The super dry ashy character did not go well with the tart wine barrel character. Had this in Vegas and even after everything we drank at Aces and Ales, I couldn't finish it. Of course, maybe because we drank some amazing stuff at ANA first, but yeah... Not good.

It really grinds my gears reading this kind of stuff (which I've seen multiple times). It's a total rear end in a top hat decision to make 400 people stand in line for 150 packs. I don't get what the point is other than pissing people off. The only reason to even have a "sell by" time is to give more people a chance to buy. They should have handed out tickets and the second they had 150 people in the line they should have sold off the bricks.

On a whim I picked up a mixed sixpack of various not-quite-craft winter seasonals. The Shock Top "End Of The World Midnight Wheat" is actually pretty decent. I've got the Blue Moon Full Moon Winter Ale and Winter Abbey and the Guinness Generous Ale to try out tomorrow.

In other news, today in Bend I skied my rear end off in the morning, biked my rear end off in the afternoon, and now I'm at the 10 Barrel drinking my rear end off of what they call the "Rye'm or Treason," a barleywine which goes down far too smooth for what they call 10.3%. 10 Barrel is to some extent the most intensely experimental brewery in a city that's full of very experimental breweries, and I may have to stow a bottle or two of this for the future. In other other news, Boneyard Suge Knight just dropped all over town but forget it, I'm too drunk off 10 Barrel already (which is thankfully walkin' distance from home).

How are you guys drinking your Westvleteren 12? I chilled mine for about 20 min in the fridge after sitting in my room for the whole day, and it's not too shabby. What do you guys (for those lucky enough to score one I guess) think of the beer? There has been a lot of talk about getting it, but no one is talking about drinking it.

Popped my last Dark Hollow after splitting one with a friend a few weeks ago and noticing it was continuing to go south. No surprise, another harrowing experience. I would suspect myself of just having some odd taste aversion or being unlucky with bottles, but my bottle of Mandolin that I'd kept around started tasting worse for wear at Thanksgiving, too. This sucks. I love supporting local breweries, but Blue Mountain Barrel House is torpedoing me so hard I don't think I'll ever buy a bottle again. Between this poo poo and their mediocre ESB going for $10 I'm just done.

Yeah guys, stop talking about one of the best beers in the world being released Stateside for what might be the only time. Anyone tried a Dead Guy? WOW! Actually, I did want to ask if anyone else has been having trouble finding Brown Shugga? It was in every store around Thanksgiving but already has vanished from most. It's arguably the best Lagunitas seasonal, but I usually don't have problems like this finding them. Lagunitas seasonals are my go-to 6-packs. Very reliably good.

The only reason I got to try some again was because I went to New Jersey to see family for Thanksgiving. Speaking of Hopslam, I drank a pint of Boneyard Hopvenom tonight, which is like Hopslam but better and doesn't require you to wait until some special time of year.

I drank Westy 12 tonight. It was probably the best beer I've ever had, although I still haven't had an Abt 12 to compare it to. It was so unbelievably complex, I feel like every 5 minutes I was getting different flavors. There was a period of about 20 minutes where I didn't like it that much because it was very cherry forward, but I could see how many people could appreciate that. It didn't taste like the ABV it had at all, I truly understand the hype. I also had a 3 Frogs IPA from Elevator Brewing Co tonight, and it was one of the worst beers I've had in a while. I'm probably being too critical of it, but it was far too malty. I tend to enjoy IPAs that are hop forward, but if they are malt forward I just really can't enjoy them. P.S. I wish there were a bunch of VT goons who wanted to trade all the time, I think I'm going to have to trade on reddit or ratebeer or something E: I'm also just kind of curious... how much does it cost in CA for a bottle of 12 year Elijah Craig Eclipse? They seem to be available online for $27, but I have a feeling that might be a bit taxed. Kudosx fucked around with this message at 10:59 on Dec 14, 2012 |

So I decided to try Samuel Smith's Nut Brown Ale(only drank occasionally, 'cheap' beers) after reading some of the positive reviews. Is it because I am unaccustomed to drinking beers? I really can't smell or taste the caramel, coffee, nuttiness in the beer.

Depending on the state/municipality, a lot of places have regulations on when alcohol can be sold - no booze sales before noon, none on a Sunday, whatever. It varies a lot. So that's part of it, waiting until it's legal to sell the beer. As to letting more than 150 people get into the waiting line, I agree it's kind of a dick move. It makes a degree of business sense, though, since even people who don't get a Westy brick may buy something else to drown their disappointment. I didn't exactly leave Total Wine empty handed when I got in too late to buy any of their Abyss.

Around my neck of the woods, Mad Elf, the last few years has been EVERYWHERE. Literally skids of it at local distributors. I don't know if Troegs kept production the same and sent it to more areas, or if all of a sudden it got really popular. I found a case last night, and it was actually the first case I've seen of it anywhere. I am seeing the gift sets everywhere(Mad Elf glass and a 22ozer) however. It's weird.
