It's more traditional thrash than black 'n roll, but pure quality Immortal worship. Some of the better black 'n roll I've come across lately is Chapel's album that came out back in August, Satan's Rock 'n' Roll. rxcowboy posted:I've been on a thrash kick, listening to Toxic Holocaust, Warbringer, Vader, and Havoc lately. Okay, which one of you fuckers is it, own up. edit: on that note I am starting a brutaldeathgrindcore band, we will be named Satan Hatefucks a Goat oval office, I need like seven drummers and a dude that screams into a set of guitar pickups that aren't in an actual guitar.

I already mentioned I listened to them earlier, but if anyone hasn't listened to Iced Earth, you really should, because they are pretty bitching power/thrash metal: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQ_EGqAgRSg Part 3 of the Something Wicked This Way Comes trilogy, skip to 1:30 if you're a pussy and can't handle piano intros to metal songs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-GcSC86Tug Angel's Holocaust, Night of the Stormrider edition. Originally this song was on a earlier album, but this version cleans up a lot of their sloppy recording and the screaming in particular is much, MUCH better. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jy1sTePz73c Stormrider, the song that immediately comes after Angel's. If you pay attention, the beginning of this and the end of Angel's are actually connected with ambient sounds.

Night of the Stormrider is an ok album, but the stuff that followed just isn't something I can get into. That's mostly because I can't stand Barlows vocals though.

I think Iced Earth's first 4 albums are good (especially Burnt Offerings) but Something Wicked and beyond is pretty blah. The first one has good riffs but hilariously bad vocals.

I'm going to see Gojira next month and Devin Townsend is opening. Where do I begin with this crazy man? Listening to Epicloud right now. I hear he can be like Frank Zappa who I like a lot. Do I even bother with Strapping Young Lad? I imagine he'd only play songs from DTP.

I've been making a point to listen to whole albums at once to get a better feel for them. I'm always picking up new music, so I have a tendency to listen to a few songs off one album then switch to a new one. First up: Goatwhore's "Blood for the Master." In retrospect, perhaps I should have picked a less punishing album to listen to all the way through. Make no mistake, this is a fantastic CD. It's a mix of thrash, black metal, and a touch of punk. Fantastic guitar work, thundering drums, a good range of vocals. The flaw of the album is that every song is thematically similar. Ok, we get the fact that god came down from heaven and punched every single member of the band right in the dick. Repeatedly. These guys really, really, really have a bone to pick with god, and while the lyrics are well done it gets a little much over the whole album. I like an album with a dark theme as much as anybody but a little variety would be nice. Slayer at least had the courtesy to sing about the devil AND nazis. It's a punishing album to get through. I'm an atheist, I'm not offended by the content, however I just don't like the same thing being shoved down my throat for an hour. So giving this album a rating is somewhat of a challenge. Individually, all the songs are at least good, some are mind blowing. "In Deathless Tradition" is a standout track for me. If I listen to one or two songs at a time, the album easily gets eight and a half upside down desecrated crucifixs out of ten. A straight run through though gets six. It's one of the few cases where the whole is less than the sum of it's parts.

Basically get all the DTP albums, since you're right, it will probably be predominantly DTP material. With Strapping Young Lad, make sure to listen to City and Alien. Those two are the best (and some of the craziest) stuff he has done. Also worthwhile from his solo efforts are Ziltoid, Terria and Infinity. gently caress, just get it all, I'm already jealous enough that you get to see him live!
