They weren't using U3, and U6 must have been astronomically high during that era. Look who they didn't count in the 30's:

BLS posted:

Persons marginally attached to the labor force are those who currently are neither working nor looking for work but indicate that they want and are available for a job and have looked for work sometime in the past 12 months.

It is tragic. I don’t think something like this will happen again. Don’t think that the people in Bangladesh who perished didn’t want or need those jobs, as well. I know we like to victimize everyone in this country, particularly when it comes to for-profit motivation, which is being assaulted. But, you know, it is a tragedy but I think it is a stretch, an amazing stretch, to sort of try to pin this on Walmart but, of course, the unions in this country are desperate.

Worth considering that they didn't consider women, who belonged in the home rasing children, and filthy blacks, who are shiftless an unemployable, as part of the labor force then too.

No women, no African Americans. Might skew the stats a little compared with today.

HI, I'M HARDCORE SAX HERE TO DROP A NICE JUICY TURD OF A POST FROM UP ON HIGH
In 19th century Qajar Persia there was the phenomenon of "beauty" being women with light mustaches. This came about due to the transition from the homosocial world of pre-modern Iran, where public/literary expressions of love was typically by an older man to a younger man, institutionalized through Sufi practices. A key signifier of male beauty was the "budding down" (khatt-e-sabz, literally "green line") of his mustache. As Persia modernized there was internal pressure (especially from feminists) to end this strain of public homosexuality, which transferred onto the female and male body in interesting ways; for example, the phenomenon of Iranian men shaving their beard to imitate Europeans caused a great deal of social anxiety, as in Iranian tradition shaving ones beard turned you into an amrad, someone who is available to be sexually penetrated by other men. Afsaneh Najmabadi has a book discussing the modernist change to heterosociality in Persia.

Shah Abbas and his page, a typical representation of homosexual love in Persia

Ever seen McClincok? It's basically Fox News:The Movie, and shows that their attitudes aren't anything new.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3gR77Iulpy8

It ends with John Wayne getting back together with his wife after publicly beating her and humiliating her, on the the advice of his friends, and she becomes loving and submissive after that.

Also shown, paternalistic racism towards the Indians that Wayne stole his land from, eastern college educated "dudes" shown as idiots who don't have the common sense of frontier types, corrupt and inept government officials, and "I don't give jobs, I hire men."

Buglord
Mohammad Mosaddegh

Two time Prime Minister of Iran. Implemented social security (among other progressive things). His main thing was Iran for Iranians. He didn't want foreign powers mucking about in Iranian business. His biggest achievement was telling BP & the Crown to gently caress off, nationalizing the Iranian oil industry. This, naturally, pissed off the British. They tried to get Truman to help them oust him, but Trudy wasn't having it.

Quick side note: Britain couldn't carry out an operation like this on their own: they needed another allied nation (read: the USA); something to do with Iran loving hating them due to British Imperialism and control of Iranian oil even after it ended.

Fast foward to 1951: Eisenhower is president. Maybe the Brits would have more luck convincing him? Enter this rear end in a top hat:
Kermet Roosevelt Jr.

Yeah, our beloved Teddy's grandson. Caught up in the Red Scare, he convinced Ike that helping our island neighbors overthrow Mosaddegh and installing a puppet government was A Good Thing because Communism is scary, man. He totally glossed over the majority of Iranians being pro-USA & pro-democracy. I mean, look- the USSR is right next to Iran:

Turkmenistan was part of the USSR.
Even if Mosaddegh wasn't a pinko commie, there's no way he'd have been able to stop Ivan from taking over, having a larger border with western allies and gaining direct acces to a major waterway & all that sweet oil. Clearly, the only answer was to kick him out, put in a puppet and return more power to the Shah (who was a total western bitch).

In 1953, Operation Ajax :911: / Operation Boot :britain: was carried out. Long story short: Mosaddegh and his government were overthrown.

US/CIA involvement in the coup was unknown until many years later. This, as expected, completely destroyed any support the US had within the Iranian populace.
This is one of the major factors (I'd personally call it the biggest) in why Iran loving hates us.

Feel free to fix any errors I made :shobon: It's been a while since I've read up on it. A book I quite enjoyed on the matter is All the Shah's Men.
