Is the "Swallow Tail Cut" advantage on Scything blade that causes percentage damage still cool? STC counts as a bleed when used with Reaper's Embrace, so you get to consume 6 bleeds instead of the normal 5 if you max your bleed count, which means more damage. At least, that was the case when I tried it a year ago :v:

Make up your mind about if I have costume bundles mysteriously for free or not game, I don't want to make a character only to have half their costume stripped from them when I log in to play them later. These bait and switch shenanigans are getting confusing.

I'm probably going to fail spectacularly, but Rec Primary, Int/Con secondary for Power armor feels like an okay attempt at the moment, considering the Rec Tree's energy goodies.

Some of the costumes are given for free if you're subbed. They also might have been granted to people who were subbed in the past or before they added in the premium/gold tiers, but don't quote me on that.

Cryptic's costume unlocking has always been slightly... off, especially in the early days. I grabbed the six-month special back when the game first started (which is finally about to run out due to my credit card changing; can't transfer it to a new one) and managed to get half of the six-month art deco costume and half of the lifetime costume. :psyduck: Didn't matter enough for me to put in a ticket since I've never really used either, but sheesh.

Also... I've been thinking of handing the thread off to someone else, since I honestly haven't really played the game in months and I think I'll let my subscription lapse when my card goes. I've been playing STO a lot more these days, since it seems to be getting the lion's share of Cryptic's attention; I went to go update the OP with whatever winter event ChampO was doing, and there was... nothing to add. I was going to wait for some big patch/event as a good chance for it, but the only real event in recent memory was, uh, CoH dying, and that's not really a good excuse. If anyone really has a good idea for do a new thread, toss out an OP here for review and I'll close this one. Or just toss me poo poo by PM or whatever that needs to be fixed in this one meanwhile.

Yeah, but my confusion is this has happened before this week. I came back to champions, had those things unlocked... Patch comes, oh look they are all locked again! Even various times playing with the character creation today.

But this time, this moment restarting the game? Oh look, I have access to them again.

It's not that I gain them that is confusing me, but the fact I have them, lose them, get them again, so I don't know if it's safe to loving use half this stuff or not.

Along those lines, I am an idiot who didn't take the Tech Moon base for free, "Hmm, I think I'll use some of my old points to buy a base... I have coupons? *clicks dropdown* It says I have no coupons. *buys Sci-Fi Moon base* Now to go to my moon base *clicks hidouts* .... Free claim?... I could have gotten Moon base for free? Why the hell would I have ever clicked this hidouts button to find out if I didn't know I owned one yet?"

So I took the Arcane Sanctum for free. The game still says "You have coupons!" every so often when browsing the C-store out of curiosity, even though I never have any coupons listed in the dropdown.

At least from my mistakes, I was able to tell a few pals to check the hideouts button first as they dust off old accounts. So one got a free moonbase :unsmith:

EDIT: Aaand they are all back to locked again :argh:

Always, always select 'Hide unowned costume options'. Yes, you can select the costume from the dropdown menus, but with the option turned on to hide them, your player model will not show those 'owned' pieces you really don't own.

It's far more than 3 things, actually.

And the 3 things i'm guessing your thinking of are pretty huge. They not only made the end game bearable, they pretty much removed Gozer's lovely influence wholesale after he was kicked to the curb. The inclusion of a ton of varied end game content helps too. To the point where the game actually has a proper zone to explore on the ground, now. Never mind all of the new encounters, and queuables.

Either way, word is is that some of the CoH staff got recruited to both CO and and STO, so that's something at least.

The only big Paragon-to-Cryptic member I know for sure is Doctor Aeon, who was a major Mission Architect and, when that sorta stopped being a thing, started writing content for the game since about the Going Rogue expansion (so, he wrote the game when it was well-written). He went to STO, but I hope for CO's sake he writes some stuff for that. He knows how to write a superhero setting, and if I'm right about what he wrote he really knew how to write villains.

I decided to head back to this game after CoH went down, and I was happy to see that most of the stuff I unlocked back when I had a sub is still there. I'm a little bummed that I can't play my Gold characters, but I might end up resubbing since I feel like Cryptic is one of the only MMO companies that isn't massively scumbag.

So how 'bout them character builds? I don't have many available to me, but the ones I'm playing are working out pretty well. I'm told there's been a lot of rebalancing, so I'm guessing that means my Might dude won't be able to solo Legendaries anymore. That's too bad.

If i decide to unlock some though, which ones are pretty satisfying? I'm generally a melee person but I might spring for Specialist since I'm reading in this thread that pistols are actually worth a drat now.

My advice: find somewhere selling the boxed game for cheap. Note that you can only use one retailer box per account, so don't buy 10 copies from Amazon, as you can only use one Amazon copy. I've got Amazon and Best Buy on my account, wish I could find a cheap Walmart and Gamestop copy. Note that some of these will also come with extra costume parts or some real-money game currency too.

You can also contact amazon sellers who have the timecards cheap, and ask them if they'd be willing to just email you the code and not bother shipping the actual thing to you to save a few bucks.

Although I did that last one and the dude emailed them to me and then also mailed me actual ones, which worked out well for me of course, but still kinda lame as the communication seemed clear enough to me but I guess not.

Edit: Also to all the new people, :pcgaming: Free poo poo here :pcgaming:

Should still work. Gives you an Archetype, and a costume set. Also an adventure pack, but those are free in general now I think anyway.

For more free poo poo, play the game via steam and you should get some items (I think I got a sidekick?). You may have to make your account through it though, not 100% sure. There is also a bonus (that is ending very soon I guess) for linking your Cryptic account to a Perfect World account, feel free to take advantage of that.

sadly unfunny

So, I've been idly thinking about trying to get a Supergoon Safari going over the holidays. I have a few questions to that end:

How many of you guys have characters at level 40?
Do we think it's reasonably possible to get 5+ level 40s together for a few hours?
How interested are people in seeing the game's tiny collection of good, high-level, grouping-mandatory content?
Are people running Therakiel's Lair and just not talking about it?
I would need to rebuild my old regen tank to participate. What superstat/trait configuration makes sense for that?
How much misery is involved in getting livable stat-relevant gear around that level?

The one good thing about the old crafting system was that you could, with a little help, get yourself a suite of high-level equipment in whatever stat configuration you wanted. R.I.P, 38 blues.

If you can get into good groups, it takes maybe a week at most for a casual player to get to 40 now. A single XP alert gets you anywhere from 1 level, to half of one. And that's when they aren't running bonus XP weekends like CoH had.

Therakiel's lair runs do happen. Though if you want to get a good one one elite, your best bet is to avoid PUG's. There's a disturbingly high number of people coming into the game (I guess from CoH?) that can't build a freeform character to save their lives, recently.

Also, they countered the loss of crafting equipment with free equipment "lockboxes" that require no key. You do the tutorial quest, talking to someone in the game world, then you get a box that can be opened at certain levels.

The game also has WoW style heirloom gear. They actually handed out entire sets of it for the older players during the last anniversary. Having gotten a set, I can say it is indeed awesome. But if you don't have a set to fill all of your slots, it isn't that hard to get geared up.

Edit: Notably, there's even a few ways to avoid gearing entirely, too. You don't even have to rely on conventional gear. It's entirely possible to level up through vehicles, and just be the equivalent of a dinky pilot on the ground. There are also permanent transformation items that drop in the game world very rarely, and other ones that are purchasable from the shop.

Vehicles have their own gearing system that the stupid pubbies keep bitching about being underpowered, since they didn't start off as godlike destroyers of worlds in their hovertank. In reality, they're actually just as effective (And probably more, in some ways that put them higher up than characters. Like speed.) as them. However, vehicles are expensive, since the main way to get them is from the Z store. Which means you have to buy them from someone who already bought them, or from a special vendor.

Transformation powers range the gamut from joke powers that turn you into generic NPC's in MC (Like "Turn into Frank", which I think is one of the joke ones.), or turn you into mobs and bosses. They level up as you level up, too. And there's also a number of homages, like the Cyborg Ninja from Metal Gear being a Z store transformation option.

Today I log on and every time I go into an instance it gets a bit laggy until it'll suddenly disconnect me from the server. This doesn't happen when I'm in the open world, mind you; it only happens when I go into a mission instance.

Is this a common thing? Any tips on how to make this stop? I'm on a wifi connection, if that matters...though, again, last night I had zero connection problems.

I overhauled my regen character after the new stats- I'll have to load up the game to go over the Specs, but I went Dex, Str/Rec, focusing on the dodge bonus Dex spec and loading up on dodge gear and then taking Burning Chi Resurgence with the RR advantage. I didn't even intend to tank, but since I hardly ever have to block now, I end up DPS tanking.

To any CoH powerbuilders coming over, layering defenses works quite well here too. You don't even have to take Dex as a SS, since there's pretty good dodge mods at 40. (I went Dex to crit like mad).

This is funny, I actually queued up for an Ao today, and the queue popped just as zone chat was discussing what an awful nightmare fighting him was.
