kefkafloyd posted:Yeah, I learned my lesson with the Sopwith Camel. Separate all of the parts by color before you get building. It'll take you an extra half hour or so of time up-front, but it'll save you hours on the back end when you're frantically picking through a pile to find that one particular piece. My usual strategy is to just dump the bags that I get into separate piles and use that as a storing guide. Usually after the first couple of grabs, I get a "feel" for which pile most likely has the piece I need based upon what else is in those piles. Like when doing the Tower Bridge with my family, I was the "master sorter" guy. Sitting on the floor with every bag opened into its own piles (all cheese slopes went into a plastic box), when someone got to a step and needed 24x of some piece I would pick it out and line it up for them. This worked well with two builders and me as the piece picker since often they would need some ungodly multiple of a piece to make 16x of the same item. Rarely though, I get into an organizational mood with a set, and sort them into something a bit more logical: Squashy Nipples posted:Anyone know the scoop on this part? What was going wrong? I have some of the older actuators, and have had no problems with them. If you had any issues with them, just call up lego for the Repair Kit for that set. I just spent my day off building the Haunted House, which was a Christmas present from my parents. Got a bit of fatigue from some of the more repetitive parts (I'm looking at you 6 windows in a row) but it's the first sort of specialist lego set I've ever built and I love how it looks. Built the Vampire Castle the other day which my girlfriend bought me for Christmas thinking it was the Haunted House (I'm not the only one this happened too it seems) but it worked out, because that build was fun as hell and I love all the gothic castle cliches and I would have ended up with two Haunted Houses anyway. I actually found the Vampire Castle more interesting because it didn't repeat so much and I didn't know a lot about it so I'd get so far into a section and be like 'oh it's a spike pit!' which I loved, but the House is a much cooler model. First time I've got Lego for Christmas in about ten years, and the fact I got my first two big sets of my new Lego collection made it an awesome day for presents.

I was just putting away the last two years of advent calendar figures and I took stock of the obscene number of mini figs I've collected over the years. I have decide to try my hand at BrikWars. Has anyone here played it? I'm considering tweaking the rules and would like to brainstorm with anyone who's got experience.

I'm a huge Star Wars Lego geek - I have a ton of ships, multiples of several starfighters, the Falcon on my desk at work... and I really dislike that shuttle. It's one of the only really, really boring ship designs from the original trilogy, and was so completely undeserving of the UCS treatment. If anything could retire and not go up in value, I'd think it's that, but I know nothing of aftermarket pricing for Lego sets.

The two shuttles and the Maersk train are my favorite three sets from this year. Between the shuttle and R2D2, my faith in the UCS line is restored after some less than stellar sets. Also, if you want either the Red or the Yellow cargo train, amazon .deand .fr have them for 130 and 140ish respectively shipped to the US. Red is also retiring soon. http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B005DROHGS http://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B003A2JCR2

I always liked the imperial shuttle design, it is one of the few star wars sets I own. I saw the millennium falcon for 80 euros earlier today though, so I might pick that up as well, either to flip or to build. Squashy Nipples posted:Anyone know the scoop on this part? What was going wrong? I have some of the older actuators, and have had no problems with them. I think the problem was that the actuators were not well greased, which meant the internal clutch gears kicked in when raising the heavy main arm. (Especially if you did not alogn the two perfectly). Once one of the gears slipped slightly and they were misaligned then the excavator really had problems raising the arm. I have one of the initial ones, and while I picked up the replacement parts I never got around to using them because it worked well without them. You have to be really careful when building it though, because there are a ton of gears/axles, and if anything is too tight it doesn't work very well.

I'm a big fan of the helicopter sets that Lego has put out recently. The Heavy Lift Helicopter and Transport Chopper were two of my favorite sets in 2012. I'll definitely be picking up the Red Rotors from the new 2013 sets. Maybe I just really love heavy lift helicopters.

Picked up 20 Series 8 minifigs for a dollar a pop yesterday; all of you goons who can't find any (I couldn't today), my bad. Didn't get more than two of any individual one either, so that was nice (still missing 3 though). The UCS Shuttle looks great. I really don't like the R2D2, but the shuttle is beautiful and would probably be a purchase on my end if it didn't look like three really similar giant wings around a small body. After Tower Bridge I don't think I can stomach another repetitive build.

My grandmother gave me $1000 this year for Christmas. I told my family I was putting it into savings but I just spent every last penny on Lego. Highlights of what I've got coming: Grand Emporium, Fire Brigade, City Hall, Pet Shop, City Airport, Police Station, Log Cabin and Apple Tree House. I've never felt so dirty in my entire life. Some pics from the first of my post-Christmas sale purchases: The Malevolence. This is the main assembly for the flick missle batteries on either side of the ship. It seems almost unnecessarily complex for something that weakly fires gimmick weaponry. The main structural elements after about three or four bags. The aft section was honestly one of my favorite parts; it seems like there's so few Technic studded beams anymore. The blue plates near the middle are where the missile assemblies go. The full assembly installed. Sorry some of these are sort of dark; I was building at about 12:30am, while waiting for some family to come home. Both missile assemblies in place. The ball joint near the top of the picture is where the forward hull assembly attaches. That is one particular mechanism I though was neat, and I feel silly for not getting pictures of it. The tail assembly. Some decent SNOT is used throughout the ship, but this is the most obvious. I also liked the Deco style of the upper part. The whole thing sits on half-stud 1x2's, as you would expect. Almost there. The rear hull panels fold down to access the storage bay inside. I used the stickers on this set because the scale is entirely lost without the windows on the front portion. This is also the closest I got to the front hull assembly. Essentially, the rear is held in place with a hinge piece and a ball socket, and the front is held by friction and position. It's more sturdy that it looks, but I definitely wouldn't pick the whole ship up by anything but the carrying handle. The completed beastie. It's a little shorter than two feet, about eight inches wide, and about six inches high. The front hull pieces attach to the spine from the previous pic through standard click hinges, and the upper rear hull pieces use claw hinges to fold up for better access to the storage bays. Overall, the build was pretty well organized, but the books were a little hard to parse at times due to the orthographic view. A number of pieces looked entirely different thanks to the angle, and more than once I had to stop and make sure I didn't miss a brick somewhere, when it was actually something else. It's not a problem I usually have. The minifigs are alright; I'm not a huge fan of the Clone Wars googly eyes. Grevious himself is pretty awesome, though. There's a tiny bit of flex in the final assembly, but the construction is sound. It's exacerbated by the placement of the handle, though, which is about and inch and a half behind the center of gravity. If you think the set looks neat, I definitely suggest picking it up. I'm not sure it's worth the full price, but I thought it was a fair deal at $80. My next sets are Darth Maul's Interceptor, the Ghost Train, and two medium-sized Dino sets. Anyone interested in pics of those as well?

Made a trip to the Lego store yesterday and holy crap, for a store that had nothing on sale it was easily the busiest store in the mall. My girlfriends dad gave me the cash to pick up the new Arkham Asylum for christmas, which is now sitting across from me in its huge gently caress off box. I also picked up the Mr. Freeze set and the halloween minifigure set for that kick rear end zombie. Speaking of problems my girlfriend and I feed off of each other and our rooms are filled to the brim with Lego. I literally have no room to put anymore Lego. I have two clear display cases on my wall filled with series 1-8 (I'm missing 4 from series 8) with a row of basketball minifigures sitting on top. My TV stand is covered in Lego, I have shelves covered in Lego, my dresser is covered in Lego. I bought a storage-cube-thing, which is completely filled with lego. Add on top of that all the collectible star wars micromachines and Aliens micromachines my room is the envy of every 10 year old on the block. My girlfriends room is just as bad, filled with star wars lego and about 50 star wars action figures. I just checked my VIP balance on the lego site, 1453. Now granted there were some big purchases that I earned double points with but jesus christ. This is what happens when you're 24, live at home with a full time job that literally pays for everything and I have no expenses. Don't worry goons I'm not a complete manchild, my girlfriend and I are saving for a downpayment on a house. Though were it not for our Lego habit we'd be there a lot sooner.

Man, is it just normal people taking advantage of the Lego markdowns or are there scalpers roaming around with cart fulls? One Walmart had perfect shelves except the holes where things were marked down. I did at least snag the big dump truck for half off, 2 Luke's land speeders for $10 each and do to someone not paying attention, I got the new Hobbit Bag End with a clearance tag on it for $30. If it is a popular set even when its 20% off I noticed if I don't get it the first day of the sale the store is cleared out by the next day. I don't resell lego myself and have very few duplicate sets. The resellers arent bad per say, they will help lego move more product and when they keep 'investing' in the big sets I like I am happy that lego keeps coming out with more of them because they sell.
