One might be forgiven for thinking this is somewhere in the South (apart from all of the snow) but this is a really famous sign from Detroit before the 1960s. In the early 20th century an enormous amount of Southerners, black and white, moved to Detroit to work in the factories and racial politics got incredibly ugly. African Americans weren't allowed to buy houses in "white neighborhoods" so an increasingly large black population was stuffed into a very small portion of the city, usually far from the factories where they worked, almost invariably at the shittiest jobs in the factory. It got so bad that in 1967 after two African American veterans and all their friends were arrested at an unlicenced bar. Things got quickly out of hand and the poor people of Detroit (mostly black but there was a not insignificant number of poor white people rioting, something that isn't talked about much) started taking out their frustrations on the city. Governor Romney called out the National Guard but in the end he requested federal troops. My grandpa was in Detroit with the Guard and he's immensely proud to this day of the fact that nobody in his squad (he was the squad leader) injured or killed anyone. That said the Guard was pretty seriously trigger happy (being mostly rural white people who weren't too fond of Detroit and certain sorts of its inhabitants) and when the US Army showed up one of the first things they did was disarm the Guard. e: White flight was already occuring before the 1967 riot but it went into overdrive as terrified white people fled to the suburbs with all of their money. Detroit remains severely racially segregated and in regional politics "Detroit" and "suburban" are often codewords for African Americans and white people.

Don't misunderstand me: to say one doesn't know yet what they identify as is acceptable but different from "I'm nongendered. I'm nothing. Period, full stop." No, I'm sorry, that's not an option. The sad state of the city I grew up in. They were at one point considering moving people out and then cutting off city services to whole neighborhoods. A block people paint on a weekly basis. The paint must be inches thick by now.  Chevy in the Hole. At one point one this was a GM auto plant complex.  Vacant homes and neighborhoods.
