWeller posted:But Apocalypse and Spearhead are great expansions, and Planetstrike is fun despite its flaws. Planetstrike and Spearhead (and, to a lesser degree, Cityfight) were really cool ideas that, like Apocalypse, just didn't have very well-thought out rules. I would love to see some sort of functional system for planetary invasions, rugged urban battles, tank clashes, extended campaigns, etc, but the systems GW has provided always fall so short of the mark that it's usually better for our group to just make something up instead.

All the little details are great for drybrushing and highlights. You'll do fine. Post pics. I'm finishing up my two Chaos Spawn and Sorceror from the Chaos Warshrine today and then I've got a few more DV models to paint up for the oath thread. I still need more Spawn though, having only 4 at this point. On a separate topic, I was giving someone an introductory 700pt game using Chaos Space Marines. My Chaos Lord turn into a Daemon Prince and just annihilated everyone. I felt a little bad. :/

One thing I've noticed about plague marine champions is that you can't exchange the plague knife for a power weapon/fist. You'd have to drop your bolt pistol. You can exchange a bolt pistol or a close combat weapon for a weapon from the melee weapons section but the plague knife is not technically a "close combat weapon". It's not a big deal. The only thing you're really missing out on is a bolt pistol shot before you assault. You can use the plague knife as your offhand weapon in melee.

AbusePuppy posted:Don't get me wrong, I do play Apocalypse now and again and enjoy it, but I find that most of the time I enjoy it the most when it's just a big ol' battle and we don't bother using the actual Apocalypse stratagems and special deployment and all that stuff. I disagree. I like the Apoc stratagems and deployment specifically because they make it more than just a big ol' battle. Spearhead makes a fantastic 'Apoc Lite'. Cityfight is great despite its age. Planetstrike is very flawed, the weakest expansion they've done, but it still does a really goof job of making the game a desperate clusterfuck to control the table. Even that tiny little Deathworlds WD expansion they did near the end of 5e was tons of fun, even when seeker lightning shot down my razorwing on turn 1. And while it's a lot of fun to write your own rules and scenarios, the GW provided ones have to big advantages. One, you don't have to spend time making up rules and can get right into playing. And two, you don't have to worry about any sore feelings because the rules you wrote gave one side a distinct advantage. But it's whatever, really. The nice thing about these things is they're optional expansions, and you can totally write your own scenario rules if you prefer, so you don't need to get them if you don't want them. Really, my only complaint about Crusade of Fire is that I'd prefer to see an update of Cities of Death or Apocalypse before a new expansion. Anybody seeing a spot to grab one of those new Skullcrushers of Khorne? Seems the easiest way to convert a Lord on a Juggernaut but so far all I'm finding is the three unit set.

There is the Finecast single model, but for what GW is charging for that thing, you might as well get the set of three. Try seeing if a friend will split the cost and contents of a box with you or something.

I probably just need to wait a little longer. People sell the Bloodcrusher set in split sprues so I'll hopefully be able to do the same thing with the Skullcrushers soon.
