This was pretty interesting to me. 4-year vertical of Mad Elf. Look at the colors: That's from 2009 through this year, the color fades directly with age. You could graph that and it would be perfectly linear. Taste pretty much follows directly. The 2009, there's nothing in there but the honey, both in the nose and the taste. No cherry's left, no hop, very little malt, just...honey. It's like a mead except it's not cloying and awful. Also, it's the Happy Happy Joy Joy song: Also: regarding the whole Westvleteren think, I really thing the 8 is a better dubbel than the 12 is a quad. Again, I'm not saying that the 12 isn't a world-class, top-notch beer, but the 8 is *perfect*. I really, really want to try the 6 some day. I think I liked liked Humidor better, but I could see myself drinking this every summer day for the rest of my life.

There's nothing Christmas about this it has a sharp caramel and vegetable mid-taste. I'm glad I only bought a single. Arnold of Soissons posted:That's the story I've heard from a number of places, including Brew Like A Monk. The brewers at Bernardus say the same thing, though obviously their information about what is happening at Westvleteren is less perfect than their information about what they're doing in house. Personally I think they're both very fine, but I think Rochefort 10 clearly is the best of class. I agree Rochefort 10 is my favorite, at least between ABT 12 and Rochefort 10. I think it's fantastic.

Midorka posted:Not that many people know of River Horse, nor would most people here consider drinking their beers if they came to their area, but I have to say avoid any Belgian beer they make. I'm guessing they have no idea how fermentation temps work, or have no temperature control and always ferment too high, but all of their Belgian beers are loving banana liquor tasting bombs. Absolutely gross, I drain poured their Tripel last night and did the same with their Belgian Freeze a week ago. Arnold of Soissons posted:that's odd, as I recall the Freeze was the only thing they made that I thought was decent enough to have a second time. My best friends live in Lambertville/New Hope, so this discussion is somewhat relevant to my interests, given that I'm out drinking there at least 1 weekend of every month. River Horse - Agreed that their tasting room is small and cramped as hell but I give them credit for the fact that it is consistently still to overflowing. Also their tasting pours are like 2 oz for $1, not sure where you got the whole 'regular bar price pours' thing from. I have the same banana issue as Midorka does with their Tripel, and everyone thinks I'm crazy for it. Go figure. I'm actually going to be at their stout release party this coming Saturday, because what the hell, it's cheap and they throw good parties. But of course it's not that awesome to visit normally, it's a working (and highly overtaxed) brewery with a tiny tasting room so people don't walk away disappointed. (also they probably can't sell bottles for cheaper than market price because of distributor laws or something, I remember they couldn't start selling bottles of their new release till after their distributors had it in NJ) Triumph - I wish I liked their beers a bit more than I did. When I started drinking beer I thought this place was the poo poo and was getting a growler of whatever at every opportunity. Lately I've cooled off a bit towards them, but the main advantage of that place is that they have enough variety in their beer that I can generally find something I like. Overall this place is a great choice for food and trying lots of good beer, if you're in the New Hope area check it out. about New Hope/Lambertville, holy crap.

But yeah, people do turn up for it. I would be proud of the crowds they pull in if I were them. A buck for a tasting glass is a totally fair price. I remember the prices being something like $5 per beer or $6 for a tasting flight of 4 beers. If full beers are $5ish then I still think that's a bit rich. My gripe with the tasting thing wasn't the price, it was that it didn't include anything but their standard year-rounds and those aren't very good. Just for the record, I think I bought at least one pack of every River Horse I ever saw on the shelves, just because they were local.

Overall this place is a great choice for food and trying lots of good beer, if you're in the New Hope area check it out. What I liked about Triumph's Princeton location is that it's a nice safe area, and the brewpub itself is very clean and modern feeling, it definitely feels like the kind of place you're going to spend at least $45 for two people, not including tip. I though it was awesome they had 8 4 ounce pours for something like $8? I can't remember but I tried every beer they had on tap as a sampler and thought, "wow that's not bad at all." Maybe it was $12, I'm not sure. The thing I didn't like though is that we got stuck in a room where the loving Yankees were playing and all the loving rich yuppies there, drinking the honey wheat beer nonetheless, were cheering for the loving Yankees. I mean come on does it ever get old cheering for those fuckers? Iron Hill Maple Shade has the absolute best sweet potato fries in this world though and the vanilla bourbon sauce they give you, along with a buffalo and habanero, is like candy. I could eat those til I die.

Went to a sampling last night at a local liquor store that was done by the owner (or one of the owners) of Central Waters. He brought Y2K Barleywine (never actually had it before, last year I only saw it once, whereas the Bourbon Barrel one was in abundance which I thought was kinda odd), the newest batch of the Bourbon Barrel Stout (it's now aged for a full year instead of six months), and a growler of 1414. Drank one of the '12 BB Stouts last night and enjoyed it more than the 2011 I drank the other night.
