Just wanted to add, for whatever reason, the 30" Korean Monitors have a very small discount on the U3011 for pixel perfect, $200 or so the last time I looked. I'm not sure why it's such a dramatic difference compares to the 27" monitor discounts.

The PPI is actually the same, they just cut off 520 pixels vertically; both are still 2560 pixels and 27.5" wide. The Korean monitors are also missing a lot of features of the Dell: DVI input only (and no console input on the cheaper versions), a terribly lovely stand with little/no adjustment, no USB hub, iffy QA and backlighting, and of course they come with effectively no warranty whatsoever. Not saying that there's never a case for them, but they're not always the bargain they appear to be if you appreciate any of the aforementioned things.

A u3011 has nearly 50% more pixels and a higher PPI and wide gamut. That's a lot of pixels to give up. I think it is priced appropriately and I think it is definitely better for specialist applications.

23" Viewsonic IPS for $159, which is pretty much the same price as TN's, and from a reliable manufacturer. Am I missing something or should I jump all over this?

As someone who's going to mostly play games and code, I'm assuming that 7ms IPS is worth it over a 5ms TN?

They probably make a ton more 27s than 30s. I think people were saying that the 27s are used in a lot of gaming cafes.

Yes. Response times are made-up 100% lies anyhow, so don't worry about them. If you're not the type of gamer who still resists LCDs because their 120Hz CRT lets them head-shot all the CS newbs, you should be ok.

IPS monitors are definitely for the old man to enjoy some high-brow video content on with while he sips cognac and leans back in his overstuffed leather chair, puffing a Cuban.

Or, you know, porn.

Well, when you're staring into dank holes, better contrast and dynamic range can help bring out those details

I just ordered that for $210.94 after tax. My older U2311H has been an absolute pleasure to use for gaming, TV, movies, and browsing for almost two years now, and lately I've been wanting two of them. I imagine the small difference in input lag won't matter if I'm only using one of them for games while the other runs Netflix and such (correct me if I'm wrong).

serious question here, is there really any reason to with three 27" monitors over one 30 with flanking 20" widescreens in my situation?

I play games. I do OS work. I design networks and like to gently caress about with random computer stuff... But last time I tried to go triple monitor (3x24) I absolutely hated it and never used the 3rd monitor for more than viewing youtube videos or putting my music player on visualization.

I guess I just need a confirmation that i'm somewhat mentally handicapped and can't utilize a third monitor that I bought, but, wouldn't it just make more sense to use a 20" in portrait rather than a 27" in landscape?

Pure insanity

Why not put two of the 27" monitors in portrait, and have the landscape one be on one of the sides for gaming.

There isn't really an answer to your question. It really depends on what every individual person does and prefers.

I'd detest having a single monitor no matter how big it is.

Absolutely. I couldn't do a single screen anymore either. Work = duals, home = duals (currently), but I used to run a 3x24". Couldn't stand it after two weeks, one of the monitors just sat there turned off 90% of the time because I never wanted to drag windows to the left. I think I'm going to try a PLP setup with 2007FPs but I dont honestly know how it'll go.

So, my girlfriend is building a hackintosh and has resigned herself to getting a non-apple monitor. Going to try and surprise her with a nice apple display, but based on this thread it looks like the only ones available now (non-thunderbolt) are old refurbs. Do I have any better options, or is she going to have to get over her apple fandom?

Quite. Buying a new Apple monitor is such an inflated cost already, that it seems like you may as well go all the way.

Size aside, how much more monitor am I getting from the Dell U2412M vs that 23" Viewsonic. A monitor is my major Christmas buy and I want to know if that extra $100 is worth it for reasons other than the bigger resolution.

Its a standard asus with 3D monitor and a IPS panel. It will work just fine. Two hdmi ports is pretty neat though.

I'm looking for a decent 22"+ display for my new superduper pc. I was checking that UltraSharp U2412M, but that's a little bit out of my price range. My price range is around $220 max. I'm looking at the newegg sales and they scream overhyped with the billion to 1 dynamic contrast ratios.

I just want an honest opinion on what to buy cause I rather check in with folks with a unbiased opinion than some vendors that want to get monitors out of their inventory cause they won't sell.

Wibla

Go with the U2412M if you can, it's a decent monitor, and you'll love the 1920x1200 res and good panel vs all the cheap as dirt TN / 1080p panels out there.

How much are you putting into your pc since you call it "superduper"?

What are you guys' thoughts on this IPS display from AOC? http://www.anandtech.com/show/6468/aocs-i2367fh-thin-virtually-borderless-and-ips

It's on Amazon for $189. I love the look of it, but I'm wondering if it'd be better just to get the Asus IPS display for around the same price that everyone mostly has high praise for.

And your going to skimp on the one thing that will outlast the computer? Spring for the U2412M or the 23inch 2312hm (which is in your budget range).

Wibla
Feb 16, 2011

Stretch your budget for the 24", it's worth it for the 1200p panel, and remember that, as incoherent said, the monitor will easily outlast your computer.

Is there another u2312hm for $200 deal somewhere?

I ended up missing out on the dell one (I wanted to let my wife buy my christmas presents for me for once, and by the time we sat down to buy it, the offer was over, even though it said I checked the details at once point and it said it was till the 23rd, gah).
