Yeah, we could do 4d10 instead but fuckit. That'd also weigh things far too heavily towards the mode. 1d50 based on a d100 roll might actually work quite well. Actually, I think I'm going to do that!

So I had a question regarding wielding two weapons in Deathwatch. How does Swift Attack and Lightning Attack work in regards to wielding two weapons? Can you Swift/Lightning Attack on both, or is there some restriction against that? And if so, what pages talk about this?

I'm not sure about Deathwatch, but in DH and RT you can do two or three attacks with your main hand (per the applicable talent) and one with your off-hand.

They changed it in Black Crusade and onwards. Swift and Lightning Attack now work like Semi-Auto and Full-auto fire for melee weapons.

Turns my Rogue Trader into an absolute blender with his power swords. I sliced a Rak'Gol to ribbons in one desperate aggressive-stance Lightning attack. (we've constantly updated our RT game to use the latest rule mechanics)

My GM is considering using BC rules, so I really should revise my question to ask how does it work in DW and how does it work in BC.

In black crusade, is crushing blow (the one that gives you +1/2 WS bonus damage) already figured into the enemy's weapon stats in the adversaries chapter?

Its annoying me because it seems like they sometimes add talents that give passive bonuses in and then sometimes they don't. Still better then WFRP 2ed or early Dark Heresy books in that respect.

Edit: A related question about the nether swarm. Does it get a +20 to dodge AND a -20 to hit it from its size? Or were they reflecting its small size with he +20 dodge bonus? How to swarms work anyway? Does it not get the size bonus (since its wounds seem to reflect a swarm of them)? Hordes can't dodge, it seems sort of inconsistent for swarms to dodge as well. Do they attack like hordes, in the sense that a horde can strike anyone in melee, or do they attack like regular NPCs (which makes the nether swarm basically a big bag of hp that probably won't hurt you)?

I had this idea to run Only War with the players as penal legionnaires. Theme would be that there are enemies who want them dead and their allies aren't too eager to see them survive either. They would be given suicide missions and mainly perform as small teams behind enemy lines, with the occasional grand battle where their personal goal is to just survive.

Is this viable?

Ashcans

Let's do the space-time warp again!

I think its possible, but I also think that you need to be careful not to make it frustrating for the players, because it seems like its inevitable they are going to die a lot. If I was going to run a Penal Legion game, I would do it one of two ways:

1) Model it after the 'Last Chancers', where each player basically takes an archetypical character role ('Heavy', 'Demolitions Guy', etc.) whenever their character is killed, their unit just gets assigned a new person to fill that role that the player takes over. So mechanically, they play their character until they die, where they are replaced by another, very similar character minus some earned attributes. This sort of keeps things rolling.

2) Style if after Paranoia or something similar - basically, they are assigned ludicrous, incomprehensible, or impossible missions because their superiors don't give a poo poo and want them dead. But there is a catch! The last surviving member of their squad will be officially pardoned and transferred to non-combat duty. But if more than one survives, they'll just be sent out on another mission until there is only one (or no) survivor. So the players have not only have to wrangle their missions, but will be trying to set each other up to get killed along the way. I think a big helping of humor is necessary in designing and implementing this.

Absolutely! The only aspects I can think of off-hand that you'd have to change are Logistics and the available Specialties. Because it would be even more difficult for them to requisition new equipment than a normal squad, you could assign the squad a Logistics value of zero to begin with (normal is 10). You could also just bar them from requisitioning things, but then it would be extremely difficult and extremely random for them to acquire new equipment legitimately. They'd be far more likely to end up with duffel after duffel of dirty laundry.

For the specialties, you might want to disallow a couple for equipment/fluff reasons. The 5 squad specialists would be fine (Weapon Specialist, Heavy Gunner, Sergeant, Medic, and Operator), but you'd have to pick and choose with the support specialists (Ratling, Ogryn, Commissar, Storm Trooper, Missionary, Techpriest, Psyker). I'm specifically thinking of the Storm Trooper: his specialist equipment includes carapace armor and a hellgun, and to the best of my knowledge renegade Storm Troopers are vanishingly rare and wouldn't be stuck in a penal legion if they did rebel. Taking away specialist equipment can really hamstring a character (especially if it's hard to requisition new equipment). Ditto with the Psyker: a psyker who committed an offense would almost certainly just be executed. It's all up to you, clearly.

For Regiment design, I'd probably go with Light Infantry with a Penal Colony home world. Are you envisioning them as a penal unit within a normal regiment, or as members of a penal regiment?

Thanks for the tips. I don't own the book yet so I'm still doing very preliminary planning. I was envisioning the first mission has them inflitrating a city in preparation for a full scale assault. They have to destroy bridges, eliminate officers or some other disruption to keep the enemy forces distracted and in place for a certain amount of time. When the timer runs out, the assault begins... with an artillery barrage, and the players must find cover and survive friendly fire.

Does the book offer many different enemies? I still haven't decided if the opposition is traitors, orks or 'nids.

Not too too many. The core book is mostly focused on the Spinward Front, and as such only has entries on Chaos, Dark Eldar, and Ork enemies. It's fully compatible with the other 40K RPGs, though (They actually have a couple page section on using Only War stuff in DH/BC/DW/etc and vice versa) so you can always just pull Tyranid enemies out of a Dark Heresy book and use that.

Fizziocrat
Mar 15, 2004

The book includes traitor Guard, Chaos, Orks, and Dark Eldar, all including vehicles. The primary storyline of the Spinward Front is of overwhelmed Imperial forces frantically defending against a major Ork Waaagh!, secessionist scum, and the Dark Eldar slavers formerly allied with the secessionist scum (Chaos just sort of cram themselves in wherever). :ssh:The Imperials are only overwhelmed because tons of forces that are supposedly being sent to the Front are being secretly diverted to the Jericho Reach.

Psykers are a support class, along with Commissars, Storm Troopers, and other such professions. I haven't looked too much at how Only War does Psyker stuff, but I'm sure there's more than enough in the book for all your Perils-related needs without having to go through DH supplements.

I don't have one in my current squad, but from what I can tell they've been vastly toned down since Dark Heresy. There's no more Seal Wounds, so the Medic isn't rendered superfluous (also, Medicae has been cranked up to 11, so it's actually useful for the first time ever). Biomancy is mainly focused towards direct damage, or modifying the Psyker so he can inflict more damage. Divination is geared towards party enhancement (I feel like this really fits into OW, as several classes have mechanics to buff allies). Pyromancy is almost all direct damage, and deals a lot with the Flame quality (which is still a bit overly powerful). Telekinesis is a grab bag, with direct damage, various status effects (like Snare and Haywire), teleportation, and area effect damage. Telepathy is primarily Fear and domination effects, with the only party buffs being Invisibility and granting Fearlessness.

It still seems like there are definitely some power choices that make the Psyker a one-man killing machine, but they seem to be divided among a couple of different disciplines this time. It's stupid that they have more wounds than a proper Guardsman class (Operator), though.

e: On this same note, is there any reason that the Operator should have fewer wounds than the other Guardsmen? It seems ridiculous that the Ratling, which is roughly the size of a child and has the constitution of a soggy paper bag, should have just one wound less than a standard Guardsman who happens to drive vehicles rather than patch up wounded guys or blast xenos in the face.

Clearly if you sit on your arse in a tank all day, you do not get the constitution of a proper guardsman who MARCHES WITH NO SHOES AND BROKEN BLISTERS INSTEAD OF BONES ALL DAY. Now stop asking sensible questions in the Imperium, drat it :commissar:

Also, most poo poo that will wreck a Rhino, Leman Russ, or Baneblade happen the same things that will kill their occupants as well, so it's more a benefit really. It's the Emperor's mercy that you won't survive the tank getting scragged and having to be burned alive trapped inside it, like those with higher constitutions would face.
