How does unlocking a Sprint iPhone 4S work? Is it the same process as the AT&T unlock? I ask because I came across a couple of pages that mentioned inserting a new SIM in as part of the process, which implies the person already has a foreign provider's SIM with which to do so. I remember not needing to do anything with the SIM for my AT&T phone, though.

So 6.0.2 is out. Can we still save our blobs and upgrade to the new firmware and be safe to downgrade if a JB shows up for an earlier version of ios 6?

Does anyone know of a way I can use VirtualBox to boot tethered? I just got rid of my Windows 8 partition and am just using Windows XP virtualized but it always gives me a Missing Keys.plist error. Device is in DFU mode and acknowledged by the guest OS. Host OS is Arch.

I've requested my iPhone 4 (5.1.1) to be unlocked. The guys in the store told me I'd have to 'restore' my phone via iTunes and once it's been restored I should get a message saying I'm now unlocked. If it makes any difference I'm on Vodafone UK. Question is can I restore without updating?

I've seen that error pop up before with a Windows 7 host machine. I don't remember exactly what I did to fix it but if I had to guess I probably did the exact same Google search and followed the instructions on that exact page. You can definitely restore the phone without having to update, I just don't know if the phone will actually be unlocked. The only problem I see is if using TinyUmbrella to make sure you can re-install 5.1.1, iTunes may not be able to access the server to know the phone is unlocked.

It's really frustrating that there's basically no talk of a jailbreak. Chronic and Musclenerd are both playing with the Wii U and it's their god given right to do so but I'd prefer if everyone just said "no we're not doing anything about it" so I can stop checking. Really I'm just complaining because I"m sad....

Tell me about it. I just got a snarky email from my IT guy about buying Apple products, and he refuses to enable any non-OpenVPN servers (like he promised to do a year ago when we flipped to OpenVPN in the first place) until I can get GuizmOVPN installed on my mini. I'm torn between being irked that he'd go back on his word and being irked that Apple still doesn't support OpenVPN out of the box...but I think instead of either I'll just shrug at my boss the next time he asks me to do something from home. vv

(cross-posted from iPhone thread) This isn't really a jailbreak thing, as it doesn't require jailbreak, but it is a way of hacking/modding your iOS device - there's a method now to install custom carrier logos without being jailbroken (like the jailbreak program "Zeppelin", but for stock iOS). Yes, this even works on the iPhone 5. http://uhelios.com/downloads/ The program is Mac OS X 10.7+, but you can install IPCC files from Mac OS X or Windows. No rebooting or respringing, no messing with backup/restore. It applied immediately for me. I have some AT&T / Carrier 13.0/13.1 IPCC files here: http://xenomorph.net/data/ios/carriers/ I tested them on my iPhone 4S (AT&T, running iOS 6.0.1, not jailbroken). Regardless of feelings on the app or its uses (legal or otherwise), I do think it's worth mentioning that Installous is gone. Hackulo.us shut down their repository, which prevents anyone from downloading it, and triggered some kind of killswitch in the app itself which prevents anyone from trying to use it. Kind of curious how people feel about this. There are alternatives out there, but with Installous having been so popular, does anyone feel like this is a victory against iOS piracy?

They weren't just for piracy. I remember couple of times that apps got broken updates. With Installous, I was able to nuke the app and download the older version as needed. Not to mention all the apps that remove features in updates.

I've just jailbroken my ipad 2 5.1.1 using absinthe. after restoring from my backup it only synced 100 apps automatically, no big deal I went back and tried to sync the rest manually. However there's seems to be another 100 or so apps missing from the list in itunes. I don't suppose there's any way to recover these with data is there? I suppose its not the end of the world, I mean I do have way too many apps I don't use anyway, I just hope the important ones are still about.

I'm missing onboard filesystem interaction, openvpn, VLC, no-fee tethering, and the ability to check if a thing is actually worthwhile before buying it, but anything that I "tested" for more than a month I always ended up either buying or dropping because updating it was a hassle. The app store would be a hell of a lot nicer if they just put in a 7 day return policy and only let you "try" it on one account per app. If you really wanted to you could chain "trying" apps by signing up for a new apple ID once per week but I don't think anyone would go through that much hassle over it.

That said, the number of devs who don't do universal apps is a pet peeve of mine, and since they rarely state as much in their app description it's not until later that you find out (for example) that getting Things to sync across your phone, pad, and computer will run you $80, since every version is sold separately. But, anyways. I hope they jailbreak soon

So FYI there is a jailbreak that is currently being developed. Planetbeing made a comment over on reddit. I still think it's using their dev-method of breaking into it but they do have some exploits and they are working on it. That's the first "real" news of people working on it. Made my day.hunter x az posted:https://twitter.com/pod2g/status/287133062771384323 If you read the rest of his updates, he's not actively working on it. So I just called and had my iPhone 4 unlocked by my old provider, as I'm going to be travelling in America and want to be able to get a sim to use while I'm there. Right now I'm jailbroken on 5.1.1, but from what I've read when it gets finalized I'll have to do a restore to finalize the unlock. Is there anything I'll be able to do to make sure I don't lose my jailbreak? I think I have the blobs saved somewhere, if that matters. Basically, how do I unlock/restore my phone and still keep my jailbreak?

You should do just fine if you use Redsnow to do it. It'll update the baseband to the latest I believe, but since you're using a legit provider-sanctioned unlock, that shouldn't be a dealbreaker. http://blog.iphone-dev.org/post/33546509336/restoration-reinvigoration
