Once I hear what some of you folks think of it, I might buy a bottle of it. I'd kind of like to take a bottle of it along for Thanksgiving dinner. I'm beginning to like Bell's Java Stout more than FBS as a coffee stout. FBS is wonderful and all, but the coffee taste from JS is spectacular. I asked the guy at my local beer store if he can order some Peche Mortel, I really need to try some, so I can compare it to the other coffee stouts I've tried. I should also say that I still really love FBS and it's still one of my absolute favorite stouts, and it's quite a bit more complex than the Bell's, but I just love the coffee flavor a lot more in the Bell's. I went to a Food and Wine festival in San Diego where I got to try a lot of different wines and beers. First, I tried out Goose Island's IPA and Honker's Ale, which oddly, is a thing we don't get in So-Cal (we only get Matilda, Sofie and Pepe Nero). I don't really recall much of them, but after that I wandered over to the Boston Beer Co. tend and I do recall having Samuel Adam's Cinder Bock there and my recollection of it was that it was objectionable. Sickly sweet as hell with very little of the smoke character it was purported to have.

Founders only distributed here on a temporary distribution license and they only brought a single keg of KBS.

A keg of BCBS seems to be getting tapped here tomorrow without much hype (yet!). I guess we'll see how long that lasts. I can't decide if I want to go check it out or just content myself with random strong beers from the fridge. I need to buy more Storm King; it is on the shelves more often than stocked at home, and that's not right. In unrelated news, Shlafly's T-IPA (Tasmanian IPA) is incredible right now.

I asked the Goose Island rep if SoCal will ever get any BCBS and she basically laughed and said fat chance. She said we had like 40 kegs allocated, but none that are packaged. She sort of implied it could arrive next year but was pretty tight lipped about it Angry Grimace fucked around with this message at 00:41 on Nov 20, 2012 |

Back when I was first dipping my toes into the world of craft beer I bought a bottle of BCBS at a store (Bev 4 Less) that's known to "acquire" things not distributed here, and mark it up. I think I paid $13 for what, if memory serves, was a 2010 bottle. I consumed it a night or two later, and my notes of it say "good stuff, bourbon and wood flavor, pretty boozy." Well done, past self. Well loving done. In a smarter world I'd be opening that bottle this Christmas.

That's what it goes for at bars nowadays in Chicago and that's with way more hype than it was getting in 2010. Ballast Point only goes to outlying areas in Illinois (we don't get it in Chicago). Even stuff from further up north that is available in SD like Russian River and maybe some of the Oregon breweries you might get would be in heavy demand anywhere east of the Rockies. We're pretty solid for beers here, but there's tons we don't get.

Reading Ballast Point I want to note that at the store in Mass. I frequent it went from 7.99 / 22oz. to 10.99 now. Guess I'm not drinking Sculpin anymore.

Drinking a 2010 Bigfoot, sooo good. Hops have faded more than expected (they tend to last a bit longer), but this rich burnt sugar taste is fantastic. In other Chicago non BCS news, Half Acre is re-releasing their barleywine. Its similar to Bigfoot but has their own hop twist.

Ohio gets Ballast Point and AleSmith. Weird that Chicago doesn't. I'm drinking Goose Island Christmas Ale and I don't know what to think. It almost reminds me of what Brown Shugga tries (successfully) to do which is make a super sweet brown ale. Except what the hell is in this? Cranberry juice? Cherry juice? I can't quite put my finger (tongue?) on it. It's not terrible but I think it failed at whatever the hell it was trying to do.

Price check for FW's 16th Anniversary and Double DBA? I loved DDBA on tap but somehow didn't know exactly what it was until very recently and now want more. The place which has them has the 16th anny for $25 and DDBA for $22, each of which on the surface seem high. funkybottoms posted:in VA we get Ballast Point, Green Flash, Mission, some Lightning, and Stone. so, that's a few dozen from San Diego alone that i can't buy, much less the rest of California. I seem to remember a few people speaking highly of Schlafly in either this thread or the last one- can anyone recommend a few of their brews? I have a friend in St. Louis who says he'd be down with sending me some beer for Christmas, so I'd like to know what I should have him look out for. Also what else of note might he be able to find in STL that doesn't make its way down to NC?

Picked up 2 bottles of Olde Hickory's Event Horizon last night, and they also had it on tap. drat that's a delicious stout. Heavy on the barrel straight off the tap, but as it warmed up I got tons of dark chocolate and figs balanced on top of the bourbon. Should hopefully be getting 4 more bottles from Total Wine later this week. Seems like they made a ton more of it this year than last, I know several bottle shops that didn't sell out their allotment during their release parties. Whereas last year, if you weren't there within the first 30 minutes, you were out of luck.
