My experience isn't so hot. My Walkabout bluray came with a scratch on it so that part of the film won't play. They said they would send a new one and after a few emails back and forth it never came. Maybe I will try again soon.

That's happened to me a couple of times. Just ask Jon if it was sent out yet and he'll probably respond with that it was sent out but probably got lost in the mail and will send another one.

I understand what they're going for with Badlands, but I don't think it's working as well as they seem to think.

Not that I really care, because it's loving Badlands on bluray.

So...when's the next sale?

Edit: Also why won't Criterion release City Lights? How does Verdoux compare to the rest of Chaplin's filmography?

Nice try, asshole

My take:

Ministry of Fear - Hmmm... not that wild about it, but it's a decent spy thriller. I might buy it, depends on the extras.

A Man Escaped - Yay!!! My favorite Bresson, DVD going up on eBay tonight.

Badlands - No brainer, even if it is my least favorite Malick. Awful cover.

Monsieur Verdoux - Ugh.

I guess we'll find out soon if there's going to be an Eclipse set, we're overdue for one.

Wow! What a month!
This is the third time now where ive purchased region-free titles overseas only for criterion to release it themselves down the road (A Man Escaped, Certified Copy, and The Double Life of Veronique). I need to stop doing that!

Only no-question purchase is Colonel Blimp. I'm curious about Badlands (The Tree of Life is one of my favorites, just liked Days of Heaven) and Ministry of Fear (Fritz Lang film based on Graham Greene - my interest is captured). Only Bresson I've seen is Pickpocket, which I really liked.

I really didn't like Monsieur Verdoux. In fact, I actually liked A King in New York and Limelight, which have a worse reputation. Hopefully it's not the only Chaplin release of the year like past years.

I wish they'd be faster with re-releasing prior DVD releases. I know they have to secure the rights again for Blu-Ray and all that but I don't think it should take as long.

They probably don't have the cash flow to release a lot more each month, but I have little doubt the market could bear them doubling the amount of releases per month. The people who buy every release can mostly afford to buy a few more each month and those who pick and choose would still buy the same ones. And especially when it comes to re-releases there are certainly people holding back purchasing older DVD-only releases in anticipation.

There's also the issue of other companies already having BD releases of older Criterions, which is why I fear we'll never have Criterion Blu versions of Le Grande Illusion (#1) or Passion of Joan of Arc.

Well they have to get the rights back to that one, first.

Favorabilis Solitud
May 18, 2006
And that's the way it was.
There are around 600 films on DVD and 200 on blu ray. Assuming they have the rights to a film, I don't see why you would spread out the re-releases to such an extent that it is very possible a new medium will exist.

If they quit releasing NEW criterions and just focused on getting their DVDs remastered for Blu-ray at the standard 5 a month, it would take almost 7 years.

It's not the end of the world, I am just a snob now that I have the gear to fully enjoy blu-ray. If I knew one I wanted wasn't around the corner, I'd get the dvd.

Really digging the covers for The Blob and Badlands.

On a different topic, I didn't expect to enjoy The War Room as much as I did, I just loved the way it was filmed, everything seemed so natural for a documentary.

It was directed by DA Pennebaker, who (along with a handful of others) basically invented the naturalist documentary. You should check out his movie Primary, which is basically the same thing but about Jack Kennedy.

I guess the lesson to be learned here (even for me) is that Pennebaker is a great documentarian, and that most/all of his stuff is or seems amazing.

And the full Otis Redding performance film on disc 2 is worth the price of admission. It's really amazing, since he's such a great performer, and there's a joy that's captured on the film. It's no surprise that Ravi Shankar loved his performance.

It's also kind of sad. Montery Pop was held in 67, and he was the first to die in a plane-crash in December of that same year. A few weeks later, "Sitting on the Dock of the Bay" was released and it was his only #1 single. He's one of the few dead performers from that concert that did not die due to drug related incidents.

So today I learned something neat that's probably of interest to other Criterion fans, provided it's not common knowledge. So Barnes and Noble has online prices for Criterions and in-store prices. I wanted to pick up the Qatsi trilogy, so I went online, reserved it for in-store pickup, reserving myself to just using a 25% coupon on full retail price. Lo and behold, I get there to pick it up and get to buy it at their online price. $47.99 vs $79.99. Couldn't use the coupon, but it still came out way cheaper. Pretty sure that's the cheapest price you can pick the set up for right now. So uh, I guess that would hold for other ones, if you really want a Criterion at the lower price and HAVE TO HAVE IT NOW, reserve it for in-store pick up!

Can't wait to watch these, too. It's been years and years since I've seen Koyaanisqatsi.
