Eutherian mammals? Bah I say! I really envy the stuff you've been able to shoot over there. I'd be thrilled just being some place not covered in 2 feet of snow right now, never mind a variety of wildlife you can't see here at all. I hope you're not done with the pictures from over there yet.

Yup, short-nose echidna, Tachyglossus aculeatus. I'm here for another 2 months, and next week I'm off for a 5-day tour of Tassie, hitting as many National Parks and wilderness areas as I can. I'm hoping to keep up the parade of weirdo Aussie critters as long as I can. Fantastic shot of that weasel, by the way. I've never seen one in its winter whites.

It's a great feeling. The dolphins were getting very excited, very close to the rocks, and I just tried to keep focus. I am very happy with how this one came out. There are some really fantastic pictures in here! I've never really made an effort of taking photos of animals, most of mine are incidental. Maybe I'll go to the zoo or something in the next couple days. So far my best pictures happen to be of stationary invertebrates. butterfly retouch by vnlk65n, on Flickr millipede recrop by vnlk65n, on Flickr For whatever reason, the EXIF data got wiped when I re-upped these two . Two moose in a snow-filled field with beautiful red bushes during golden hour and I can't get my camera out the car window because I have a monopod attached. If this ever happens to any of you take my advice and get out of the car rather than trying to shoot out the window anyway and getting a whole bunch of shots like this: This came out semi-decent at least

EDIT: Woops, this is the wildlife thread not the bird thread . I've been meaning to start posting in the actual image threads on this forum rather than just the gear threads all the time, so here's a Dragonfly I shot forever ago. I would have liked to get more of the body/wings, but I was focusing manually, which was much easier in the center since I have a split-prism on my D60. Therefor the head was in the center of the photo before cropping. That said, I'm proud of hitting the focus almost spot on (would have liked the focus to be just a touch closer, though, the pupil looks a bit blurry). Speaking (very loosely) about digging, I see echidnas almost every time I go out; they are powerful diggers and are remarkably un-aware of their surroundings. I can get literally right on top of them. SD 114 Bruny Part 6 Labillardiere Peninsula 56 by Execudork, on Flickr SD 114 Bruny Part 6 Labillardiere Peninsula 55 by Execudork, on Flickr Despite the resemblance to North American porcupines, echidnas are not built to climb trees. Finding this one looking confused and lost on a log was pretty funny to watch. Those big claws stick out sideways, which is good for pushing soil, not so good for gripping wood. Common Demon Possum? Anyone around the San Francisco area in winter should go see the Aņo Nuevo elephant seals. There are escorted tours out to their harem beach, with great views of the males fighting, adorable pups, and general seal absurdity. It's like Pier 39 with a much bigger and endangered species. Zlatan Imhobitch posted:What is he doing in a tree?! There are two populations of tree-climbing lions in the world. The theory is that they want to escape insects by climbing up to a stronger breeze. I hope to see a pride of them in Uganda this summer. If my picture turns out half as nice as this one I'll be happy, it is amazing.

Well, this one was in a zoo, but your point still stands about certain populations of lions doing it in the wild.
