Edit : The ones who associate Zidane with the headbutt or Cantona with saying silly things are loving idiots.

Absolutely yeah, even if I'm not crazy enough to believe that Henry was the best ever.

He's not the best ever but it's a drat shame that most people associate Cantona with birds or kung fu fan assault instead of his great playing. Even I liked Cantona :iiam:

That's mainly because he retired in 1997 and any media narrative following him unless you're a United fan with archive videos, or old enough to remember, is pretty much the hooligan he booted or the seagulls quote.

Cantona -is- one of the best the Premier League has seen, he was hamstrung in Europe by the daft foreign players rule and Ferguson still not getting it quite right in the Champions League by the time Cantona left, I've always considered it a great shame that it was only two years after Cantona retired that United won the treble. He didn't only take a United side that hadn't threatened for the league in 25 years/won it in 26 and raise it almost single handedly to a double winning juggernaut, he helped to inspire and bring through the class of 92. Ferguson gets the credit for the Beckham/Giggs/Scholes era but they wouldn't have been anything close to as good as they became if not for Cantona. There's a reason he, more than any other past great, is still sung about regularly in the stands and it's not because of booting hooligans or trolling the press.

It's because he brought things like this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UJykcGfF_Ek

and things like this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F6JULy5_ox4

It didn't matter who he was partnered with, Hughes, McClair, Cole, Solskjaer, he helped them shine and even in his bad games he was often the difference between a win or dropping points. It's no surprise Ferguson put up with more from Cantona than he has or would from any other player and more often than not Cantona rewarded that patience in spades on the pitch.

I grew up watching him and despite players like Messi today and last generation's Zidane and even Paul Scholes who many on this forum know I've got a massive hardon for, I only ever had one hero and that was Cantona.

Do they sell posters of him doing that turn after that one goal vs sunderland? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3vAOUgmRXsc Because I would want one of those as I think next to AGUEROOOO it's one of the most awe-inspiring moments in the PL. You can just feel the power shift and he realizes he's the harbringer of the death of football.

Shift? That was his last season at United, the power had well and truly shifted. The AGUEROOOOOOOO moment for United was the Steve Bruce goal against Sheffield Wednesday:

Anything other than a win would have given United an almost impossible task to claim that first title win.

Agreed. Cantona is one of the most gifted players to ever play in the Premier League and definitely the most important to his team.

Also that Sunderland goal is my favourite football memory of all time. Only "... and Solskjaer has won it!" comes close.

I love Zidane but if you're implying Messi's legitimate growth hormones are a stain on his legacy or whatever surely you've got to remember Zidane admitted Juventus hooked him up to what was probably something illegal back in the day.

So many of these goals seem to be first-time shots. Beaten the defence, could dribble the stationary keeper or sidestep the onrushing one but no, he has to take the shot. It's certainly something different from the other geniuses.

Three weird things I can remember about United in that era in the CL:

- The lob scored for Juve (by Alen Boksic?)
- That wondersave against Rapid Vienna
- The save against Zamoranos diving header

Probably. There was something like 10 minutes of added time in that match because the referee had to go off the pitch for treatment iirc and Bruce got what is now known as a Fergie time winner. Ref was off the pitch for about nine minutes.

One of my favourite "stories" related to Cantona is this one:

Yorke anecdote posted:

Keane was always good at cutting down to size those he suspected did not fully understand what it meant to play for the club. Dwight Yorke experienced something similar, also in his first training game, when Keane booted the ball at him, deliberately too hard, and the new signing miscontrolled it. "Welcome to United," Keane hissed with that Tommy DeVito stare. "Cantona used to kill them."

I think a lot of it is that a lot of younger fans have this weird selective memory where anything from the 70s/80s (before they were born) gets overromanticised and anything from the 90s (especially if it happened outside of the Premier League) they sort of take for granted.

For content, have some goals.
