How many supergroups is Scott Kelly going to be a part of? Isn't he also in Shrinebuilder (which is infinitely more awesome than that video)? edit-- drat, now that I think about it, there's really no supergroup that could possibly be better than Scott Kelly, Al Cisneros, Dale Crover, and Wino.

Om is the best supergroup (even if it's actually a subgroup).  And that single would be much better without the stupid video and boring vocals and with the addition of a few decent riffs.

On the Scott Kelly topic, Saw Neurosis last night for the first time - pretty awesome show! It was also loud as gently caress, I would've been deaf had I not had my earplugs. Was most surprised by the opening bands. I expected drone or sludge or post or something, but instead it was crazy electronic stuff. The first guy to play, Carlos Giffoni, was one dude with a couple of synths and a mixer and did some neat evolving noise stuff. Not what I was expecting, but excellent anyways. James Plotkin & Tim Wyskida were next, I missed most of it but it was drums+synth+processed noise guitar.

So I saw Amenra and Cult of Luna the other night. What at amazing gig. I'm pretty sure Amenra channel something in their music that elevates them above other bands of that sort of style. It's so cathartic and heavy, I did so much screaming that my eyes were streaming by the end of their set. I can't really explain it but their live shows make me feel things that other bands don't. Their records are good, I enjoy Mass II, III, IIII and V, but live they are something else entirely. I've heard criticisms that they sound too close to Neurosis/just play the same chord, but they seem to have more of a hardcore or even a screamo influence than Neurosis do. As for them playing the same chord, I kind of see this criticism with Mass IIII, but when they're playing live it doesn't matter, because they use the repetition to create the most amazing, ritualistic atmosphere. If they're playing the same chord over and over again, it's clearly working for them, and I never want to hear a different chord again! Cult of Luna were also great, I only knew 3 of the songs though as they played most of Vertikal, but the stuff they did play sounded so good that I bought the album immediately afterwards. I really think they've used the electronic elements to enhance their sound effectively on this album, and Vicarious Redemption is already one of my favourite CoL songs. The album seems very well composed, and I'd highly recommend it to anyone who is a fan of the band, or anyone into the "post-metal" (eurgh) sound. I was amazed by what a good job the sound guy did considering how dense their sound is and how many members they had on stage, the sound was flawless. The crowd were good natured as well, there wasn't really any moshing, but there was a lot of headbanging, my neck still kind of hurts today! If I hadn't seen a Neurosis/Godflesh coheadline show last month, I'd probably say that's the best gig I've been to in ages.

The emotional weight of their songs is immense, but I find their music kind of relaxing, as opposed to something like Sleep or the Through Silver In Blood era Neurosis stuff, which I consider to be "woah so heavy" kinda thing. Funeral doom rules though and Stormcrowfleet is an incredible album.

"Dopesmoker" is still the slowest album. Sleep are really good at subdividing their riffs and filling the spaces with interesting patterns, so it sometimes sounds like they're playing fast, but the overall tempo of the album is ridiculously low. The intro riff, for instance, takes over a minute to completely cycle through.

Dopesmoker and that Khanate track I posted are both around 50bpm, which is about larghetto or a slow adagio. Though at that tempo when the riff in Dopesmoker switches from 4/4 to 3/4 it sneaks up on you, which is really neat. I remember seeing the Melvins do Hung Bunny/Roman Bird Dog at like half the speed as the recorded version back in like 2002 or 2003. That was something else.

The really tricky part is that the first thing you hear Matt playing in the intro is actually the last 6/4 "bar" of the Departure riff.

Wait, the've played Hung Bunny slower than the album? TWICE as slow?? Need proof. actually I may have heard it since 2002 Melvin's was one of my first real concerts. I'm sure I had no IDEA what was going on. HehePS you know those stupid digital juke boxes? The ones that'll play tons of CDs that have been on a major label, no matter how obscure? Pay the two bucks for a single play of "Hag Me" in a sports bar.. Trust me... It'll be worth your two bucks.

Please recommend me more hate filled, crusty doom, kind of like this. I stumbled across these guys when Grim Kim wrote about the vinyl release for Metalsucks, and now I am desperate for more doom that sounds like this. I have Eyehategod records, but that is the closest thing I could think of in my library. The only other doom band I have that I would consider fast enough to be "violent" would be High on Fire.

Oh no, the time signature shifts were absolutely intentional, and meticulously planned. If you listen to the fast proto-Dopesmoker from the '94 Hawkwind tour, you can hear how some of the parts were originally just straight 4/4. The weirdness didn't set in until they started to slow the tempo way down. The March 2006 issue of Decibel has the most comprehensive story of Dopesmoker by far. I thoroughly recommend it to all interested parties.

Oh yeah they definitely intentionally switched from 4/3/6/etc counts. There's no way to play that slow that consistently without subdividing so they definitely at least understand how meter works. e: watch Matt Pike's head and his foot.
