If it was my call, I'd probably try to integrate something akin to Silent Hill the Room's system--like, the game would never really leave the office, limiting itself to just the nearby pub, a few lunch places, and maybe a park for breaks. Rather than focus on a whole year, I'd want longer, more detailed days--like there's a set schedule that you can follow or not, with varying results depending on what you do. Getting fired is an automatic game over, so you have to do a minimum amount of work to maintain your job, but...

You also have to investigate weird things happening in your building. Like, dungeons would be hidden in storage closets or be accessed by strange doors that appear. As the game goes on, the office building grows more and more weird and twisted--rooms appear, strange smells and visions are everywhere, and your various co-workers all come up with more and more excuses to ignore what's happening around them.

It would be possible for people and S-links to be killed, much like Catherine. It'd be your responsibility to try and keep everyone alive, keep your job, defeat the bad guys AND maintain healthy, stable relationships. I'd probably incorporate hunger and thirst aspects, have it possible to stay late after work, but have to suffer from it the next morning, and focus on the small, subtle changes in the office over the passage of a month or three.

Throw in half a dozen mini-games and an S-link with a pigeon who wears a scarf hanging out on the roof and you have an instant smash hit.

I'd like some kind of system that would account for the fact fighting a grueling ordeal day after day on top of your normal life may impact your life. Some kind of SAN system for those who know the Call of Cthulhu system. Fighting, getting hurt and poo poo, as well as maybe practicing and studying occult arts to enhance your chances of survival would make you less stable (but at the same time, maybe a tad more powerful in an already insane place), but you run the risk of snapping and attacking allies, while still socialising and taking time to relax and live normally and being saner would make you less powerful, but safer.

This is an interesting point. I agree, to a point--mechanically, yeah, the Devil Survivor system is a lot easier to navigate and play S-link system. But, at the same time, the way the Persona system works fits better with the slower pace of the game--you get a lot more absorbed in the scenes in Persona 3 and 4, and not just because you actually have animated people doing the scenes (though that does help.) It just encourages you to soak in the atmosphere more.

Well, that's because the Devil Survivor system- the Fate system from 2, is essentially an upgraded version of the Social Link system. It does the same things, but it also takes more cues from the plot than P3/4's systems do. Also, its direct effects on the party member in question were nice, too (which, incidentally, was implemented to a degree in P4G.)

So I'm in January, trying to get through Margaret's challenges. I finally managed to get the Strength guys down last night after about 5 tries, but any other room I've gone into has pulled out the "9999 Megidolaon" bullshit. I don't want to know all their gimmicks, but what triggers that? Because knowing that I was doing something that might let me win so the game said "gently caress you, I'm going home" is kind of frustrating, and I'd much rather avoid it.

Do you have the Omnipotent Orb on? I don't know about the challenges, but that does tend to get that response from the bonus bosses. Take off any equipment that nulls or resists everything.

Those are more puzzles than battles; the team and personas you're given all have specific purposes to help you pass the test. "what triggers what" is kind of giving away their gimmicks, isn't it?

While I really like some of his character design he really phoned in Strange Journey, there was absolutely nothing in that game that even approached his work on Nocturne or Persona 2.

I really hope that's not true because gently caress anyone that thinks Devil Survivor's character designs are close to Kaneko's. That's from someone that really likes the Survivor games as well. Soejima's great and all but I think it was better when Kaneko designed the characters and Soejima did the in game art. Persona 3's cast was just a bunch of anime cliche's while Persona 1 and 2 felt much more original in addition to half of 2 being over 18.

Hm. Think you ended up being right.

Speed Guardian took me a few hours to learn the pattern, but wasn't terribly frustrating. Fun fight. Luck was just...um...I spammed Mudoon 3 times and killed it on the last try. That was kind of ridiculous. Took down Power, so only 2 left.

I like these- they're a good use of the combat system, when I've pretty much got the main game broken over my knee.
I fused an amazing Thor with Elec boost+Amp, Mind Charge, Auto-Mataru, Null Wind (though this was originally Power Charge, I burned a skill card), Deathbound, and Ziodyne. Then I just had it in my roster with nothing else to do at night, so I was grinding arcade machines. It's only level 61, I'm pushing 70, and I have yet to find a Persona that does better single target damage.

I love the old SMT designs beacuse it's like nothing I ever saw game-wise. It's kinda like Dragon quest in that it has it's own distinct style. The devil survivor and the original demons in SMT IV just seem like generic demon anime to me (which I guess would explain why it's more popular :v:)

On the moon... they don't make Neo Kobe Pizza.

I always liked Kaneko's art in P1/2. The characters in those games looked so different from the usual anime fodder in other JRPGs. I don't know how to describe it either. Slick? Shiny? Modern? It's like they all matched the sharper urban edge of those games.

I don't really care that much for Kaneko, to be honest. I think it's the faces that kill it for me; the vast majority of them that I've seen poking around the SMT wiki have got this unnaturally pale, perfect porcelain doll look to them that I just don't care for. There's no animation or life in those faces; just a blank, emotionless stare.

I dunno I really like the whole porcelain doll aesthetic he does, it makes alot of the designs seem "off" which fits the tone of most of the mainline games. I prefer that to the generic designs Saejima spits out. (Although his designs aren't horrible to look at like the Devil Survivor guy)

So I gave the PSP port of Innocent Sin a shot, and i'm really really baffled. I mean, the load times are kinda major, the plot so far has been batshit in a way that isn't what I would call fun, and I spent like 2 hours in the initial dungeon because the random encounter rates are absolutely insane. I just beat the first boss the Principal, and the dude threw himself off a four story clock tower. The party members couldn't give a poo poo, and then they start talking about Joker, and then this woman who i've known for five minutes starts waxing philosophical about doppelgangers and how i'm totally like the crazy motherfucker with demons because :psyduck:

I don't know, i'm really trying to like this, but nothing even makes sense. "Oh man you called me the Undie Boss? I'LL ACTUALLY loving TRY TO KILL YOU oh you guys can do that too that's cool ok lets call our own cell phones oh NO evil mask man, oh you want to kill me ok wait now these three dudes lost their souls". And nobody even seems to give a poo poo. Like, the Undie Boss dude mourned them for all of five seconds and then he's just hanging out with us talking poo poo about everything, and since we literally just left those three in the prison I doubt they're going to loving survive, and then I walk into the school fighting demons left and right while students just chill in the hallways. And then I walk into the different classrooms beating the poo poo out of the clocks, and everyone is totally cool with this? And they cheer me on? I mean holy poo poo, tell me it's trying to be this weird on purpose and I just have to keep playing, because god drat.
