For those that havn't seen the book:

Legion tactical squads can shoot twice in a turn if they haven't moved but can't shoot in the following turn. They cannot take special/heavy weapons.
The Apothecarys give the squad they join FNP.
Volkite Calivers are R30 S6 AP5 Heavy 2, but for each unsaved wound cause another S6 AP 5 hit.
Pre-Heresy Predators have Heavy 4 Autocannons.

This may be my personal experience only, but I've played 3 games of 30k now and in each one I have been very glad that I paid the points to upgrade my predators with the plasma executioner turret. 3 3" AP2 blasts each turn, against an opponent who will also be fielding primarily marines. They have always made their points back.

I have not tried it yet, but you may want to consider swapping the chaplain for a librarian who can use prescience, and then tagging him onto one or both of the tactical squads. The only thing better than 20 marines rapid-firing Fury of the Legion is rerolling any misses in those first 80 shots.

Thanks for you help, unfortunately I bought the other predator and don't have an executioner turret, I may proxy it and invest in one in the future. I had considered a Librarian but decided against it as Death Guard weren't very keen on psykers, I have one built and may end up using him if I find I need him.

I'd say that actually killing a Vendetta with one is pretty rare for the most part- d3+1 hits needing 5s to glance isn't a great place to be, and AP3 is exactly the wrong number to actually be getting anything from the vehicle damage table. It's no worse than something like a Quad Cannon or whatnot, but by most measures AV12 is pretty drat resilient to that sort of attack.

The Vector Strikes do really change the dynamic of where "safe" places are from it, though, and with access to Hover Mode as well it can really push the attack on a single unit if you really have to. All in all the Heldrake is as big a game-changer as a lot of the other major flyers, just in a different way. It's really beautiful in a "No, remove your models, I don't care what your special rules are" sort of way.

Yeah, I didn't think through the math and was thinking vendettas are AV10 on the side. It's not such a good chance. Still, if the heldrake comes on second and gets to vector strike right away, it has a pretty good chance of staying out of the vendetta's firing arc.

It's really too bad that the heldrake is only BS3 because that makes the baleflamer such a no-brainer option. But if the heldrake was BS4, the hades AC option would make it into a really nasty interceptor.

Cool so I just have to get the core book.

All I have left for 40k are my Necrons, a small bit of Dark Eldar, and Tau, I know the last one is still the redheaded step-child but I assume my Necrons and DE are mostly still the same bringers of pain and horror I love?

Oh and also some still unbuilt Space Marines I may make into Dark Angels because why not.

Tau are actually getting a new book soon, probably the next one after Dark Angels. Necrons are very strong, one of the best armies right now, but you will have to buy a lot of new models. I know some posters will jump in to disagree with me but I don't think Dark Eldar are in a good place at the moment. I just don't see how to make the army work now that skimmer transports are so lame (and point costed for 5th) and cover saves have gotten nerfed.

Holy poo poo for real? gently caress Dark Angels then I'll wait for the Tau book I've been waiting ages for.

I suppose I should focus on making my Necrons a better force rather than try to rejigger my mostly skimmer filled DE army. Any general guidelines for shifting from 5th to 6th for Necrons? I had a pretty speed focused army built up, Tomb Blades and Night Scythes and such, is that still a pretty valid tactic?

Oh, I didn't realize you had 5th edition Necrons... for some reason I thought you were talking about their old poo poo. Everything is the same going from 5th to 6th, but better. Except the CCB. That got nerfed. Pretty much everything that was good is still good now, and I think your speedy army will work fine. What exactly are you running in it? You can only reserve half of your units now so you can't have a full Night Scythe army.

I've also had some extremely fun games of 2nd edition which I should really do a battle report of one day. 6th edition is probably the most polished version of 40k I've ever played but it doesn't capture the sheer madness that makes 2nd so... beautiful...
