IIRC books weren't explicitly forbidden in Brave New World, but the culture was designed to strongly discourage interest in such solitary, intellectual pursuits. Pope Guilty fucked around with this message at 11:19 on Nov 26, 2012 |

Lucy Heartfilia posted:I think both were right. But whatever... I'm not arguing for or against the picture, but I thought it was interesting. "A Brave New World" didn't read like a dystopian novel to me, even though the author clearly intended it to be read that way. It read more like what an utopia would be like once it's obtained, and what the cost would be of maintaining a society without suffering. Wikipedia posted:A former guerrilla fighter and a member of the Broad Front (left-wing coalition), Mujica was Minister of Livestock, Agriculture, and Fisheries from 2005 to 2008 and a Senator afterwards. As the candidate of the Broad Front, he won the 2009 presidential election and took office as President on 1 March 2010.

I have family over in Uruguay, and they tell me hearing about the president just randomly stopping people on the street and chatting with them. I think it had happened to a family friend of theirs. Creationist stuff always get my blood boiling. It's still amazed at how some states can still teach it or whatever. How does something like that even end up happening? Reminds me of school textbooks that are made to "forget" some stuff (like the Japanese involvement in some crazy stuff during World War 2) or that are modified to favour some current political party/person, like the following ones from Argentina during Perón's government: From some learning to read/write book, probably: First Page: Evita looks at the Girl. The Boy looks at Evita. Second Page: Perón loves children. My mom, my dad. Evita, Perón. The next ones look to be from some sort of really simple history book, so probably for really young children: First Page: Debts. It must be really sad to owe a debt and not be able to pay it. Everyone should pay back to their creditors. Second Page: Only a major cause can justify not paying a debt. Argentina, until recently, owed a lot of money to many nations. General Perón was the first President to pay back everything that was owed. (This one is pretty funny because Argentina has always had back and forth problems with its debt; we are still having problem with it nowadays) First Page: The Nation rejoices! It's Liberty Day, 25th of May! The Historical Plaza is filled with neighbors, as it was that 25th of May of 1810. Second Page: Back then, the people gathered to conquer their freedom; today, they gather to cheer for General Perón and the good he has done for the country. Going to the URL watermarked on some pages takes you to a complete version of that book. It's here for anyone that might want to see it, but fair warning it's uploaded to some strange site and it's in PowerPoint format for some insane reason (I hope it's OK to link to it like that). It has some pretty crazy stuff if you know any Spanish.

First off, space was not the result of a "sudden explosion". The Big Bang Theory postulates that everything came into existence at once and from their has ever since expanded outwardly from no single point in time and space. Second, the Earth is roughly 5 billion years old, not millions. Third, fossils don't show "the great geological ages", the geological record does. Fourth one is more or less correct, although I'm sure an evolutionary scientist might take issue with the phrasing. Finally, nowhere in evolutionary theory is it claimed that the human species, Homo sapiens, is some kind of end result of evolution, for which like the geological record there is no end. Now here's a documentary about Jack Chick. http://youtu.be/YzVFO_0Xb0w

I love this. With the exception of one (maybe one, if you give them quite a bit of creative license with the language) all of the "evolutionist viewpoint" are completely wrong and ignorant of evolutionary theory. Man is highest, followed by women, then cats and dogs, then farm animals, then the rest. hah Creationist food chain:

EZLN post! From Wikipedia: quote:The Zapatista Army of National Liberation (Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional, EZLN) often referred to as the Zapatistas, is a revolutionary leftist group based in Chiapas, the southernmost state of Mexico. To better understand what they are about, here's part of a hilarious Zapatista response to an article in an anarchist magazine that stated that the "EZLN are NOT anarchist": quote:You are right. The EZLN and its larger populist body the FZLN are NOT Anarchist. Nor do we intend to be, nor should we be. In order for us to make concrete change in our social and political struggles, we cannot limit ourselves by adhering to a singular ideology. Our political and military body encompasses a wide range of belief systems from a wide range of cultures that cannot be defined under a narrow ideological microscope. There are anarchists in our midst, just as there are Catholics and Communists and followers of Santeria. We are Indians in the countryside and workers in the city. We are politicians in office and homeless children on the street. We are gay and straight, male and female, wealthy and poor. What we all have in common is a love for our families and our homelands. What we all have in common is a desire to make things better for ourselves and our country. None of this can be accomplished if we are to build walls of words and abstract ideas around ourselves. And here's some pictures: They've been buddies with a lot of international oppressed groups: "Long live Zapata, hero of the Mexican revolution - 1915. Long live Abd al Kader al Husseinim, hero of the Palestinian revolution - 1948"

nubdestoryer posted:Huxley was an optimist, in Brave New World he thought genetic engineering would be necessary to create people dumb enough to enjoy such a society Well, within the context of the book the people that were genetically engineered to be dumb were the lowest caste of workers, so it makes sense that if you want social stability within a system that is as highly stratified while not utilizing overt violence against dissenters you have those at the bottom be as unaware of their position as possible, leaving only the mental capacity to complete their menial tasks. This caste was also conditioned to associate things like books and flowers with pain as children so as to keep them, even in their mentally stunted state, from developing through the enjoyment of things other than work. Mark Twain and Nikola Tesla just hanging out. Darkman Fanpage fucked around with this message at 22:24 on Nov 26, 2012 |

"Riot police is seen covered in milk as farmers dump milk on the European Parliament during a demonstration in Brussels on Nov. 26" In more depressing picture news: quote:In the “doll test,” psychologists Kenneth and Mamie Clark used four plastic, diaper-clad dolls, identical except for color. They showed the dolls to black children between the ages of three and seven and asked them questions to determine racial perception and preference. Almost all of the children readily identified the race of the dolls. However, when asked which they preferred, the majority selected the white doll and attributed positive characteristics to it. The Clarks also gave the children outline drawings of a boy and girl and asked them to color the figures the same color as themselves. Many of the children with dark complexions colored the figures with a white or yellow crayon. The Clarks concluded that “prejudice, discrimination, and segregation” caused black children to develop a sense of inferiority and self-hatred.

In Louisiana public schools, we learned about evolution. Granted, it wasn't explained in-depth or at all well, and some teachers tend to preface the lesson with "This is all junk." But we do learn about evolution. Feel free to correct me, but that textbook is not used in Louisiana public schools. EDIT: By state-sponsored, I'm assuming the article is talking about our bullshit charter schools. Carry on! Since Angry Avocado posted the first one:
