All you need to do is "just boot tethered" on any pc/Mac with redsn0w.

As I understand it, correct me if I'm wrong someone, if your device powers down at all, you need to connect your device to a computer with the jailbreaking tool on it in order to power it up. You can recharge it on whatever, just don't let it power down.

I thought it just wouldn't be jailbroken if not tethered at bootup. Not that it wouldn't boot at all.

I didn't even think of this - I don't know either, I've never had a tethered JB myself. I'll edit my answer, thanks.

FWIW I got a 3GS when it was fairly new and only had a tethered jailbreak, and used it for 3 years straight. You reboot an IOS device so rarely that only having a tethered jailbreak is not that big a hassle. YMMV.

With the one I had, the device would only boot into DFU mode. You then had to connect it to a computer, any computer, with blackra1n to finish booting.

6.01 is current for all but iPhone 5 and iPad mini, which are 6.02 for wifi fixes( even though wifi on my 4s has been poo poo since 6.0 came out)

I'm selling my iPad 3 running 5.1.1 (but not jailbroken) on Craigslist, and a buyer is asking me blob questions. I never bothered to save the blobs for 5.1.1 and I'm not sure if I upgraded it to 5.1.1 or if it came from the factory with it already installed (bought it in April, I think).

So to close the sale with this guy, I installed iFaith and Redsn0w. iFaith gave an error about the feature not being available and Redsn0w did the same. In Windows, Redsn0w went all the way through DFU mode prompts and then said something like "this isn't available on the iPad 3" and in OS X it just has the "Fetch" button greyed out.

Now, as I understand it, this iPad can totally still be jailbreaked, right? But, if it came from the factory with 5.1.1 installed, there is no way of getting the 5.1.1 and/or 5.0.1 or whatever blobs?

I meant to use Tiny Umbrella before Apple stopped signing 5.1.1 but DFU mode was always such a nightmare with my Apple TV, I just never wanted to spend the hour cursing and stabbing at buttons. Plus I always thought iFaith could just rip the blobs off 5.1.1 anyway so what's the point. Guess I was wrong?

If its a semi-tethered jb then it will boot just not tethered and safari probably wont work.

If its just a tethered JB then it just won't boot.

It can still be jailbroken. I've seen some people complaining that OTA updates are not compatible with the jailbreaks though so I don't know if that will affect you. You are SOL on getting the blobs.

OTA updates aren't compatible with same-major-version firmware restoration (like 5.0.1 to 5.1.1 for example), the jailbreak should work fine.

I haven't run it, but I probably will in a VM later this weekend unless I hear it's definitely fake. Not sure what anyone stands to gain by releasing a fake JB on a free download site with no ads or surveys or whatever, unless of course it's a virus/trojan.

v:shobon:v lots of people must be faking cydia screenshots to support whatever this is; here's another:

pod2g seems rather pumped for Apple to get 6.1 out the door..

Jailbreakmatrix says 6.1 beta 4 has been jailbroken, there's a new group called the Evad3rs..

Jailbreakmatrix.com posted:

The Evad3rs are the actual group responsible for the upcoming iOS 6 jailbreak that will support devices such as the iPad mini and the iPhone 5.

The group consists of 4 known twitter developers/researchers; @planetbeing, @pimskeks, @musclenerd and @pod2g.

These developers have been working around the clock to get everything ready release, when Apple drops iOS 6.1 to the public.

When was the last time a jailbreak was released that looked so OBVIOUSLY fake as this? It looks crazy-fake and is filled with terrible spelling. Nothing comes out like that.

Jailbreak info hits Twitter (and maybe IRC) first, and is talked about by known security-experts. Not from obviously-fake sites. I've only been following the jailbreak "scene" for a bit under 3 years, but it's been pretty darn easy to spot a fake.

Wario In Real Life posted:

Have any info on this? I do have a developer account and have my devices filled with open-source software already.

From what I've read, it can be installed (but not fully work), but I haven't seen any way how.

Anything that runs on a pre-A5 device will always be "jailbroken". The limera1n exploit is used to load things before the OS loads, allowing anything to be injected into it. If iOS 7 runs on a pre-A5 device, it's as good as jailbroken.

I use my phone more than my laptop or desktop computers and not being able to arrange everything the way I want makes it take almost twice as long to get anything done. That and the default icon layout is loving gross and makes having any kind of pleasant looking wallpaper worthless, and having to make three folders for work apps for me or the four folders of games for my daughter is retarded. Honestly the things I miss most are folder enhancer, infinidock and gridlock. Well, those and PDAnet for long train rides.

So now that I have something that I care about both having jailbroken and not losing all the data on it, are there any special steps I should take with a jailbroken iPhone 4 to get it on 6.1, jailbroken, without losing all of my contacts and crap? Is it enough to just do a backup through iTunes, factory reset, and then restore from backup before jailbreaking again?
