I was under the understanding that the existing blu-ray had a good transfer.

The remaster came out in the UK a few months ago and it's loving gorgeous. A few people were bothered by the new color grading, but Cameron approved it all and the picture quality is such a leap up that it doesn't bother me at all. Assuming the bottom pics are the new version, it looks not only better but more true to the aesthetic of the film.

I really hope they finally announce something about The Abyss sometime soon. I mean god drat it doesn't even have an anamorphic dvd release. This is probably my most anticipated blu ray. Oh and True Lies too. Kind of blows my mind how terrible both those films have been handled. What gives?

Both of these are due next year, though it would definitely be around Christmas time for both - they might also hold back the Abyss until 2014 for it's 20th Anniversary, but the buzz right now is next year. The masters are being done right now though for sure, the only thing holding the Abyss back is that the extended cut effects weren't shot for HD. Both titles were given space in the Fox release catalog for reviewers/buyers. PriorMarcus fucked around with this message at 07:16 on Dec 6, 2012 |

The wait for the blu wouldn't be so infuriating if there was at least an anamorphic release on dvd. Even when HBO HD plays it the picture is 4:3 pan n scan and looks horrendous. I feel like I've never once seen the film anywhere close to what it was meant to be seen like.

So, do we know if an Arrested Development bluray is likely? Or will this depend on the success of the new season? I would think FOX would want to make another buck before/during the new run on netflix. Also, does anyone know if all the "archival" footage was actually shot on period cameras? I thought I read that somewhere... but I may have dreamed it.

Well, the Dark Knight Trilogy is getting some mixed reviews on Amazon (UK) mostly about the packaging and mismatched presentation of the disks. I will wait to hear more opinions before I decide to double dip the first two films for this.

Blah, Planet of the Apes BD is mediocre in picture quality. Scratches, streaks, washed out contrast. A step up from DVD, but not by much. Good thing it was cheap.

Welp, I got over it and bought Star Trek: TNG Season 1 at $70 and I'll probably buy Season 2 in a few months. I noticed that today for a very brief period, Season 2 jumped up to $118 on Amazon. I will never complain about these seasons costing $70 again.

Lizard Combatant posted:Is the Robocop transfer as bad as blu-ray.com says? Would I be better off getting the Criterion DVD? The Criterion DVD was one of their early ones and as a result, not very good. The early CC DVDs are pretty well known for this. In fact the regular ten dollar MGM DVD was a better transfer. Just get the blu-ray. The review doesn't really say it's bad so much as it says "it's flawed, but still the best it's ever looked". edit: I just took another look at this review and I don't remember the score being that low. It's also important to remember that the site is more of a reference guide and shouldn't be considered the end all/be all for anything to do with blu-ray. The only blu-ray available right now is the spanish one relased by Vértice Cine. The transfer on that disc is not great so it would be awesome if Criterion released an upgrade.

And yeah the quality is pretty poor but it's nowhere near as bad in motion, it's noticeable but it's such a great movie it doesn't matter.
