Yes, please do not spoil reality. If you do not experience reality in exactly how the director intended (completely oblivious to facts beforehand) this reality story will not be correctly experienced.

Note: this is a pretty awful documentary but it attempts to be real and poignant so it is actually very similar to your horror story found footage movies that prompted your requests. A good recommendation by user-friendly.

Guy has kid with crazy lady, guy is killed by crazy lady, crazy lady takes kid and kills herself and kid, grandpa gets all angry about it and manly cries about it on Digital Video tape.

I can't recommend Resurrect Dead enough, it's one of the best documentaries I've seen. Another good one is Horatio's Drive, which is a Ken Burns Documentary about the first road trip across the US. Tom Hanks narrates letters that were sent by the driver, and the whole thing almost seems like a comedy.

I would also recommend General Orders No. 9, although that's less of a documentary and more of an Americanized version of the Qatsi films, in my opinion.

Trinity and beyond is great. I will have to check all these other ones out, nice list!

Resurrect Dead is fantastic. I live in Philadelphia and had seen these things for YEARS without thinking twice about them.

I remember when I first moved here and came across a Toynbee tile. I stopped my friend and we looked at it for a second and figured it was a creative way to advertise some kind of show, then never thought about it again.

I still come across them, but the ones I see are all old and faded now. The guy's probably dead, or at least not placing tiles anymore.

Have you seen Rock-afire-explosion? The movie is about people that obsess over the old Showbiz Pizza robot band. To the point of building the entire stage in their homes.

I saw The Innkeepers last night. Decent throwback startle-scare based ghost movie. Weird thing for me to focus on, but the actors all did a great job of seeming like real people without resorting to that mumblecore nonsense. Just like how I left the theater after Paranormal Activity (the original, sadly only 2 and 3 are on instant) raving about how that was the most realistic couple dynamic I've seen on film in a long time.

Not so much "documentary" telling a linear story, but I really enjoyed "Antics Roadshow" and "The Yes Men Save The World." Subversive "gently caress the man" type stuff, but I really enjoyed them just for the brass balls nature of what they pull off. Make Dow Chemical stock lose $2bn U.S. because of a prank? Awesome.

Word Wars (which was recommended up the page, but that made me realize that it's back on instant) was pretty fun, in part because most of the Scrabble geeks realize that they're huge Scrabble geeks in an insular world. The Monopoly documentary was also alright, but not as good. There were some Terry Jones documentaries up a year ago, but they may have been lost in the latest Netflix-BBC shuffle. Being Elmo was pretty good, but the last month or so might have changed that.

Queen of Versailles can be pretty amusing if you make Arrested Development jokes through the whole thing (or marathon a season of Arrested Development first). There's some recent History Channel stuff (I'm specifically thinking of Ancient Aliens) if you can sacrifice historical scholarship for fun. How Beer Saved the World was kinda stupid at times but was a pretty okay pop history documentary.

I'd be willing to bet Holy Rollers is good, but I haven't watched it myself yet.

I thought Craigslist Joe was pretty interesting. Its about a guy that travels from the west coast to the east coast and back. The catch is everything he does has to be from craigslist. He can only use craigslist to find rides and places to stay. He meets some interesting people and attends some weird events. I think he mentions that even his cameraman is someone he found on craigslist.

It's more boring than anything else, unless you find some Bible thumpers squirming to justify their blatant and progressive sinning because "we're taking money from those evil casinos and using it to spread the word of God! (and totally keeping a shitload of it on the side to live nice lives and not have to work real jobs)" really entertaining. I found it more insufferable than amusing personally.

If you haven't seen Resurrect Dead yet, that's good one. It's more of a fun/weird mystery than light-hearted but it's still really good. If you like trek stuff (you mentioned trekkies), you might like The Captains, where Shatner just goes around and talks with the other captains.

The part I couldn't figure out is if the cameraman is adhering to the same rules as Joe. Does Joe have to mooch food for two? "Hey, can I Craigslist $5 from you? Can my friend Craigslist $5 more?"

I think the whole premise would be way more interesting as a book. It's pretty easy to get strangers to help you out / avoid creepy weirdos when they know you have a cameraman following you around.

I watched Queen of Versailles last night and found it surprisingly good entertaining. I found it funny when they went from such extreme opulence to a slightly lower level of opulence, and acted like they were now some kind of common folk while eating $2,000 caviar.

It struck me during the movie that it was that same guy who threatened his workers that if they didn't vote for Romney, they may lose their jobs. I looked him up, and found never acted on that threat. I can't imagine being so wrapped up in work. There's a point where your personal/family life and business life are no longer separate, and he regaled in that realm.

Apparently he wound up giving all his employees 5% raises to help them deal with Obama's new taxes instead. I'm not really sure how to feel about that, especially since his company was clearly in trouble during the movie.
