I loving love wagons. I loving love this thread. Some of the wagons I have owned/now own:

1996 Buick Roadmaster with LT1...awesome wagon, the quintessential wagon

2004 Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback...kinda rare but I moved 3 bicycles with it before and it's helped me move across state lines multiple times

1989 SAAB 900...I'm going to count this even though it's technically a hatchback. Ever see one in person? It's pretty much a wagon with a sloped 5th door. Sweet/Swede.

1980 Subaru 1600 DL AWD...very cool wagon, pristine interior and only 116K on the clock. Fixed it up and sold it to a local enthusiast for a song. Would've kept it for a DD, but I'm 6' 3".

1983 Nissan Stanza wagon. Super cool wagon with carb issues. The upholstery looked like it was made of pillow cases.

I don't think I can count my 1981 Toyota Celica Supra hatch, though. :(

Right now, I have a 1990 Toyota Camry wagon. Why? Because my wife is driving our 2013 Subaru Outback in cypress green (love that wagon). I've done a shitton of work on the Camry wagon (not an AllTrac, sorry), fixing body work and digging those La-Z-Boy bucket seats while getting a sweet, sweet 35 MPG as of last fill up. I will post pictures upon request. :haw:

I don't know about the rest of you, but my wagon memories go waaaaay back to when my parents owned a late 80s Ford Escort wagon and I, as a kid, loved having to go in the back part, playing with toys and generally taking naps while everyone else fought for elbow room up front.

Well... It still drove kinda. It's awesome driving 80 miles home on the highway with hosed up brakes, slipping clutch, two bad wheel bearings, hosed up injector, skipped timing belt, leaking head gasket, etc

Got to post in here seeing as I have 2 wagons. 96 855 and an 81 245 that I'm currently working a v8 into, if I ever get a chance to actually do work on it. I loving love wagons. I work at a swedish car shop where I get to play with wagons all day long. Its awesome. I got to test drive a V50 T5 awd with the 6 speed a couple of days ago and spent the rest of the day with a stupid grin slapped across my face. Because it was a wagon made it better than an S40 T5 awd. It just did. Same damed car but the V50 is better, because wagons are just better. Once I'm done with the 285 project I'm looking for a Amazon wagon because its just something I have got to have.

It wouldn't go over 60 because the clutch was slipping so bad. So yea, I cruised in the slow lane keeping plenty of following distance. I had to plan a really convoluted route through my town to avoid any potential hill stops.

I also forgot to mention that the slave cylinder was failing. My garage smelled like well roasted clutch for days.

The 156 Sportswagon (not a REAL wagon) isn't rare at all were I live. They're also pretty much shitboxes for a lot of reasons. Primarily lousy Italian QA. They're also pretty slow. The only non-lovely 156 Sportswagon was the GTA 3.5 Autodelta, but good luck finding that. That's the only really rare 156 wagon.

I did test a few used 2002-2005 156 wagons a couple of years ago while shopping for a reliable daily drive to haul poo poo and family. The 159 is a way better car by miles.

Best performance and reliability for the buck for used European wagons is hands down the 2002-2004 Peugeot 406 3.0 TS6. They're also a bit rare and non-existing in the US. I got real lucky with mine. Hauls poo poo and family at 140Mph with no issues.
I also think they're much better looking than the Alfa 156, but that's of cause subjective.

Here it is besides Kozmonauts 406 2.2 TS4 Sedan:

Chilling in its cave:

I really think it's one of the better looking European wagon fronts:

Only real downside is engine-wrenching. There's really no room in there. Took me a solid 3 hours to change coils:

If you want a 156, go for the pre-facelift version. The Twinspark engine may be slightly down on power compared to the later direct-injection JTS engine, but it also doesn't have crippling lubrication faults and it's a proper Alfa engine, not a worked-over Fiat unit. Common for both engines is that they burn oil by design, you literally have to check the oil on every other fillup, no joke. They've got under-piston oil sprayers and all kind of fancy stuff for added cooling, which really gets going under high revs.

The Twinspark takes ordinary 10w40 as far as I can remember, which isn't too bad. The JTS needs 10w60, which gets hella expensive hella fast.

Rust is also a big issue, especially due to water accumulation under the carpets. It can go completely unnoticed for years until you peel them back and discover the rot. A 156 is a very beautiful car and by all accounts amazing to drive, but it will be an expensive high-maintenance relationship, the facelifted version even more so.

This is all straight from an Alfista acquaintance of mine, he's had 3 of them so far and he's got an old Giulia Sprint 1300 that he's restored himself, so his credentials should be in order. He also says that the 159 is not a "proper Alfa" because it's on a GM platform with Opel/GM engines and way too reliable.

I actually own a said Direct Injection, a 2006 JTS 156 in Ti trimmings. Mine is a sedan, which looks great after eight years (rolled out of the factory back in '04) and still even gets a few admiring glances and the occasional creepy wink from guys in expensive clothes.

Now, I agree with most of the things you said, and they do also apply to the wagon/sportback which is why I'm going to reiterate and give my personal opinion.

Pre-facelift cars are fantastic, they look timeless (although I do prefer the Brera-esque nose of the facelift models) and in V6 flavour they make excellent tourers but compared to a twinspark handeling is compromised as they are heavy at the nose. Pre-facelifters are knocking on a bit though, and my eighteen-year-old, university-student, low socioeconomic self cannot sustain the needs of an old Italian sportscar, hence the reason why I shelled out a little extra cash for a newer model.

Power is good. The 2.0L provides ample 'get-up-and-go' for dynamic daily driving, to the point that I actually look forward to getting behind the wheel. But to say it is not a proper Alfa engine is a bit off. For a start it makes the most exquisite noise for a 2litre four, I have never heard anything like it. It give torque low down and lotsa power up high in the rev-range. An absolutely cracking engine even if it has Fiat origins, the boys at Alfa worked wonders with it. And also the fact that cars built after 2003/04 have Bosch electrics means I can sleep at night.

As for oil burn. Ohhhhh loarrd! I've used more oil than BP lost in the Gulf of Mexico spill. Well, its not quite that bad, but I do have my head under the bonnet every 700km when the tank runs dry and its time for a fillup. I believe, Alfa 'recommend' running it on 10w50 or 5w50, but going up to 10w60 (as I have done) does mean you get a little longer life out of the oil and it doesn't burn quite as much. I'm not sure what the expense is, as there is no tangible change in power output, so I guess thats a top tip for Alfa newbies!

Rust is not an issue for me, personally, but I will acknowledge it. I live in the wonderfully arid state of Western Australia so body/chassis rust is very uncommon. I'm sure as long as the car is kept garaged and washed every other-weekend to keep salt deposits at bay for our friends to the South (or North for you Northern-Hemisphere dwellers) rust could be kept on top of.

As a warning, it is surprisingly MORE expensive to own and run an Alfa than it is to run a Camry ;) Over the course of this year, my car owes me less than $2000 in repairs and thats with a 100,000 km major service and belt replacement. Not bad going for the true ultimate driving machine.

Hey man, if wagons need their own goddamn thread, we'll take anything we can get. As long as it's got a window behind the C-pillar, a back end that's contiguous with the passenger compartment, and the rear window is steeper than less than a 45 degree angle from vertical, it's good. :v: Just as long as it isn't too much of an SUV - I could handle a Venza or current-gen Outback in this thread, or even a Forester, but not, say, a Ford Edge, or a Flex.

Wagons don't have forward-facing third row seats though, so the Flex is out, but I'm on the fence about the Forester - the first gen was most certainly a wagon, so if anything it's simply a historical classification without any bearing on what it currently is. Which means the current one is an SUV.
