This is a silly argument. All you have to do is stick them in a lovely school district with a low graduation rate, and that colleges don't respect for 18 years. Hundreds of years of generational oppression is no match for a hopeless future when it comes to education.

One hundred and fifty years ago today, the Bear River Massacre took place in Idaho. This simple monument marks the site. The Shoshone tribe had been in slowly escalating conflict with settlers in the area, nothing unusual for the time. President Lincoln, distrustful of the Mormons in Utah and concerned about California being cut off from the rest of the country, had this man, Colonel Patrick Connor, establish a US military presence in Utah.  After some miners showed up in Salt Lake City describing being attacked by the Shoshone, Connor decided to send an expedition north to 'deal with' the tribe. The expedition and the Shoshone met in battle on this date in 1863, in bitterly cold weather. The battle was initially somewhat even as the US force had gotten their artillery stuck a few miles back, and the Shoshone had their own guns to defend themselves. The first frontal assault ordered by Connor ended somewhat poorly for them. He then flanked the Shoshone and the tribe ran out of ammunition and switched to tomahawks and bows and arrows. The battle quickly turned into a senseless massacre. Women were raped, infants beaten to death, homes burned, and winter supplies destroyed or stolen. Estimates of dead range from 150 to 500. The tribe was never a real force in the area again. Some of the survivors ended up joining with the Mormons, while the rest ended up on the Fort Hall reservation. Connor was promoted to general for his efforts.

My genetics professor put that up on the board the final day of class. Everyone just leaned waaay back and were rather surprised/disgusted. He turned to everyone and said something to the effect of "And now, despite what I said all semester about how genetics affects everything about life, it's not the only thing that does. People have used this chart to 'prove' that black people are genetically inferior. What they fail to recognize is that genetics is not the only factor in life, and that social and economic circumstances play a huge part in the development of people." Siv Jensen, leader of the Progress Party (FRP) in Norway. A thatcherite, a xenophobe, and a climate change denier. She and her ilk are on a personal crusade to make Norway more like the US. She's the head of what I like to think of as the Norwegian Tea Party. The scariest thing right now is that FRP has the most amounts of seats in parliament right after Labour (AP). She will be running for prime minister.

Parties like these are experts when it comes to play right into people's disdain for any current government, as well as the ever-growing islamophobia and xenophobia. When you appeal to the lowest common denominator and people's emotions, you're bound to gain a whole lot of angry followers. I gotta say, though, it's simply amazing how the American Tea Party movement managed to build such a hatred towards poor and unemployed people. We do have a bunch of rhetoric akin to the "welfare queen" concept here in Norway, but it's mostly used as a not too subtle euphemism for "Them there foreigners coming over to mooch on our social services". This is Anders Lange, the founder of the aforementioned Progress party. There's a lot of controversy surrounding him supporting Apartheid, and even recieving funds from the former Rhodesian regime.

Thank you for that appropriatemetaphor, exactly what I wanted. Christian Tybring-Gjedde. One of the worst in the Progress Party right now. Thinks that Islam is threatening to rip Norway apart, has said that Pakistani youth are biologically inclined to violence, Israel BFF, the works. I've talked to him a couple of times because he shopped at a grocery store I worked at (and I tended to talk to all of my customers), and he's a very friendly guy, but he's completely misguided, irresponsibly stupid and generally disgusting when it comes to politics. The past few years I've had in-depth conversations with all sorts of people; conservative/fundamentalist religious people, misanthropic edgy internet atheists, far-right wingers, unhealthily obsessed otakus, smelly disturbing furries, filthy rich one percenters, "green" anti nuclear and GMO activists and more (including many more people with positive stereotypes instead of negative ones, thankfully). The plain truth is that once you talk to people like people, you learn that most of them are compassionate, friendly and trustworthy, and that includes rear end in a top hat right-wing politicians, but it's hard to not just dismiss them as worthless lost causes when they spew so much poo poo. My personal political philosophy is 'Middle'  At least they acknowledge that actual anarchists and anarcho-capitalists are on opposite sides of the spectrum. Also, communists/fascists I can wrap my head around someone hating communism, but how the gently caress can you pretend to know anything about politics and lump communism and fascism in together

This magazine was on sale for about a week before it got pulled from the shelves. The headline reads "A surprising result: 18% of Bretons for independance". The publisher initially said it was because of a printing error but it's since come out that the CEO of Ouest France, the newspaper company that owns Bretons magazine, wants no talk of separatism and so the issue will be reprinted with a headline talking about other things from the recent polls, particularly how Bretons don't know the history of Brittany.
