So I'm in the final chapter, and so far I think the Haruka section was my favorite. However, I have yet to go back and fully complete all of the sidequests/play mahjong for a few hours and so on. I did not like Shinada as much, unfortunately.

Does anybody have Tanimura's fight style? I think that was my favorite from 4. Adding on Heat moves at the end of combos felt so drat good. Putting the War God Amulet on him for his final fight = so many arms broken. I'm hoping they gave Kiryu or Saejima a couple of those moves.

Also nthing the disappointment that everyone seems to just use their phones for revelations now. Seeing Saejima text is weird.

One thing that annoyed me back in 4 is how little time Saejima spent examining the things that had changed in the 25 years he had been away. He did it a little when he first got out ("they have HOST clubs now? Women sure have changed..."), but I guess now he got all that stuff out of the way between 4 and 5 and is now completely up to date?

Not exactly...

Saejima has the ability to spin people around and toss them far away. Akiyama has the ability to combo somebody in air. Shinada is probably the closest in that after his combo, you can keep going and push a dude into a wall and then use a finishing heat blow.

Just finished the plot. I personally really did not like the ending, but it'll be interesting to see what others say.

Better yet, are there Millenium Tower equivalents in the other locations that also blow up? Preferably all at the same time?

About to finish my first run through of Dead Souls. I kept saying "just one more chapter" and then it was 5 in the morning. Haven't done that with a single player game in awhile. Just have to finish the finale then I can start Dead Souls Mode and get that 10mil Yen to do all the side stuff afterwards.

There's digest videos you can watch which summarize the previous games. They're the next best thing to actually playing the games. You might miss out on the characterization between some bit level characters, like you might not know who this one NPC for one quest is because he was in Yakuza 2 and he's been in every game since, but you'll know all the major information.

The only thing is, digesting these will take a while and because you don't spend 3 games with the characters you might not remember names as easily.

It does mean that if you jump into these videos, you're gonna need to spend... at least a hour watching them before starting the game proper (which will probably open with a 10+ minute cutscene)

Nah, just jump in. Everyone's backstory is basically "Kiryu kicked my rear end and I learned a lesson." Watch the vids if you really want to know the story/get the trophy, but you're not really missing much since the other three guys are brand new.

So I just started Dead Souls difficulty in DS...This is gonna be something :stare:

I started out with 3 and believe me, watching the recap videos is well worth the time.

Personally, Jamesman's LP of the first game, ridiculous English dub and all, was what got me into the series. I went out and picked up 3 and watched its recap videos of 1 and 2. The problem is that 2 is considered to have the best story in the series...so you could wait for the HD collection if you're feeling crazy patient.

My friend and I sat down and watched all of the recap videos prior to starting 4. We couldn't stop laughing at how eager the characters in the game were to rip of their shirts and throw down. And that poor Millenium Tower just can't catch a break it seems :(

I've played up to Act 3 of Akiyama's story (only a couple of hours in) and I'm liking the game a lot. The story's a bit slow at the moment but I'm sure it'll HEAT up soon enough - I'm particularly enjoying the interactions between Akiyama and his hambeast secretary :v:. I still can't get over at how much detail was included in Kamurocho - I spent ten minutes winning a giant and regular-sized Piyo doll at the arcade, chowed down at a Matsuya, wandered around the rooftops collecting locker keys...the completionist in me is going to go nuts running around trying to 100% this game.

2 also has some of the most intense action sequences ever.

It's still a toss-up if we might get the HD collection or not. If it does, I'll take it as a good sign for Yakuza 5.

Releasing Yakuza 1 and 2 HD in the US borders on free money. I'm not sure why they wouldn't do it, but... Sega and all that.

I think if it were going to happen, they'd have already announced it. Unless they're re-translating both games, which seems even more unlikely.

:(

Then again, if we get 5 and if it somehow manages to sell well, maybe then we'll get it.

Actually, I suspect that if they re-released it they would have to re-acquire all the voice licenses for the first one.

Tip: don't collect too many locker keys as Akiyama. The next dude you play has a much harder time making money, and if you grab all the easy powerups with Akiyama you'll have a tougher time with Saejima. (The characters don't share inventory until near the end of the game.)

Ask me how I learned this. :argh:

Saejima can make money just as easy as everyone else though, with the Casino or just selling weapons/materials because real men don't use them. Also the only thing you really need a lot of money for is the Hostess sidequest and they won't let Saejima in because he's a hobo.

Actually doesn't every American copy have the 12 or whatever free unlockable sets at the fortune telling house? Those all have really expensive crap in them, so last time I played I just opened 2 or 3 of those per character.

That's what I was talking about. Apparently all the DLC (not just the costumes) is unlocked with the same code. I thought the US version had the item packs on-disc, but I guess not. They're definitely overkill anyway, I didn't even use them my first time through (because I didn't ever go to the fortune lady's house).

Also I found this awesome trailer I'd never seen before (for Yakuza 4, maybe minorly :nws: )

4 had a code for some extra packs, but I think there were some freebies up on the PS Store for anyone to download, too. Dead Souls has 2 free packs. One is costumes, and the other is a bunch of good items you can get from a guy in the weapons truck.

Speaking of Dead Souls, I just got to the halfway point of Majima's section in my Dead Souls Mode run. Yeesh. Maybe don't throw so many zombies at me that you choke your engine and drop to 5 fps, game. I thought I might do a few substories for each character to gain some levels, but gently caress that. Even with a grenade launcher and shotgun I get swarmed too easily. The QTE timing is ridiculous, too, so Heat Sniping is a gamble. I'm just throwing the Yakuza Training Gear(gain more xp but aiming suffers a little) on everyone and running through to the end.

I just won 1500 chips in a Blackjack challenge. Which prize is worth more cash, the diamond or the gold plate?

And I found out that the Bust/Green Jewel/Black Jewel/etc... items are one-time use. Will I be able to get more of them later or are the lockers the only source of them?

IIRC Gold Plate is worth 100,000 and Diamonds 80,000...but I'm not 100% on the diamond worth. If they're the same amount of chips to buy, then they're probably equal in worth when selling. As for the gambling jewels, I think there are a couple of each in the lockers, but if not you can get them again on the next playthrough since the lockers reset.

The best things to get are the Banker's Piece and Player's Piece for Baccarat. Buy as many chips as you can (you can bet a max of 10,000), bet them all on Banker, use Banker Piece, then bet max on player and use that piece. Trade in chips for Platinum Plates. Quick couple of million Yen if you have 2000 or so chips (about 200,000 Y worth) to start.

I finally beat him - the L1+Triangle move and improved grab escape were the key.

With that out of the way, what do you mean by, "use Saejima's fighting style to your advantage"? Isn't his only gimmick being able to charge up and super-punch mid-combo? Unless you're taking about some kind of "punch twice, evade" routine?

I second the poster who said that you can't out-punch Kiryu though. Grabs are probably better. Remember how much trouble Kiryu has with the big grab-happy sumo guys? You are the big grab-happy sumo guy.
