I can take that a step further and say that I love animals more than them and don't want them suffering even outside a shelter in this capitalist/bush/Amerikkka place so it's best they be made into dinner/boots/car interiors for all of us. edit: but only after these animals have known the joy of procreating, at least a few times. They focus on mammals and cute things because they are more like us, but they occassionally sent out press releases for invertbrates, such as the time they sent out one decrying Obama for pimp-slapping a fly. Their perspective is that there is no point in trying to convince people to stop being cruel to crabs until you've convinced them it's not okay to be cruel to cows.

If I buy a single song from an album on itunes, it drops the price of the full album by the price of the song. If you bought the full worth of the album in songs and there were still songs left over, could you complete the album for free?

Do colleges actually do any sort of follow-up on ethnicity questions? What's to prevent an applicant from falsely claiming he has Mexican heritage (or some other near-Caucasian ethnicity) for a better chance of admission?

This could also possibly effect entry into other, different colleges. Why would any college want anyone who lies on their admission papers? It's like admitting a cheater.

What's to prevent an applicant from falsely claiming he has Mexican heritage (or some other near-Caucasian ethnicity) for a better chance of admission? I'm very sure that there is a large amount of variation, and I do grad admissions not under-grad so take this with some salt, but : At my school at least, we don't really follow up, mostly because it doesn't help you that much. In the unlikely event that we had two applicants who were identical in academics, letters of rec, GRE's, writing samples, personal statements, etc. I guess ethnicity might tip the scale? Maybe? But at that point we're talking such fine-grained stuff that it's going to lose to stuff like how well you'd fit into the department (in the sense of if you're interested in research that our faculty specializes in, not in a old-boys' club way : so like we have a phonologist who works on Endangered Languages, so between two equal applicants, one into German phonology and the other, say, Yurok, the latter is going to win). I mean, I guess if you said you were black and then you showed up and were obviously not, and someone actually happened to remember this, which is unlikely, they might on their own time look it up and raise a stink? But we're deeeeeep in hypotheticals at this point. As far as I'm aware it's more for statistics than anything else. But again, variation like whoah. Hell, I don't even know if you're American. Plus there's going to be a huge gap between State and Public colleges. Ninja'd to add : If you were caught, though, yeah, there'd be hell to pay. Like, I think they can actually press charges, but I'd have to look at the application again, but I know there's a clause in there about not lying and they can blacklist you.

My father in Montreal enjoys listening to AM radio in Burlington, Vermont but often has a hard time getting good reception. I suppose he could stream their feed over the internet using a tablet but he's not very tech-savvy and there might be cheaper solution. Is there a high-quality AM radio out there that would be guaranteed to pick up radio stations in Burlington?

If he's willing to buy a roof mount directional antenna for his house then it should pick up those stations rather well (generally these antennas are also for FM and TV reception). There's also ways to make your own directional AM antenna out of wire and wood that if he positions right should greatly improve reception. Here's an example of one way to build one: http://socalradiowaves.com/columns/am_antenna.html

She went to the University of Texas Law School where she listed her ethnicity as "white". In the interview for her job with Harvard she described herself as being a minority. After she gained tenure at Harvard she remove herself from faculty directory as being a minority. At first she said she didn't know why Harvard listed her as a minority. Later she then said that she told Harvard that she was of a minority ethnic group. Officials at Harvard though said that their decision in hiring her was not based on ethnicity. Not all people of given ethnicity have all (or any) of the physical characteristics generally associated with it. And how much "ethnic blood" percentage do you have to have in you to qualify as that ethnicity for scholarship/admissions purposes? That's a serious question; I don't know the answer or how any answer could be enforced. DNA test? Certified genealogy records? Your parents or grandparents backing you up? Yeah that's what I was thinking. There was a Jewish kid with Mexican heritage at my high school who ended up going to Yale, and there's no way you can tell he's anything but white by just looking at him.

It seems that Sony has stopped supporting the proprietary software for their digital voice recorders (Digital Voice Editor 3.2.01), their website says it's only compatible with Windows XP, 2000 and Vista. Am I just hosed now? I've got an ICD-P520, I'm running Linux on my laptop and the wife's running Windows 8 on hers. I see that an older version (2.4.04) of the software works in Wine, but I can't seem to find it anywhere. If I am hosed, does anybody have recommendations for voice recorders that won't turn into unsupported paperweights in 5 years?

I'm trying to start Vlogging, whether it's on Youtube or where ever. Most likely Youtube since it's the most convenient. I LOVE the idea of vlogging, I think it's a great way to get stuff off your mind and have fun while doing it. It's kinda hard for me since I don't really go out much, and my only good quality video recorder is my iPhone. I also get nervous when I try to talk to the camera, it's just not comfortable for me yet. I have a lot of things to say, but I don't know how to say it. Does that make sense? So what do you guys like to see in a good Vlog?

If your goals are that general and you start out trying to please an imaginary audience, no one will watch. If you talk about something you care about, one or two people will watch. If you talk about that subject in a way that most people can't/wish they could, a few people will watch. A few people is the best an ordinary person can realistically hope for; it's not a bad goal. Go niche: if you know about the mills that made fabrics for the UK Navy in WWII, talk about that. Because people who are into that deep of a niche don't have anything else to watch.

Not even niche... but just something you're really, really into. If you're enthusiastic about something and take the time to figure out how to express it, other people will generally see that enthusiasm and get interested themselves.

I've been thinking of recording what ever I want to talk about, and make a small animation for it. I'm not a great animator though, I don't have a tablet and all that. But I think this way would be a fun and entertaining way to say stuff without actually having to get in front of a camera. Plus, I haven't seen anyone do this yet, so it'll be something new. Thanks guys for the help. Love you all E: ORRRR...I could just do a normal video which won't take me days to make... Whatever, i'll put more thought into how I wanna approach this vlogging thing. Hmm, Cleartype maybe (subpixel rendering of typefaces for RGB LCDs)? Just a guess. If you have the screen/effort for it, try zooming it up, screenshotting, and scaling it back down in an image tool so you're effectively anti-aliasing the fonts. That's probably a giant pain in the rear end if you have to do more than a couple of shots...

Timid posted:I've been thinking of recording what ever I want to talk about, and make a small animation for it. Don't do the animation if you aren't an animator, it will just cost more time which you probably need to focus on how everything is presented. Besides there actually is a fair bit of that. Just check out a lot of podcasts put on youtube. They often fill the images with animation. I would suggest picking something you love and discussing that. At first just try and get in front of a camera and do it. Then watch it a bunch of times and notice things that happen. It might be that you say um or like a lot. You might pause a lot. You might find you aren't animated enough (or too much) In any case you can fix these through practice. I would suggest also having some general things prepared in advance in case you get stumped and can quickly get back on track. Presenting solo does take a bit of skill but its nothing someone cannot learn.

I LOVE the idea of vlogging, I think it's a great way to get stuff off your mind and have fun while doing it. Don't just try to talk off the cuff unless you have good reason to believe that you're actually good at that. Most people aren't, so prepare something, practice it and then record it. Then edit it. Don't just dump an unedited video onto the internet, cut bits that don't work, redo bits you messed up, just generally fix it. If you can't be bothered putting in the effort to make it look decent, it's probably not going to be worth anyone's time to watch. Remember that the point of video is that you have a visual component. If it's just you talking at a camera, it would probably work just as well as text and almost certainly wouldn't lose anything if it were audio-only. So make use of the visual element, give us something worth looking at. Good examples of how to present information in an interesting way: CGPGrey, ViHart, Hate By Numbers.

Xandu posted:I'm trying to take a screenshot of a pdf, but the quality keeps degrading for some reason. Is there any way to prevent this? On a windows computer. PDFs are usually encoded with vector graphics and actual text (unless there's a bitmap image embedded). This means the reader can render it at whatever quality it feels like, and it might not play nicely with the screencap utility. Dig through the settings of your PDF reader and see if you can find a "render quality." Or, convert the pdf straight to high-quality image. Quick google reveals this online service for that, but I haven't used it so I can't speak for it. NOTinuyasha posted:I've got a really cheap cooking pot that I think I bought at Walmart ages ago. Is that normal? Will I get cancer and die if I keep using it? Thanks goons. Happens all the time; I'd replace the pan. If it's scratched, most likely tiny bits of Teflon ARE flaking off into your food. There's some evidence that Teflon, including renegade bits of coating from old teflon pans, can contribute to stomach cancer. To my knowledge it's inconclusive to this point, but I think it's worth some caution. On top of all that, teflon pans start to get really lovely when scratched; food sticks like crazy. Also: I don't know what you use pots for, but I generally cook liquids in them. There's not much reason to have a non-stick pot; only pans. Also also: Extend the life of your non-stick pans by never using metal utensils on them while cooking, and don't clean them with steel wool. edit: vvvvv add olive oil to your noodles right after you drain the water, and stir it around - doing this, I've never had a problem with stuck-on noodles in my non-non-stick pots alnilam fucked around with this message at 19:56 on Jan 16, 2013 |
