Here's some pointers: don't use autofocus when you learn. It's so much more beneficial to learn to do everything yourself (focus, aperture, shutter, etc) because once you know what all that does THEN you can make the computer handle the stupid constants and free you up.

Also, mess with the white balance because holy poo poo compact fluorescent do NOT make good photo lighting. It'll take that overwhelming yellow down a bit. I'd also recommend Adobe Lightroom or Yorba Shotwell (lol linux) for managing and basic edits.

Trust me half my Lightroom folders are my loving cats.

Thank you for the tips. I took a year of photography at school but that was 6 years ago so I've forgotten nearly all of it :saddowns:

And yes, you're bang on about the lighting, my parents' house has gross fluorescents.
