All these Smash kids bitching about "randomness" need to quit being such nerds, go play some poker, and learn how to loving GAMBOOOOOOOL. Standardizing things and removing "luck" is the fastest way to kill off interest in your game of choice.

You can bring up Poker as proof that a competitive game can have randomness, but I could bring up Chess as proof that a competitive game can get by fine with virtually no randomness at all. Ultimately it's the design of the game that dictates what level of randomness is appropriate.

But the issue with randomness is that it's fine when it's results are relatively bounded and there are enough iterations of the random event so that one particular result won't determine a match. Poker matches will have tons of hands and there's no one forcing you to go all-in on any particular hand, so randomness alone won't sink a competent player. A fighting game set is relatively short in comparison and bad luck with certain items can cost you an entire life, which is a comparatively huge swing from a random event that could be entirely outside of your control. It's been mentioned in these threads before that competitive Smash nearly did have items, but eventually decided against them because they couldn't turn off certain explosive items. If Nintendo were a company trying to foster a competitive scene on a modern platform that's something you could easily patch, and then maybe you have an entirely different course of evolution.

Melee is a good competitive game and I like to watch it, despite that, I heavily dislike the Smash community as a whole.

Turn off items, choose a stock/time limit, ban like 70% of the stages (lol), loser can counterpick. The last part is the only thing that requires any sense of complexity to make the game competitive.

High level Melee is fun to watch, and is pretty deep IMO.

I used to play Melee with people in NorCal who were good.

It's a fun game because of all the silly tricks you can do to make the game even faster, and it has some really cool ideas like vitality instead of HP, and an interesting take on the guard crush/break system with shields.

That being said, the scene is awful and the game has gotten more boring, not more exciting as people have learned to play it better.

I can confirm that there were was a real issue with stolen poo poo at apex.

My wallet got stolen with around 200 dollars in it at the venue. (They grabbed it from my backpack). They were nice enough to drop it off at a local post office without the money though.

A lot of people "lost" controllers and a couple of phones too.

No one got caught, but I'm leaning toward the smash community (+friends) being the issue here.

Theft has always been a problem at tournaments of all types. People lose sticks at Evo every year. I remember an entire box of PS2 to Dreamcast converters got jacked at Evo 2008. In 2009 I loaned my PS3 for the tournament at GameUniCon in Massachusetts, some guy walked off with it, although they caught him a few hours later based on a few eye witnesses and security cameras.

Welp, Smash community or not, thievery was apparently really bad at Apex. So bad, in fact, that...

Did a full inventory. Missing a lot of things. I am missing sponsor things that I have to replace and it is not cheap. I am very upset and disappointed with the amount of theft. Due to the amount it will cost to replace everything if those things including several wiis, my ps3, and many game jones and other cables, I cannot do apex again. I am really sorry everyone. I hope that person comes thru.

So yeah, that's a thing.

That is really unfortunate. A lot of times the people running these tournaments pay a ton out of pocket just to run them (see Canada Cup, etc). Hopefully stuff ends up finding its way back or something, though it certainly isn't likely.

Well it is one of those "that is why we can't have nice things" moments. You have to have proper security at an event like this. You can't trust people. You have to make it so that the only people touching or going near equipment are players plugging in, or someone specifically working the event, and the event staff have to be people who can be held accountable. Can't do much for personal items like sticks, wallets and phones, but it is RIDICULOUS for such a large amount of event equipment to be stolen.

Well drat. That was probably a $10k donation that went in. I looked yesterday and Skullgirls was catching up to MLP with Melee getting farther behind. Now Melee is at $13k with Skullgirls at $5k and MLP at $4300.

I don't understand the mentality behind the assholes who would steal from events like this.

These events are organized from the ground up with a lot of the expenses coming out of pocket of the organizers themselves. This isn't Capcom, this is the fgc running these event. All this poo poo does is make the fgc look bad and make sponsors hesitate the next time someone asks for sponsorship.

Also why is it the Smash crowd is making the fgc community look so bad? It's my understanding that the Smash tourneys ran the smoothest and the thefts that occurred weren't related to the equipment used for the Smash tourneys. My apologies if I'm wrong about that.

Mostly games and setups, although it's just as likely that it was FGC people as Smash people. APEX seems to have a whole new scale, but NEC had setups, games, and wallets stolen in a fair amount.

Cool. My phrasing probably could have been better, but I agree that it probably had less to do with the community affiliation as much as it was "well this is some rear end in a top hat who steals poo poo".
