Holy crap, all those games getting their expansion packs, and for free? That is awesome of GoG. So, I had alpha centauri, but never really got to playing it till now. Any tips?

Terraforming/building improvements is a big part of the game. Don't need to micromanage each Former (I set 9/10 on automatic), though I'd suggest setting one to placing Sensors ASAP. The native wildlife is deadly. Don't leave bases undefended; the first thing you should build at a base is a defending unit (or bring one along with the Colony Pod). Orbital Spaceflight is the best tech ever, it leads to wonderful and horrible things. That's how I play at least; I don't know how it compares to other Civ-type games. The tutorial popups do a good job of pointing out the important bits from what I remember.

Unlucky7 posted:So, I had alpha centauri, but never really got to playing it till now. Any tips? Just a personal taste thing here, but play it without the expansion on your first run. You'll get a purer story (and SMAC has a nice little undercurrent of a plot) on your first go, and the expansion will feel more like a sequel! e: Also, the AI has no idea how to use Formers, so unless you really must win by a terrific margin, use them sparingly. Sorta spoily bit about the AI in this game: if you get too powerful, they all turn on you pretty much no matter what. When you start feeling that happen, feel free to spam the poo poo out of Formers. ee: Also I really liked using blind research, but in that I feel I'm a real minority. doctorfrog fucked around with this message at 07:30 on Dec 21, 2012 |

I started using blind research recently, and I like it a lot. It's how the game is meant to be played (what with being the default, and nonblind research being a faction power in the expansion), and it makes things a little less predictable.

So the AI is kind of bad in AC. If I am not that good with 4X games, will it balance out?

Unlucky7 posted:So the AI is kind of bad in AC. If I am not that good with 4X games, will it balance out? Honestly, it might. I'm not very good at 4X's either, and I had a pretty decisive victory as Yang on my first go. Decisive, as in, I conquered every civ on the map except the Peacekeepers, who held about a third. I could have just done a land war with them, but simply voted myself king of the world and ended it. There were some real close calls in the beginning, some good alliances breaking and forming, some good drama. I was a bit disappointed with the AI, but I had a great time. (That, and every article I read about 4X AI says that it's impossible to create a 4X AI that can truly compete with a human. I say keep tryin'.)

I always use blind research too, with spoils of war turned on for bonus techs. I also play on Specialist difficulty most the time, haven't moved any higher. Sooner or later I win, even though half my bases are governor-run and the half that aren't end up in drone riots until I get all the +Police techs. Mostly though, my games of AC are exercises in how long I can avoid turning Planet into a mess of water-filled craters

So I'm back with another Eador question; is there any way to contain/predict an enemy hero's movement? There's this enemy commander that's been marauding through my territory because guards are completely loving impotent against even a low level army, and I can't catch him because every time I try to attack him he's already moved on to the next province. I don't have a lot of experience with the diplomatic aspect of the game, so I'm not used to fighting other AI's, and I'm really hoping there's some way to stop this stupid little goose chase I have going on.

Tin Tim posted:Not really. You have to corner him either with multiple heroes or with better guards. To get better guards, in the campaign, you need to unlock more bulidings from shards. When you have those buildings, pay attention to what things you need at your castle to unlock them. Also you can find guard contracts as spoils from battles. The thing is, I'm using pretty good guards as it is (the guardsmen you get from the officer's academy). Anything better (e.g, the knightly order) would be horrifically expensive and/or require rare contracts. I'm playing random maps, by the way, so unlocking isn't a problem; I've already found contracts for hydra breeding grounds and cyclops dens. Also, it occurred to me that forts would probably be really helpful here. They'd at least slow the enemy down enough for me to engage him, and they don't all need to be garrisoned when I'm not at war.

Why did this thread basically just die off (relatively speaking) over the last few days. Is it because GOG overdid it with their end of the world sale and now there is nothing new coming? That is, we've seen the best of it and now have probably bought all we're going to for their Christmas sales?

That one was so bad it once turned up on a gaming mag's cover CD advertised as a demo - it was accidentally the full game, but it was so short nobody noticed the difference. I'd love to see Callahan's Crosstime Saloon, but GOG.com may not know about the rights holder, Spider Robinson. People should email Spider Robinson about it, keeping in mind that the rights to the game are co-owned by Atari (who bought Legend Entertainment) - even if Spider contacts GOG.com about it, GOG.com would still have to bug Atari.
