I caught a few minutes of Alex's show today. He totally lost it at one point and just started yelling/weeping "THE GLOBALISTS! AHHHH!" It reminded me a lot of Glen Beck at his most pathetic. I also heard something about "frequency pollution" which is caused by phones and microwaves and is giving everyone cancer. Also the new world order is almost here, so get ready for that (buy INFOWARS survivalist gear!).

I get some really creepy messiah complex vibes from him too. It's like listening to him is supposed to prepare you for the brave new world, which conveniently never comes. Either he's Christ in his own mind, or just another huckster, I don't know which is worse.

Even if you're purely a huckster, I'm not sure you could say things like that hours and hours a day with emotion and not start to believe it on some level. If Daniel Day Lewis stayed in character for 20 years, he'd probably think he was Lincoln. Alex Jones is definitely believing he's Alex Jones too.

Honestly I bet a lot of especially right wing huckster types, a la Michael Savage, started off just trying to fleece wingers. How far they've fallen into becoming their characters is really between them and god.

The fact that Taranteno mocks and criticizes racism in his films of course completely lost on conservatives as usual.

On that note, the climax action scene's moneyshot got a standing ovation for the midnight screening of inglorious basterds I went to during its opening. I clapped so hard my hands were sore. I won't spoil it but those who have seen it know the great moment of what-if-ism that the movie delivers on. ;)

That movie's climax made it the feel good movie of the year for me.

That's kind of interesting, you're watching a film where people are watching a film of war porn and applauding and cheering the violence, showing the horror of propaganda, then violence porn breaks out and you, the real audience start applauding it.

The movie mocks the audience (who I saw laughing when the Basterds brutally beat a German soldier to death with a baseball bat) by showing various Nazis from some bootlicker to Hitler himself laughing at the propaganda movie with Americans getting shot left and right later in the movie.

Of course, I'll defend the main climax because who doesn't want to see Hitler shot in the head by two Jewish guys

The latest Tarantino movie Man with the Iron Fists blowed in my opinion but I remember seeing this thread and wondering if the 'friend of the family friend of the family friend of the family' drudge image refers to the scene where the black smith is being beaten by the plantation white men? . Would a conservative have scoffed at that scene. It's funny I can almost predict exactly what they would think about that scene. 'That was 150 years ago! Who cares! Things are different now! How come the liberal media doesn't show todays racism with the black man kicking the white man when hes down!!'. Blacks are the real racists of today, hating whitey for something he didn't do!'

A young son of a conservative I'd meet in class would quietly tell me racism works both ways as if that justifies anything that happens to black people today because of injustices created by the conservative mindset.

I lie awake, staring out at the bleakness of Megadon.
The thing is, the film is trying to point out something that the Germans learned a long time ago: fascism is a thing that's part of human nature. The leftists in the student revolution wanted to goad the state into proving that it was still run by fascists by provoking them to violence. They killed each other and committed acts of terrorism.

Think about the climax of the movie. It ends with the "good guys" beating a dead Hitler while they wait for their own deaths. One of the heroes destroys a huge collection of historically significant films to get revenge, and dies in the process of doing so. The end of the climax is a dead person laughing as both sides die, with the "good" guys murdering a bunch of unarmed Nazis who came to watch a film, and then committing suicide. Not only a suicide, but a suicide bombing.

Then, in the end, the last two Basterds who are still alive carve a swastika in the Nazi field-marshal's head so that he can never, ever not be a Nazi. No redemption, no second chances. He's marked as a Nazi for the rest of his life. He was a horrible person, sure. But he's marked as being utterly irredeemable. Meanwhile, the supposedly virtuous good guys murder the radio officer that was accompanying him for no reason, after promising not to, simply because Aldo knows that he won't get into any real trouble for it.

They're really not portrayed as being heroic in any way. But, you know, Nazis.

I'd like to throw out the fact that is not just the "Right Wing Media" which is poisoning this country with lies and propaganda, but the regular media as well. Either they're owned by Newscorp, or they are responding in fear to Fox News. Witness the decline of CNN into a "Fox-Lite". Witness the guest list of every Sunday show every Sunday. Consider the Opinion page of the Washington Post. On and on.

They've all been so terrified of being tarred "Liberal Media" they go out of their way to defer to any and all Republicans.

The only counter example is MSNBC, who only recently decided to counter market to a unabashed "Liberal" viewpoint, but for only a few hours every day.

And then I read Murdoch is gonna buy the LA Times and the Chicago Tribune. Awesome - that's exactly what the country needs.

Except it sounds what you're saying is that the "regular media" has become more right wing in response to FOX domination of the ratings. I agree with your conclusion and get what you're saying, but really it's just one more example of how pervasive and successful the right wing "anti liberal/unbaised" approach has been for them in framing the narrative and moving the Overton Window.

The "regular media" has shifted right, but that doesn't stop FOX, Rush and all the others from claiming they're just as liberally biased as they've always been. The extreme right is simply totalitarian.

It's okay to enjoy it for the revenge fantasy bit, seeing people you view as the bad guys get their comeuppance is something pretty old to the human condition. The important thing is to not take such a story at face value and let it colour your perception of the world. I.e. torturing people in Gitmo. That they did it on 24 doesn't mean it's good or that it works in real life.

I never understood this point, because how could Bush have possibly planned such a thing in only a year. The only way that makes sense is if Clinton planned it and Bush got it and somehow decided to just go with it instead of exposing it and, you know, discrediting Democrats forever and ever.

I think more simple, corrective viciousness from the left aimed at these clowns could be effective (and 100% warranted), ironic calls for terrorist attacks notwithstanding. Factual refutations require far too much effort and miss the point of the type of rhetoric they engage in. There's very little else to be done with people whose entire political world view is framed as a media empire of manufactured outrage, racist resentment, insularity etc. It's certainly preferable to having their perspectives entertained as part of the mainstream discourse.
