if you're gonna properly learn ruby at all there is just about one good book that is strictly on the language, called (surprise) the ruby programming language. it's very k&r in its style and just cuts out the bullshit

i've been getting paid to write ruby (mostly outside rails) for about 3 years, and i like it. all of the reasons i like it (e.g. blocks, good core libs for strings/arrays/etc, the inheritance model) boil down to "less boilerplate and redundancy". basically i hate writing repetitve code more than i hate running slow code

also I was going to do this but honestly just getting it online was such a hassle, I didn't want to fix it up.
