Good work man. Here's some tips:

* get a better snare sample, alter the velocity a little more note to note. sample from your favorite songs if you can get a clean hit or these are good (imo): http://www.goldbaby.co.nz/products.html

* use stuff like reverb, delay, stereo spreading, stereo imaging, etc. to make it sound like you're hearing these noises in a place and stuff like hard limiting, compression, distortion and tape overdrive/saturation to give your cerebral cortex some more complexity to chew on

* definitely need at least a little reverb and delay on that YEAH sample

* not sure what it is but there's something that doesn't sound quite on beat, it might be the sample or drums or whatever, also the pad-kinda sounding sample or beat or loop or whatever is off-key i think

But yeah I'd be down, but I might not get it done/recorded for a couple weeks. If you just wanna go in alone that's cool too

anyway so just today I was listening to martian/viking and ONLY NOW realized that he's saying "i'm a blasphemer," not "I'm a blast femur"

I have no loving clue what I thought he meant this whole time, but it was probably "what the gently caress's a blast femur? gently caress it who cares *jams*"

Ok, that works! I think I have this mentality that there must be something wrong that can be ironed out with every piece so I tend to go to message boards and such looking for those.

Good vibe and cool progression. I like the mid-range synth that plays throughout a lot but I think it has some frequency clashes with the bassline as things seem to get a little cluttered in there. Maybe EQing the mid synth a bit to reduce the frequencies that are strongly present in the bass synth would clear that up. The kick has a nice click to it but I feel like it could be given a bit more actual bass, and then probably sidechain the bassline to duck whenever the kick hits. Overall it's a cool beat though.

I'm trying to recreate the beginning sample of "Mercy" by Kanye West in Ableton, and it's driving me mad.

I'm sort of new in Ableton, so here's what troubling me. Any advice is appreciated.

I'm using the original sample.

1. Some parts of the original sample are shorter than in Mercy. "Well, it's a weeeeepin' and a moaaaanin'" isn't nearly as drawn out in the original sample and I can't figure out how to stretch those bits out.

2. It's much more sing-songy in Mercy, the voice actually rises and falls as if he were actually singing instead of just talking.

Those are the two big hang ups. Any assistance before I've pulled the last of my hair out?

This is sort of a clumsy approach and I'm not sure just how new you are to ableton but you could zoom in, slice the original sample into syllables, lengthen the relevant ones by warping (maybe "consolidate" the individual sliced bits first by selecting each one completely so it's shaded and right-click -> consolidate), and match up the edges of the samples to keep it continuous. Then you could repitch them with the Transpose tool (each number is a semitone I believe). Again, kind of clumsy, but that's how I would do it.

You got a good sense for melodies and song construction, the main issue with your beats are really the production. Everything sounds like you used presets and sounds way too quantized. Try and turn off quantization and play your beats with a keyboard or something, it'll make it sound a lot more live-like.

Also, experiment with your synths, never be satisfied with the default sound; play around with the synth itself, add distortion/saturation/reverb/echo.

Fake-edit: I was writing this as your first song way playing, Ghastly's main melody is very good, but I'm not really a fan of the electro-house turn you take with it. It just doesn't seem to fit all that well with the remainer of the song. Also don't use gunshots.

The biggest thing I can think of to say for Ice Water is the snares need to be done with something harder than claps for this, in my opinion. Also the main synth pattern needs to do some other variance of what it's playing, I like the softer sound put in around 2:55 though definitely.

I didn't like the sample you ended the intro with. I really like the synth sounds except for 1:50 on, that sounds like a cruddy preset...

Where do you guys get your synthesized drums from? Make your own or samples? I use the 808 samples that came with Maschine as well as some drum sounds I came up with in Massive but I'm looking to switch it up a bit...

EDIT: oh also he said part of the reason was because I introduced him to his girlfriend and this was one of the ways he's paying me back haha :3:

YUUUUP. We're gonna be borrowing an adapter to plug it in our laptop from a friend of ours. I'm wanting to get a hand on production so next up is a computer able to run a program (FL, Ableton, Reason, whatever. We'll do some research.)

I honestly cannot wait to try this thing out. I'm writing and recording 4 songs due at the end of the month so the more tools I've (well, I should say we) have, the better!
