That's not true. Every single Judge Dredd cross-over is 'canon' to Judge Dredd. Those things actually happened and those Batman crossovers had some reasonably major plot points for Dredd's universe in them.

"Die Laughing" kills off Deputy Chief Judge Herriman, and the whereabouts of the Dark Judges at various points in Dredd's series were directly affected by what happens there (there's some later Dredd story where he refers obliquely to that weird guy from Gotham).

Sure. The climax of the first crossover; Judgement on Gotham is what sets up the following stories featuring Judge Death and the idea of having Judge Anderson imprison his spirit inside herself is where that originates. In later stories, Dredd recalls his trip to Gotham and the 'Gotham clown' he fought there.

Die Laughing, the fourth crossover they had, is what caused Anderson to come out of retirement and killed off a prominent character or two.

Similarly, crossover storylines with Dark Horse and the Alien and Predator properties had several characters die during the events, which are still referenced and have had follow-up mentions and events happen because of them, including the creation of characters who are still around today.

Well, I gave up on the Batman/Dredd crossovers before Die Laughing so I'll concede that and I stopped buying 2000AD in the late 90s so I would have missed the shout back if it was after that.

You're wrong about Judgement on Gotham, though. JOG postdates Necropolis, in which Anderson had already held the spirits of Judge Mortis and Judge Fire in that manner, and when she traps Death in JOG she references the event.

I've just read Case Files 3 and that's literally how the very first Judge Death story is resolved.

No, it's not. In that story, Death possesses Anderson and she is trapped in her own body. In Necropolis and JOG it's the reverse.

This is the best action flick i've seen so far this year. It was interesting reading the beginning of this thread and seeing how many people were ready to just give the film a pass, and then they were totally wrong.

The Batman/Dredd crossover "The Ultimate Riddle" is pretty loving awesome. Batman, Dredd and a slew of other characters are drawn into a combat zone for the viewing pleasure of some galactic god. They reluctantly team up and kick rear end!

Although the title itself kind of gives away the twist. It was all the Riddler using some space-wand he just happened to find to try and best Batman.

This was an awesome film and I'm pretty gutted that it made ~$31m worldwide in box office, when you get pure poo poo like Jack and Jill making ~$150m. Guess we're not going to see a sequel :smith:

Massive kudos to Karl Urban for having no ego at all and respecting the source material completely.

They would have to be knockout in all territories. This doesn't seem likely; the internet has effectively killed the concept of the slow burning cult movie that is only discovered later (e.g. Blade Runner). Dredd might do better than most because there'll be people put off by lack of 2D screenings, but I don't believe it can sell enough.

Some people saw a lot of symbolism in the American flag displayed in the classroom where they interrogate Kay. The flag isn't prominently displayed during the torture sequence itself. We only catch glimpses of it just before and after.

Because word of mouth is faster and much more prevalent. There's a billion and six blogs and sites telling you about everything, and even if you don't read them you almost certainly have a friend who does and will pass news on to you.

I don't know how I managed to miss that the central act in their pursuit of knowledge takes place in a classroom. If anything, that only makes more sense. The flag isn't just there as decoration/indirect commentary, it's institutional branding: the same system that teaches, tortures, and the same regulatory control Anderson the Cop demonstrates in that scene exerts its first influence in the classroom. It's a safe place for them for a reason.

EDIT: VVVVVV I'm tellin' ya, Foucault woulda loved this poo poo.

I haven't read the comic, and i'm hoping someone who has know's the backstory to this one scene if there is any; When Anderson is describing Dredd to the Chief Judge, she is interrupted before she gets a chance to describe him further. What is it about Dredd that Anderson sensed?

I read the comic for many years, and I have no idea.

It's not a reference to something. I forget the exact line but it was something like "I sense anger, and control, and something else..." The Chief Judge cuts Anderson off because we don't need to know any more about Dredd.

Or maybe he was thinking about his robot butler, or how his boots are too small.

Yeah. It's almost like the writer is saying, though the Chief, that if you expect some in-depth look into Dredd's psyche then you're in the wrong movie, because that's not considered important compared to his portrayal as an extension of the law.

Ahahah! I remember the robot butler. And the thing about Dredd's boots being too small. :D

The Dredd movie did such a great job of capturing the essence of the original comics and was really a handsome-looking film. It's such a shame it didn't do well in theaters. I hope the film coming out on DVD/Blu-Ray will increase the chance for some type of sequel.
