I have decided to buy the Maschine MK2 so that I may crazy fresh early 90's sounding east coast beatz.

Is there any benefit to using an actual MIDI port on the computer? I ask because my laptop has plenty of USB, but no MIDI ports. That is not an issue though because I have one of those ExpressCard slot things that I can get a MIDI version of. I also have Firewire on this laptop which I've heard some people like for samplers though I doubt the Maschine has any way to hook up that way.

if you are using a SoundBlaster32 in ModPlugTracker iiin DOS and you live in 1998 you should totally use MIDI inputs over USB ASIO 2.0

Yay; ~my wife~ got me a Maschine MK2 for my birthday :neckbeard:

She got a good deal on it too; $480 brand new! Warranty, in box, sealed, etc.

Making a small little corner of my home a "studio" which honestly just consists of a bunch of stuff I have had laying around for a decade in an effort to make it look cool and professional but it's not professional at all. DAT machine, TEAC Cassette Deck, Pioneer record player, EQ with cool looking lights, a computer monitor hooked into my laptop, and now the Maschine MK2. Next stop: the moon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's intriguing how people have responded to their success up here in the PNW. Initially, people were all hype that a local independent artist made such a huge impact. Now, I'm hearing people hating rather hard on their success for reasons such as "thrift shop was a dope track, but his music isn't usually" or "they're is more to PNW hip hop than macklemore". It's as if once their successful outside of their area, they are treated as betrayers of the craft. I've seen it in the south as well where a local artist, once they start making waves, is shunned by their fan-base for "not keeping it real anymore". This paradigm of artists and how their music is judged based on how successful it is doesn't make sense to me. If I like a track/artist, I do so even if no one else has heard of them or if everybody has heard of them.

TL;DR Hipster Hop

Not to make this a rap thread, but I'm still surprised that he didn't have Illmaculate or Sape featured on his album, and not even xp.

To get back on the production side of things, I think Ryan Lewis is awesome, first heard about him on his album with Symmetry, and although I don't really like the album, he's a crazy good producer.

Now that it think about it, that might've been the point. idk

I love to hear goons doin' poo poo together. Production is good, I like the lyrics and poo poo. Sounds kinda like you're holding back a little bit but I temper that with the fact that I'm pretty sure it's also a stylistic choice? You need to be louder in the mix, too, and you need more reverb and EQ and vocal production period. Other than that stuff, imo, good work and keep it up.

After lurking this thread and various other internets for a while, I am trying to get into production. I have been rapping for a while now, but I really want to get into making my own stuff. With that being said, where do I start? I don't know very much about music theory so would that be a good place to begin? It's been difficult finding good guides about learning what basic equipment and software to look into, so I'm kind of at a loss.

edit: vvv Thanks that's a lot of useful info

The most basic thing you're gonna need is a DAW, and you're gonna need to find one that's fit for you. If you're planning on making sample heavy music, I'd recommend Ableton Live as its sampler is one of the most versatile and easy to use. If you're not really into working with loops there's always Fruity Loops, Nuendo, Pro Tools, Sonar, whatevs. The first thing you'll wanna do is look up youtube tutorials for the software of your choice and learn to use it and use it well as it's gonna be your primary tool. If you're on a real tight budget at the moment, Reason has an elaborate demo and is one of the easiest DAW for simply sitting down and starting to produce music right away.

Then you're gonna want a midi controller because working with only a mouse and your keyboard's gonna sound hella mechanic if you don't know what you're doing. If you don't know much about music, perhaps it's better not to go with a keyboard and go with a midi interface like the NI Maschine, or an Akai or a Novation pad. They're all very intuitive to use and your music's gonna sound that much more natural.

After that, if you take your music seriously, you're gonna need monitors, as mixing music with headphones or computer speaker is poo poo. Investing in a good pair of powered monitors is gonna help make your sound that much better.
