Unrelated, what do people think of "Melancholia"?

For what it's worth, I typically hate movies as exceedingly slow-paced as Melancholia, as well as hating movies about depressed people being depressing, and I was absolutely mesmerized by the film. So I'd say give it a shot, because I was certainly very pleasantly surprised.

Netflix doesn't cut anything but they're beholden to the cuts the studios deign to give them. In my experience that's tended to mean extended episodes or alternate cuts but sometimes you end up with some weird chopped-up version v:)v

Also there's a lot of philistines running around here. Melancholia is great.

Go ahead and buy Wagner's Tristan and Isolde now, since after watching Meloncholia you'll want to play it loud and scare your neighbors.

I wish Southland was on instant, dammit. I got through season 1 on disc but wish I could binge through some during my train commute.

Is anyone else into Spiral? The only way I can think to describe it is the French Wire, just without the scope. The female protagonist smacks of McNulty, and the French Prosecutor is an awesome character. The very first scene is a gruesome postmortem autopsy, so it's occasionally not for the squeamish.

FYI Bad Lieutenant is the R-rated version (or was when I saw it). It's still a good movie but you'll notice a number of scenes ending before they should, as well as a distinct lack of penis.

Watched Apartment 147 last night, wasn't too bad. About a haunted apartment investigated by "scientists". The acting wasn't anything to write home about, but the effects were pretty decent. Only one jump scare at the end of the movie. A lot better than Red Lights, which was completely, completely bad and boring.

Red Lights starts off fairly intriguing and then just completely falls apart. I felt bad for the kid from Submarine who is in like 4 scenes.

I actually think the opposite, the acting was pretty compelling but the paranormal/supernatural stuff was just "whatever." I like the idea of there being the haunting but it just feels gratuitous to show anything.

I think the only person I didn't like acting wise, and threw a whole kink in the movie for me, was the lead scientist. Seemed like he was just reading stuff off paper.

I kinda agree, it threw me a little first but you don't really need it to be the Frost/Nixon interview. I liked how dark and peculiar the dad's story was and actually felt a little resentful that the movie had to give you a BOO! at the end to make you feel like you didn't waste your time.

Yeah, the father's story was really great. And I agree the jump scare at the end was pretty stupid.

Antichrist had the full-monty penetration scene. And plenty of foreign films retain their explicit sex scenes. It's clearly not a Netflix policy, it just comes down to whatever cut the studio negotiated them to have.

Willem Dafoe is into weird art stuff, apparently. I saw an experimental film where he lay on the ground while people poked his junk with a stick.

With a description like that I unfortunately can't remember the name!

Pretty much. Netflix had 9 Songs on there for a loooong time and it's basically hardcore porn with music between each scene. Netflix just gets crappy versions of stuff sometimes. I couldn't watch more than a few minutes of Amazing Stories because it looked beyond horrible and was super choppy. I'm watching Miami Vice right now and there have been a couple of episodes with similar choppiness or weird audio tracks.

I think it's ending soon, so if you haven't seen Still Bill, I'd suggest taking a look at it. Very interesting, simple documentary about Bill Withers (if you don't know the name, I'll bet you've heard at least 3 or 4 of his songs before). It's pretty short and leaves you feeling good at the end.

There's a few episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation that have the "wobbly video-tape" audio; like it's been run through the VCR too many times. It's kind of amazing.

I can't even remember what the film was because it was some obscure 80s thriller I never heard of before and I stopped watching it when it turned out to be pan-and-scan, but I recall it opening with a screen of text that made it clear that Netflix was just given the copy meant for on-demand rentals in hotel rooms.

I see what you did there...
Netflix launched their remake of House of Cards today, and it shows a lot of promise. The production values are great, there are a lot of well-known actors (including, obviously, Kevin Spacey as Francis Underwood), and the tone seems spot on. So far my only complaint is minor. Francis Underwood hails from the South, and Spacey does not. His fake accent is pretty decent, but it is a little telling at times.

Other than that, pretty good so far.

Watched "Naked Gun" for the first time in what must be 15 years if not more. Boy that movie hasn't held up. It has good moments but I think it fell for the same trap so many comedies fall into and dates itself with topical jokes. Man, used to love this movie as a kid.

It's been a few years since I saw it, but I don't remember much topical other than the (admittedly kind of terrible) opening scene.
