Tyrannosaurs in P-51 Volkswagens!

Robert Frost and JFK. Frost was the first inauguration poet.

quote:

The Gift Outright

The land was ours before we were the land's.
She was our land more than a hundred years
Before we were her people. She was ours
In Massachusetts, in Virginia,
But we were England's, still colonials,
Possessing what we still were unpossessed by,
Possessed by what we now no more possessed.
Something we were withholding made us weak
Until we found out that it was ourselves
We were withholding from our land of living,
And forthwith found salvation in surrender.
Such as we were we gave ourselves outright
(The deed of gift was many deeds of war)
To the land vaguely realizing westward,
But still unstoried, artless, unenhanced,
Such as she was, such as she would become.

Maya Angelou for Clinton

quote:

On the Pulse of Morning

A Rock, A River, A Tree
Hosts to species long since departed,
Marked the mastodon.

The dinosaur, who left dry tokens
Of their sojourn here
On our planet floor,
Any broad alarm of their hastening doom
Is lost in the gloom of dust and ages.

But today, the Rock cries out to us, clearly, forcefully,
Come, you may stand upon my
Back and face your distant destiny,
But seek no haven in my shadow.

I will give you no more hiding place down here.
(cont'd)

Elizabeth Alexander for Obama's first inauguration

quote:

Praise Song for the Day

Each day we go about our business,
walking past each other, catching each other’s
eyes or not, about to speak or speaking.

All about us is noise. All about us is
noise and bramble, thorn and din, each
one of our ancestors on our tongues.

A pretty solid setup, possibly because you get what you pay for. This article about the facility suggests that the cost to the state comes to $500 per inmate per night. It doesn't say quite how they calculated that figure.

By contrast, Pew suggests that the cost per inmate per year in the US averages $31,286, which comes to about $85 per inmate per night. The Norwegian system in America would cost... $228,842,964,706 per year to the taxpayer.

The Presidio Modelo in Cuba was built under Machado in the 1920s and housed Fidel and Raul Castro in the early 50s. It's built according to the Panopticon theory of prison design, where all prisoners can be constantly watched by guards in the central tower.

50 years and 1 day ago, the Elysée treaty between Germany and France ended (at least) nine decades of outright hostility between the two. These are the seating arrangements for the following dinner.

And the menu:

Adenauer and de Gaulle hugging, quite out of protocol :3:

Yesterday, Merkel and Hollande met 200 youths from both countries and discussed the current state of the German-French relationship with them. Today, more than 500 French government officials and members of parliament will celebrate together with the German Bundestag and government in Berlin.

Got to spend money if you don't want to cultivate ~70% recidivism rates.

There was a similarly set-up chart showing how much in campaign donations each of a bill's sponsors had received posted somewhere in D&D a few months ago. Anyone have that?

Return dignity to the art of loafing.
While I definitely agree that grainy webcam dad is wrong about feminism and wrong about having a disability making assaulting a womans breasts somehow blameless- a particular underlying problem is that sex offender registries are not a product of feminism at all. They are a product of kneejerk 'penal populism. And those registries also have all sorts of problems such as including people like weird autistic boob toucher in the same categories as violent rapists. And then that violent rapist thing also largely plays into rape myths because most all rapes are by people women know etc. etc. it goes on.

Anywho,

A friend of mine in New Zealand moved into a flat only to find a steady large stream of weird looking mail arrive for what we can only guess was a former resident. After the pile got huge she tried to find the person to no avail and eventually got curious and opened a piece of mail. What she ended up finding opening the mail was a vast collection of different letter scams trying all sorts of aesthetics but all completely brazen. Fake bonds, lottery winnings, official-ish looking documents etc., some colourful and some drab.

Behold the now famed Scam-Wall flat:

Before my last deployment, I had to go to NATO training in Stavanger, and I had to stay in the conscript barracks at the local post. The layout of the rooms was exactly the same as these. They're obviously modular pre-fabricated buildings. Although, those pictures only show one bed. I had to share that tiny space with a roommate.

For reference, it's the tree with leaves on the left of the picture. One could imagine a) how people were like "oh shut the gently caress up" and b) if he fell how it would be A Thing

We live in an era of instant information verification, but people are totally content to let misrepresentations slide if they agree with the sentiment.

The folkish State has to make up for what is today neglected in this field in all directions. It has to put the race into the center of life in general. It has to care for its preservation in purity. It has to make the child the most precious possession of a people. It has to take care that only the healthy beget children; that there is only one disgrace: to be sick and to bring children into the world despite one's own deficiencies; but one highest honor: to renounce this. Further, on the other hand this has to be looked upon as objectionable: to keep healthy children from the nation. Thereby the State has to appear as the guardian of a thousand years' future, in the face of which the wish and the egoism of the individual appears as nothing and has to submit.
