Oxxidation posted:This kind of goes beyond autism. Caliborn recognizes human emotions and concepts, he's just physically and psychologically repelled by anything on the positive end of that scale. He's not oblivious to other people's feelings; he recognizes, exploits, and abuses them, and views that as a legitimately laudable form of interaction. His learning disability is kind of savant-like, but the similarities stop there. The only time he's ever recognized a feeling that someone didn't state outright was when he knew Hussie thought himself funny. And anybody can see that :V There's just too much-autism related stuff. The inability to draw, the short sentences, the use of "special way of thinking." Or maybe he's just supposed to be left-brained and Calliope was right-brained. That'd explain why she was so emotional and such a good artist.

Bongo Bill posted:There is a name for the mathematical principle Caliborn describes for drawing that circle, but I can't remember what it is. It's no doubt laden with philosophical significance, too. I remember it now! It's related to Archimedes' method for approximating the value of pi. An infinite series of regular polygons with one more side than the last will converge upon a circle over an infinite number of iterations (therefore, the ratio of the polygons' perimeter to their area will converge upon pi). Caliborn has apparently independently discovered this principle, but can think of no better use for it than to deceive people into thinking that he has drawn a circle. I think this summarizes his personality very well. Yes, yes! This is it. Bongo Bill fucked around with this message at 06:07 on Dec 7, 2012 |

Huh. That thing about circles reminded me of something. This, in perticular: I've always thought that Homestuck might be cyclical in some way. I.E, we saw the Tadpole Genesis Frog fall into the Forge, while encased in an 8-ball. SnOwman was represented by an 8-ball, so it's possible that the new universe the kids will make is Universe A. Of course, Calliope suggested otherwise in her first chat with Jane, but how much did she really know? Probably only what she learned from Rose's book. Unreliable narrators and all that. With Caliborn talking about circles again, he might have engineered this in some fashion by manipulating the Alpha Timeline. Although why he would do that I'm not entirely sure.

Lord Justice posted:Huh. That thing about circles reminded me of something. I get the feeling that that long digression about drawing circles is going to be a topic of discussion and speculation for a while, there's definitely something going on there. Caliborn continues to be a very fun character. A bad, rude dude of course, but just as a character and tool of the narrative he's great. Hussie's often at his best when churning out crazy wordplay and alien-sounding dialogue, and the dozen different ways he had to describe Jane were hilariously skeezy.

Yeah, Caliborn isn't autistic, his condition is so much more thorough. He essentially only has one functional brain hemisphere (or at least, that would be our concept for his biological condition), and this has left him completely sociopathic. I assume that when Cherubs normally go through predomination, both sides of their personality ultimately merge, with one of them coming out of the process nominally in control but with the skills and abilities once limited to one personality or another now completely available. Predomination would also result in a "balancing" of the newly predominant personality, as one can assume would happen when a being formerly with access to only one side of its brain gradually gains access to the other side. Caliborn murdered Calliope before he could properly go through the process of normal predomination, thereby gaining access to his sister's skills. So, like Hussie said, he is stuck forever being a little creepy gently caress. Him being a static character is a plot point.

The last panel is making me think that the "LE is actually Caliborn's self-insert, not Caliborn himself" theory is getting closer to being correct. With all of those towers and monitors, it would be easy for him to observe everything that happens and plan accordingly so that his self-insert can work his magic without screwing things up. His little chat about the circles show that he's a bit smarter than he thinks he is. I don't think its that much of a stretch to imagine him eventually figuring out time loops and how to exploit them for his self-insert to use.

I don't think its that much of a stretch to imagine him eventually figuring out time loops and how to exploit them for his self-insert to use. I'm starting to like this idea too. Feels more... poignant? if the main badguy is still just a kid who's managed to make a monster, but isn't actually the monster or something like that. Maybe there's the possibility of redemption? Or maybe not? Kind of reminds of the end of Earthbound- uh, I guess I'll spoiler this just in case So you've got Gygax or whatever it was, who's this incomprehensible tortured mass of pure evil (maybe? maybe there's something else going on too). But you've also got that little poo poo-stain Porky, who should by all accounts just be a normal kid, but for no reason ends up just being ridiculously evil, as a contrast to Ness and his friend's heroism and goodness. Ness and co. grew and matured on their journey, confronting their fears and becoming friends, and Porky didn't. Also! You win by calling on the power of the other characters, including the audience itself! Fourthwall breaking is something HS is all about! So I guess that's how it ties back to Homestuck. There's Lord English, who's evil and powerful, yes, but it's Caliborn, the ultimate child, who's the real villain, as a contrast to the Kids and Co who have matured and grown.

The thing about Cherubs that I think is interesting is that the only way anyone of their species could be stunted developmentally in this specific fashion is through Sburb. I wouldn't be surprised if when it comes down to it, cherubs were biologically developed to cater specifically towards producing someone like Caliborn who could break Sburb in such a precise manner. What a gross, uncomfortable update, though. I mean, on purpose, but you know.

I definitely feel that Caliborn is either A) Actually describing his attraction to Skaia (I've seen this theory that Calliope will become Skaia, the most passive entity in paradox space, and Caliborn will become Lord English, the most active entity in paradox space) B) Foreshadowing Jane being related to Skaia somehow.

So someone made a really good Tumblr post pointing out how Caliborn is probably loving with Jane. First point: When talking with Dirk at least, Caliborn is perfectly capable of typing up words like "friend" and "love." Second point: In the latest update all the words he keymashes are in quotation marks- just like he used when playing Calliope at chess to pretend his king was his queen and vice versa. Sadly MSPA is still down so I'll just link the post (reblogged to avoid the original post's .gif background and autoplay music).
