I won't buy the 3d BluRay since I don't have a 3D TV but I'm definitely buying the regular one. Any way to put tangible, positive numbers to hopefully drive a sequel forward.

Nowadays they are, but someone who doesn't want it can still save money with a cheaper 2D-only model, so actual 3D TV home penetration might not be that great (I've heard consumer response to 3D has been a resounding "meh", and a lot of the 3D penetration would just be down to all really high-end models one would get for the best PQ having 3D anyway). I'm sure in a few years virtually every display sold will have 3D just because, but we're not there yet.

I'm sure in a few years virtually every display sold will have 3D just because, but we're not there yet. It's drat close. I bought a new TV last year that had everything we wanted at the price we wanted, and it just happened to also have 3D, and a lot of people I'd been talking to were in the same boat. "We'll never use it", we said, but now that we have the option, we do try to take advantage of it. As more people are buying new TVs and 3d becomes more and more "standard", that shift is already happening. Without having done any exhaustive research, it seems like if you're in the market for a relatively decent HDTV with the usual bells and whistles, that TV's going to have 3D on it.

marktheando posted:It's not a reference to something. I forget the exact line but it was something like "I sense anger, and control, and something else..." The Chief Judge cuts Anderson off because we don't need to know any more about Dredd. It's done to add a sense of mystery and layer to the character. There was a commentary for the movie 'Serenity' where Joss Whedon explains that it's a common scriptwriting technique to get people to pay attention to a character. It was used in the movie for Captain Reynolds (where River reads his mind and says virtually the exact same thing as in Dredd), and Whedon admits it was just a plot device to get people who hadn't watched Firefly to pay attention to the captain. In a film where there isn't a psychic mind-reader, it would have been some side character saying some line like "watch him, he's more dangerous than he seems" or the like. Probably the first DVD in a long time I bought on the day it come out. This movie was a joy to watch in theater, and it still is on my dinky little laptop. Its weird to call some of the shots "beautiful" considering how horrifically violent the movie is...but its the first word that pops up in my head from the opening shot of Mega-City One to the slow mo scenes.

It's quite astounding to learn that Gavin from Rooster Teeth shot those. Kind of like when I learned that Samuel Beckett (yes, the playwright) and Andre the Giant were mates.

We sold a decent number of them today. Its crazy how vibrant and gorgeous the whole movie looks. Speaking of gorgeous, Olivia Thirlby And I figure that the "something else..." is just that Dredd actually cares under all that armor he carries around inside his head.

I did a bit of a read-up on the character and it appears he does do some nice things when he feels the situation calls for it, like making sure Fergee would be remembered and honoured by MegaCity-One forever by erecting giant statues of him after he played a huge part and sacrificed his own life in overthrowing Judge Cal, for example. I interpreted it as Anderson sensing that part of Dredd before being cut off.

First read, every scene with "snow flakes," is someone experiencing true freedom.

Watching the behind-the-scenes stuff and it's really awesome how much of the movie was practical effects. Dredd's gun was real and designed around a basic 9mm, Dredd's motorbike was real and designed around a 500cc, Mega City One is just real-world shots of Johannesburg with some digital painting over them, people getting shot during the Slow-Mo scenes were blown with giant blasts of compressed air to give them that look like they'd just gotten hit by something high-impact, etc. I know some review(s) said this Blu-Ray was barebones but I don't feel like that at all. The special features on here are pretty interesting. Plus the video quality and audio quality loving blew me away and I felt like I was back watching this in the theater again while watching the Blu-Ray. I don't feel ripped off at all. For anyone on the fence about buying it, buy it.

Was really neat seeing how they did a majority of the stunning slow mo scenes using mainly practical effects and lots of time intensive trial-error with their special high frame rate cameras.
