So this isn't a picture but today at the salvage yard, while waiting on my parts to be pulled (I hate places that don't let me get my own poo poo), a large Hick comes in, dressed literally head to foot in mossy-oak camo. He starts chatting with the counter dudes, and mentions that he's looking for a 1965 Lincoln Continental hard-top. I love this gen of Continental, so I mention how rare they are, and how difficult it tends to be to fix them up, hoping to strike up a conversation, but no dice. Counter guy asks if he plans on dropping a 460 in it, and the Hick replies, "poo poo no, I'll just throw an SBC in it!" Counter guy then asked him just what he planned to do with it if he found one, and the Hick says, "Demolition derby! Those old Lincolns are tough as nails, they've got a double lined floor pan, reckon I could do some serious damage with one! " gently caress I hate ignorant rednecks.

My family has had several Infinitis over the years and I cannot make heads or tails of this new naming scheme. I understand why they're doing it - to hide the fact that if they stick a 2 liter turbo into a G it would be a G20 and 20 is less than 25 or 37 so therefore worse. This is just madness though. They're obliterating all their brand equity and recognition.

Why is this dumb? If you were placed into a company that was having middling sales the first business tactic would be to differentiate your product from those old poorly selling models (even if they're the same). I doubt the guy is concerned with what random internet goons think. His primary thought is "well, BMW does this kind of thing, why can't we??".

They're obliterating all their brand equity and recognition. Audi (where Infiniti's new head DeNyschen came from) has actually done this in China now. Instead of the model designation followed by the engine displacement, they just use arbitrary numbers, so the A6 with the 2.0l turbo is called the A6 25, the lo-po 3.0l supercharged is the A6 35 and the hi-po 3.0l is called the A6 50, or some poo poo like that. This is all in China though, and since VW/Audi is the worst carmaker in the word and CHina the worst country in the world( and VW/Audi's biggest market) who cares. Infinti's world wide headquaters is now in Hong Kong though, so maybe they are trying to pull a similar thing. JP Money posted:Why is this dumb? Well I know I am just a random internet goon so that's why I said these people were inscrutable. Also BMW didn't use to do it like that, their name scheme actually made reasonable sense, but now BMW has gone off the rails too, with the new "4 series" and all that stuff so yeah, inscrutable.

As someone from the UK who has virtually no exposure to the Infiniti brand (they sell them here, but I don't think anyone actually buys them), the new naming structure seems far, far more sensible to me. Q = normal car, the higher the number the more it costs. QX = something that looks like it might have some kind of 4X4 thingummy. The bigger the number, the bigger the car. 'I drive a G Sedan -vs- I drive a QX' means nothing to me 'I drive a Q50 -vs- I drive a QX80' immediately indicates at the very least that the QX80 is bigger better and more expensive than the Q50. The average person buying a car doesn't really care about the actual meaning of the numbers (530i, Defender 110), all they care about is bigger number (and possibly more letters) = better than.

BMW didn't change much, they just made the 3 series coupe a 4 series just like the 6 series is a coupe version of a 5 series. The last 2 digits are relative power instead of displacement since they went to smaller turbo engines across the board but didn't want to make all the numbers smaller because it would seem like the new cars were somehow "less" than the old ones. Or something.

There was neither the market demand nor the profit opportunity to differentiate cars with so many different actual bodies, platforms, configurations etc. Odd how this is kind of coming full circle.
